    Origin and Meaning
    The direct translation ''son of Jean'' - the Norman French version of John. As such the name is equivalent to Johnson. The MacShanes of Ulster and Louth are a branch of the O''Neills. The family Shane in Westmeath is a branch of the O''Farrells while in Kerry the surname MacShane was assumed by the Fitzmaurices.
    Development and History
    A study of th 1890 census of Ireland shows a total of 34 births to the name McShane that year. 25 of the births were registered in Ulster and the remaining 9 in Leinster.
