    Origin and Meaning
The name has many distinct origins in Ireland, with at least a dozen different septs. O hAodha is a Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Aodh (fire). This was anglicised as O’Hea by a sept in Corca Laoidhe, Co. Cork. In most other septs, including those of Wexford, Tyrone, Donegal, Monaghan, Meath, Thomond, Galway, Mayo and Sligo, the name was anglicised as Hayes. In Ulster it has largely become Hughes.
    Development and History
The surname Hayes also has a separate norman origin, being derived from the name ‘de la Haye’ but very few Hayes today are descendants of the line.
