    According to MacLysaght, “Fitzmaurices are a famous branch of the Norman Geraldines, lords of Lixnaw in Kerry, notable for their resistance to English invaders in the sixteenth century. The name Fitzmaurice is also connected with Mayo because some Connacht Prendergasts adopted it.”
