George Herman House (GHH) is a transitional housing and life skills program that supports women who are living with mental health issues. It was established in 1972 by Nina Herman in memory of her husband, and was designed to address the needs of women with mental illnesses. She desired to create an empowering program that would enable them to make a successful transition into independent living.

George Herman House has a unique, holistic healing & wellness philosophy that is reflected in its promotion of healthy eating, overall nutritional awareness and complementary health care practices which are known to play a pivotal role in emotional, physical and mental health. GHH's strength-based perspective in relation to the residents encourages and mentors them in developing the life skills necessary to live healthily. The staff endeavour to provide an atmosphere of safety and learning for the women while they participate in the program. GHH also works to reduce existing isolation through helping the residents rebuild their personal an community networks.

  • George Herman House has a Staff team available for support Monday through Friday during business hours.
  • We provide safe and supportive transitional housing.
  • Our program is designed to prepare its residents to live a more independent life within the broader community.
  • This environment gives women the opportunity to learn the essential life skills necessary to live successfully.
  • We feel that the services and support women receive in this transitional time is critical. Areas of personal growth, self-acceptance, life skills and integration, are all aims of the G.H.H. program.
  • Our agency is a field placement for Ryerson University Social Work students, as well as George Brown College students in related areas of study.
