Official emblem unveiled
The official emblem of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008 was unveiled today during a ceremony held in Santiago de Chile. Brazil's star Marta Vieira da Silva, top goalscorer and voted best player of the FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007, was present at the event.
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter was unable to attend but sent the following message: "The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup is the competition in which one can see young talent showing their skills and blossoming into international stars. Over one third of the players who were in China 2007 had previously played at one of the three previous FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups, including Marta, who was the best player in Thailand 2004. I have no doubt that the fans will witness very high standards, and that these players will prove what I have often said before: the future of football is feminine. For the Game. For the World. For Women."
The official emblem shows a kite in the colours of the Chilean flag, including light blue, symbolising the fact that it is a women's event. The dynamic airwave is an element which also imparts a feminine expression, as it pictures the wind carrying the kite and (when the emblem is held lengthways) depicts the unique shape of the country. The kite is one of the most popular symbols of Chilean culture, and it is a tradition for children to fly them during national holidays such as Independence Day.
The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will be held for the first time in South America when it arrives in Chile in 2008. There will be four host cities: Chillán, Coquimbo, La Florida (Santiago) and Temuco.
Whereas the qualifying competition has already been completed in two confederations (AFC and UEFA), it will be played during the first half of 2008 in the other zones. The places have been allocated as follows to confederations: AFC (3), CAF (2), CONCACAF (3), CONMEBOL (2), OFC (1), UEFA (4), plus the host country.
