Welcome to the EDP Business Guide 2007. It’s our third year of producing the guide which offers an in depth profile of the region’s economy. As in previous years we look in detail at the main sectors which define our economy. We have focused on key industries such as tourism and financial services, health and life sciences as well as engineering and electronics.
We highlight many of the key players in each area, some household names and some not so well known.

We examine the challenges the sectors face, from international competition, to changes in technology, and we examine how our companies are meeting those issues.
One of the hottest topics has been energy, with rising energy prices and awareness of climate change moving the issue up the business agenda.
With energy such a key sector in the region, we hosted a debate for some of the leading figures in the industry to share their concerns and wishes for the future.
At the heart of the guide once more is the Top 75 – the definitive league table of the region’s biggest companies.
The Top 75, which is compiled with the considerable assistance of accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers and Mills & Reeve, ranks the 75 largest firms in our area by turnover and details the number of staff they employ.
As well as locally based companies it also includes the subsidiaries of larger companies with significant businesses in our area where possible.
This, we believe, gives the most accurate picture of the largest companies in the region and the crucial role they play in the region’s economy.
