Lyrics
I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, mmm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

I used to love her, ooh, yeah
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, ooh, yeah
But I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard
Oh yeah, ooh yeah, whoa, oh yeah
I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
She bitched so much, she drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way, yeah
Whoa, oh yeah

I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, mmm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her, ooh, six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

In Their Own Words
Izzy: 'I Used To Love Her (But I Had To Kill Her)' is a joke. I was sitting around listening to the radio and some guy was whining about a broad who was treating him bad. I wanted to take the radio and smash it against the wall. Such self-pity! What a wimp! So we rewrote the same song we heard with a better ending, it's a real New York type song.

Slash
: It's pretty self-explanatory.

Duff: It's very tongue-in-cheek, you know. It's not to be taken seriously, you know. It's a joke. I don't condone wife beating. I understand it, but I don't condone it, you know. So, it's very tongue-in-cheek. You'll hear it when it comes out.

Slash
: 'Used To Love Her' is one we've played in concert a lot, and we got a lot of heat about it because the lyric goes, 'I used to love her, but I had to kill her.' People think it's about one of our old girlfriends, but it's actually about Axl's dog. It's really a joke, nothing more.

Duff: If somebody can be so... disturbed by it, that just means they don't have a sense of humour, and that's their problem. The core of our fans will understand it. Y'know, we've played it live many times, and y'know.

Izzy: [The song is] a joke. Wife beating's been around for 10 million years or something, I mean, I don't advocate it. I understand it. But I don't treat women any differently than I treat men.

Slash
: If some guy goes out and kills his girlfriend, that's gonna fuck my head up. I mean, this is serious. It's affecting the lives of people you don't even know, which is definitely a scary thing, to have that much power.
