Alternatives to Traditional Transportation Fuels 2005 (Part II - User and Fuel Data)

Data for: 2005
Report Release: November 2007
Next Release Date: November 2008

This report (Part II) contains data on the use of alternative fueled vehicles (AFVs) and the amount of fuel they consume. AFVs are on-road U.S. vehicles that operate on fuels other than motor gasoline or diesel. Information on the supply of AFVs is contained in Part I.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) collects data on the following items:

   1. The number of AFVs supplied each year; i.e., new AFVs and conventionally fueled vehicles converted to operate on an alternate fuel;
   2.  For a limited set of fleet user groups, the number of AFVs in use and the amount of alternate transportation fuel consumed.  The user groups surveyed are: Federal and State governments, alternate fuel providers, and transit companies.

EIA combines these two sets of data and other external information to develop an estimate of AFVs for the remaining users, municipal governments and private fleets.  The result is a set of AFV  supply and use data that represents all AFVs in the United States.

Three sets of AFV data tables are available:

          AFVs Supplied (Part I)
          AFVs in Use (this report)
          Consumption of alternate transportation fuels (this report)

Beginnning with 2003 data, the methodology used to develop the estimates of AFVs in use and alternate transportation fuel consumption were changed.  The data tables reflect this new methodology.  A description of the revised methodology may be found at
