Flair and Foley put on great show

In a match that stole the show at "SummerSlam," Ric Flair defeated Mick Foley in a hardcore classic. There have been better hardcore matches in the past and there will be better ones in the months to come, but none will be done as well as Flair/Foley II.

For all the hype surrounding the Hulk Hogan match and for all the lead-in for Degeneration X vs. the McMahons, Flair and Foley took about eight minutes of airtime over a three-week period to build incredible suspense for their "SummerSlam" encounter. For the first time in a long time on a WWE pay-per-view, the match was something you didn't feel like you could easily have seen on Monday or Friday night.

Younger wrestlers should get a tape of the last month of "Raw" and the "SummerSlam" match to learn how things are done the right way, and the WWE brass should finally wake up to the fact they so overpromote their PPV main events with tag matches and run-ins that there really is no novelty once the big night arrives. Flair, maybe the greatest of all time, has been at his absolute best over the last six months.

AROUND THE RING: Kurt Angle still wants to wrestle full-time despite a torn groin muscle. ... Some claim the WWE has contacted Road Dogg and Billy Gunn about returning to reform Degeneration X.
