Australian ambassador says Myanmar death toll much higher than official figure

SYDNEY (Thomson Financial) - Australia's ambassador in Yangon, Bob Davis, said Friday that the actual number of deaths from the military crackdown in Myanmar is much higher than the number given by the government.
Davis said the official death toll from the crackdown on mass protests against the government was 10.
But he told ABC radio that witnesses reported to embassy officials that they saw 'significantly more than that number of dead being removed from the scene of the demonstrations in central Yangon yesterday.'
The actual death toll is 'several multiples of the 10 acknowledged by the authorities,' he said.
Davis said the crackdown is a 'completely inappropriate response to peaceful demonstrations' and that he expects the demonstrations to continue Friday.
'It's very tense,' he said.
He said that while the government has said it is committed to showing restraint, 'what we saw yesterday is not restraint.'
