PLAZA OF HONOUR

Recognizing Our Past - The Plaza of Honor

The Plaza of Honor cairn outside of Mosaic Stadium.

This year's induction dinner was held on October 19th when ...

STEVE DENNIS         VIC STEVENSON       BOBBY THOMPSON

were inducted into the Plaza of Honor.

Standing outside the main gates on the west side of Mosaic Stadium is a 10-sided cairn supporting solid granite tablets that symbolize the rich tradition, strength and history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The cairn, which is formally known as the Plaza of Honor and is sponsored by SaskTel, carries the names of close to 100 individuals who have been the building blocks of this renowned franchise.

A combination of players, coaches and builders that have contributed excellence to the Roughrider franchise, both on and off the field, have their names carved on the tablets and have been forever enshrined in the Plaza of Honor, the Roughrider equivalent of a hall of fame.

The fact that the cairn stands outside Mosaic Stadium symbolizes the accessibility of the shrine to Rider fans at any time.

In the fall of each football season the list of honorees grows as more heroes of the past are feted at the Plaza of Honor Induction ceremonies.

History

Historically, the Club, by virtue of its small provincial population base, has had to look off-field to raise much needed operations revenue in order to compete with the other CFL member partners.

The Club’s Board of Directors, which has long been comprised of business people who have had a passion for football and ‘bled green’, conjured up a fundraising Roughrider Sportsman’s Dinner in 1953 charging the then large sum of $100 per plate – and very creatively called it the Roughrider $100-a-Plate Dinner. From 1953 to today, these volunteers have annually arm-twisted their peers for support, until it has become ingrained not only in the minds of Rider fans and businesses but, equally as important, in their annual budgets.

The fundraising format of having Rider players, coaches and management in attendance, often with a Roughrider-unrelated guest speaker, continued until 1987 with the unveiling of the Plaza of Honor and the inaugural Induction ceremonies, honoring nine Rider greats. After a few catch-up years of a similarly large slate of inductees, the annual honorees now generally number three, often representing different eras.

As one would expect, over time the cost of the fundraiser has increased to the $300 stipend of today. Since 1953 the previous dinner and current induction format has raised in excess of $6.0 million, and today contributes over $200,000 annually towards the operation of the Club.

Listed below are the names of the esteemed inductees, the years they played and the year each was inducted.
