OLYMPUS OM SLR
FEATURE OVERVIEW

by Klaus Schroiff

I've only very limited knowledge and information about the Olympus OM system so think of this page as a very rough overview. You hear little about the OM system but in fact it is more or less a living one - at least it is still supported by Olympus. However, new equipment announcements are very rare and there were no real innovations for more than a decade so the future doesn't seem to be very shiny. Nonetheless many Olympus Zuiko lenses have an almost legendary reputation and there's an amazingly number of active users out there. Please note that this is not intended as a complete overview but rather a little list of equipment that is interesting for a user's perspective (aka not collector).

AF sensors Number of focus zones. "(1#)" means: incl. one cross-type focus sensor that is able to focus on horizontal and vertical structures.
AF working range ( EV ) e.g EV -1 to 20. The camera will be able to meter acurately within this amount of light available.
Metering systems See dedicated site for details
M-working range ( EV ) Metering range. e.g. EV 0 to 20 The camera will be able to meter accurately within this amount of light available.
Exp. Compensation ( EV ) e.g. +-4/.3 - means that the camera can shoot 4 stops over, and up to 4 stops under-exposed from meter reading, in .3 stop increments
Shutter speed e.g. 1/4000-30s,B means: a fastest shutter speed of 1/4000s and a slowest shutter speed of 30s. Additionally you can expose as long as you want in bulb mode.
Auto-Bracketing Camera will automatically take some pictures (typically 3) with different exposure settings (e.g. one exposure at metered value, one at .5 stops over exposed, and one .5 stops underexposed)
Mirror lock-up Capability to lock mirror up a few seconds before shutter operates. Reduces vibrations caused by the shutter and can lead to sharper pictures.
max. X-Sync e.g 1/125 - indicates the shutter speeds that a flash will work properly up to 1/125 sec.
Hi-speed sync. e.g 1/4000s - indicates that a special flash mode supports shutter speeds up to 1/4000s with certain dedicated flash units. See FAQs for details.
Flash sync. on 2nd curtain Indicated whether a camera is able to trigger the flash at the end of an exposure. 1st curtain sync. is standard anyway.
Flash Exp. Comp.( EV ) e.g. +-3/.5 - means that the camera can shoot 3 stops over, and up to 3 stops under-exposed from meter reading, in .5 stop increments. 'w/xyz' means that it does when used in conjunction with this flash unit
Built-in Flash (GN) 1st number represent the Guide number (GN). e.g. 14 (28mm) means an illumination up to 14m distance with a focal-length coverage of 28mm based on ISO 100 film and f/1.0. For our friends in the USA and in Brunei: multiply the GN by ~3 and you get the GN in ft.
Viewfinder-info:
  • A = Aperture
  • T = Shutter speed (Time)
  • AF = AF ok
  • Ec = Exp.-Compensation
  • F = Flash ok
  • D = Diopter adjustment
  • Sh = Shake warning
Viewfinder size (%) e.g. 92% - the viewfinder covers 92% of the resulting image.
No. Viewfinders Number of interchangable viewfinders (optional).
No. Screens Number of interchangable focus screens (optional).
Programs
  • F = P&S program (=Fully automated)
  • P = Program-mode (Note: not always shiftable: -(P)-)
  • Sp = Shutter priority
  • Ap = Aperture priority
  • M = Manual
  • 4,5,8 = Number of specialized P&S programs like Landscape, Macro, Night, Close-up etc.pp.
Depth-of-field preview Ability of the camera to stop down the f-stop to give the possibility to check the depth-of-field.
Metal mount Metal or plastic mount. Does not indicate whether the metal mount is fixed on an internal metal structure.
Motorspeed e.g. 5fps (frames per second) - fastest number of shots per second a camera can take. Independent from AF predictive speed!
weight (g) Weight without lens & batteries. For our friends in the USA and in Brunei: devide the weight (g) by ca. 30 and you get the weight in oz.
