TOM PETTY DOING (HALF)TIME AT THE SUPER BOWL

Just don't expect any lyrics like 'Let's roll another joint', though

THE SKINNY: The names “Tom Petty” and “Super Bowl” don’t generally go together in people’s minds, though they will this year.

Tom Petty has been asked by the NFL to play the halftime show at the upcoming Super Bowl on February 7 in Glendale, AZ. He talked about the gig in a recent Rolling Stones interview, as well as the long overdue Heartbreakers album and why you won’t be hearing “You Don’t Know How It Feels” at the show.

Petty decided that, if Paul McCartney and Prince could do the halftime show, it would be “pretty cool” for him to do so. The NFL’s only request was a “strong hint” that “You Don’t Know How It Feels” wouldn’t be the best choice of song (because of that lyric about “roll[ing] another joint”, most likely). Other than that, Petty is still considering what he’ll play live at the show (no pre-recordings for this guy), and whether a well-placed “wardrobe malfunction” is a good idea. (Kidding, kidding – besides, would you want to see a Tom Petty wardrobe malfunction?)

Petty also announced that the next album he does “will be the long-overdue Heartbreakers record” but that he hasn’t changed his mind about doing no more tours. When asked why, he said, “just don’t want to commit that much time to it. I love doing it and I’m sure I’ll do more tours, but I’m not going to do big long ones. I have so much I want to do right now. If I’m going to do another Heartbreakers album, I need some time to write that and record that and do it the way I want to.”

And finally, Petty had a few words to say about the state of the recording industry: “What industry? I don’t really follow the industry too close, but I understand there’s less and less of it each time… It’s sad, but I’m not going to worry about it. What I think the problem is they just don’t have a working model of what the industry should be, getting music to people at a fair price and make it easy for them. I think they have to kind of find that model before it’s all going to work.” And selling physical CDs to kids for $19 is not what he considers a working model: “Hell, I was saying that in 1981.”
