Bike Team from Central Control Group Stop a Man from Jumping into the River

At 1810 hours, 26 Jun 07, Chicago Police Officers Robert Montelongo and Juan Salazar of the Central Control Group were on bike patrol in the vicinity of 401 N. Lake Shore when they observed an individual that fit the description of a wanted offender.  As the officers approached this subject he immediately started to run and began yelling "I want to die".  He then jumped off the bridge and the quick thinking Officer Montelongo, while still on his bike strapped to the pedals, was able to reach through the rails and catch the subject by his wrist.  Montelongo was able to hold on until Salazar came to assist.  Both officers maintained their grip on the subject as he attempted to pull away.  Two unkown citizens came to the aid of the officers and the four of them were able to pull the subject over the rail.  The depressed individual was transported to Northwestern for psychological evaluation.  Both officers sustained scrapes and bruises but will both be OK.

Quick thinking by alert police officers saved a man's life.  Good work.  Stay Safe!
