The Pipettes Postpone North American Tour
Disappointment: It's not love, but it's a feeling. And fans of neo girl group the Pipettes are gonna be feeling a twinge of that not-love feeling, as their North American tour, originally scheduled to kick off tomorrow in Chicago, has been postponed for a few weeks. The reason? Nothing dramatic: "a delay in visa paperwork."
Shame this sort of thing keeps happening to the Pipettes. As you'll recall, the release of the U.S. version of last year's We Are the Pipettes LP was pushed back from August 28 until tomorrow, October 2. But the album is still coming out tomorrow, and the Pips' tour has been rescheduled to begin October 25 in Los Angeles and end around Thanksgiving.
The L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Eugene, and Vancouver shows are still on, the Toronto show is set for November 18, and the full rescheduled itinerary is due shortly. We do know they'll be hitting San Diego, Denver, Austin, Atlanta, Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago on the new trek. Hopefully, Detroit, Washington D.C., Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, San Antonio, and Dallas aren't left out! [MORE...]
The Battles Prep New LP Under New Name, Giantess
All-female group They Might Be Giantesses contemplating name change of their own
The newly named foursome will commemorate the occasion with the release of their third album, the self-titled follow-up to last year's Tomorrow's Eager Hands. Giantess comes out October 9 on Soft Abuse. [MORE...]
Bob Mould Issues Friends DVD, Shows It Off on Tour
From his days in the incalculably influential Hüsker Dü to his work in the short-lived Sugar to his recent adventures in solodom, Bob Mould's always surrounded himself with just the right folks. Such is the case with Circle of Friends, a new live DVD culled from a a fall 2005 concert in Washington, DC that finds Mould getting neighborly with Fugazi's Brendan Canty, Richard Morel of Morel fame, and Rockets Over Sweden's Jason Narducy while performing tunes from across his oeuvre. The DVD will be released October 9 on Mould's own Granary Music.Mould plans to host a series of parties for his Friends on the road this fall, consisting of a 30 minute acoustic performance, a Q&A session, and a screening of the DVD. Care to watch a post-punk legend mill around while you watch a two-year-old recording of said legend tearing it up onstage? Dates-- and the Friends tracklist-- are below. [MORE...]
NEW RADIOHEAD ALBUM AAAAAAAHHH!!!
Update: Now with actual details
TODAY IS A GREAT DAY!
First, the Phillies clinched the NL East for the first time in 14 years! YESSSS!!!
AND NOW THIS!!!
Hello everyone.
Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;
We've called it In Rainbows.
Love from us all.
Jonny
Yup, that's right. A new Radiohead album, out October 10! Nice surprise, huh? It's called In Rainbows, duh. And it appears that Radiohead have chosen to not sign with a record label and are releasing it themselves via their website, at least for now.
And that's probably the least crazy aspect of this whole thing. [MORE...]
RadioheadLP7.com = Best RickRoll Ever!
Haha, you got us, guys! Good one! Thanks for not making me wake up early tomorrow morning, though. 'Preciate it!
Oh, but you should totally check out this Meg White sex tape...
Richard Lloyd (Ex-Television) Releases Radiant LP
Also busy with approximately 1,749 other things
Guitarist Richard Lloyd has kicked his Television habit, and now he's ready to broadcast solo signals in between writing a guitar instruction column for Guitar World magazine, giving private guitar lessons (those in the NYC area can email him at Lloyd206@aol.com to sign up), and appearing live to play and speak.
Tired yet? Well, if you'd prefer to just chillax and listen to Lloyd's new music, you can do so when he releases his new album, The Radiant Monkey, next month. The record comes out via Evangeline in the UK and Europe on October 2, and via Parasol in the U.S. and Canada on October 30.
And if you're in the mood to follow Lloyd around New York City for a handful of appearances, here's what his schedule looks like:
September 29: Perform "Jeepster" and play lead on a few other songs at a T. Rex tribute concert at Central Park's Delacorte Theatre.
October 6-8: Attend the Audio Engineering Society conference at the Javits Center, where there will be a listening station for The Radiant Monkey. Sign copies of the record.
October 16: Serve as a panelist on a CMJ panel entitled "Is Punk Really Dead?".
Thanks to reader Jay Pontrelli for the tip. [MORE...]
Meet Yuri Landman, Maker of Awesome Guitars for Sonic Youth, Liars, Blonde Redhead, Lightning Bolt
Lee Ranaldo's Moonlander guitar
All photos by Marinus de Ruiter
Guitarists like Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Aaron Hemphill of Liars, and Brian Gibson of Lightning Bolt are known for the deluges of sound that they wring from their instruments-- drones, fuzz, wails, rumbles, alarms, shrieks, and sometimes even actual notes and chords. But don't be surprised if these innovaters' riffs become even more face-melting soon, as they've got some new weapons in their arsenals: the creations of Dutch craftsman Yuri Landman.
On his website, the 34-year-old Landman describes himself as a "luthier specialized in experimental electric string-instruments". He builds some of the craziest, coolest guitars (and guitar-like things) we've ever seen. So far, he's built a guitar called the Moonlander for Lee Ranaldo and one called the Moodswinger for Aaron Hemphill. (You can hear the Moodswinger on the song "Leather Prowler" from the new Liars album.) He's currently working on instruments for Brian Gibson, Amadeo Pace of Blonde Redhead, and Jad Fair of Half Japanese.
Writer Marinus de Ruiter caught up with Landman at his Amsterdam studio, and chatted with him about his work. de Ruiter also took all of the photos, so you can drool over them as you please. If you happen to be in Amsterdam this weekend, Landman's work will be on display at the Output Festival. As part of the festival, Landman will give a talk tomorrow about "third bridging, overtone seris, and traditional musical scales."
Consider our minds officially blown.
Yuri Landman and his collection

Devin the Dude Tours With Del, Coughee Brothaz
If there's a run on Febreze, dryer sheets, and Little Debbie foodstuffs at your local stop'n'shop, you can bet you just missed the Devin the Dude caravan. Devin, his boys in Coughee Brothaz, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Bukue One, and Serendipity Project are presently out on a lengthy, slow-rollin' tour through the U.S, with Knobody, Junk Science, and Iller Than Theirs slated to pop up on select dates. The shows-- likely four hour ordeals peppered with drawn out monologues that go nowhere and a lot of beats best described as "slow"-- should be awesome, but man alive, I wouldn't wanna be on that tour bus when they get pulled over for a busted tail light.
Fittingly, Devin will follow up the big tour with a trip to Amsterdam's annual (perpetual?) Cannabis Cup. Fitting, cuz the dude likes weed. [MORE...]
David Thomas Broughton Cuts Mini-Album With 7 Hertz
Elusive-yet-prolific UK songwriter David Thomas Broughton will unleash his latest not-quite-full-length release via Spanish label Acuarela. The five-track, hour-long mini-album is a collaboration with experimental Leeds band 7 Hertz. It is simply, fittingly titled David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Hertz. It comes out in Spain on October 2, in the rest of Europe on October 22, and in the U.S. on October 23. It is, however, already available at your nearest digital outlet.
Broughton has a few shows scattered through the end of this year as well. His next date is in Leeds, England on September 29. [MORE...]
The Blow Kick Off Brief Fall Tour Tomorrow
Photo by Sarah CassNow that Khaela Maricich's flying solo in the Blow, how does she entertain herself on those long, dull hours on the road without her buddy Jona Bechtholt to keep her amused? Books on tape? A rousing game of solitaire eye spy? Singing along with Fergie songs on the radio?
These burning questions and more-- plus some music, presumably-- will all be sorted out on the Blow's all too brief fall tour, kicking off tomorrow night in Grinnell, Iowa. With only a week on the road and nary a particularly long trip between dates, she might not make it all the way through War & Peace, but she'll probably finally have the time to learn Harry Potter's fate. Don't ruin it for the rest of us, Maricich. [MORE...]
Baltimore's Videohippos Hit the Road
In his review of their Unbeast the Leash, Pitchfork's Mike Powell referred to Baltimore's Videohippos as creators of "terse theme songs for an eight-hour day of cartoons and video games." So stuff a couple pixie sticks down your gullet, pack extra batteries for your Gameboy, and head out to see these Videohippos as they tour a wide swath of North America. The Dan Deacon-affiliated Hippos have a date with that beloved weirdo and shows with quite a few other strange sorts besides. Just pray the show's over before the pesky saccharine crash sets in. [MORE...]
Rock Hall Noms: Madonna, Beasties, Cohen, Summer
Plus: John Mellencamp, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, Dave Clark Five, the Ventures
The Roll and Roll Hall of Fame today announced the finalists in its annual beautyrock pageant, with nine of music's finest vying for five imaginary tiaras and five very real invitations into the hallowed pantheon next year.
Madonna, the Beastie Boys, Leonard Cohen, Donna Summer, Afrika Bambaataa, John Mellencamp, Chic, the Dave Clark Five, and the Ventures all lead the Class of 2008. To be eligible for induction, an act must have released its first single at least 25 years ago.
From these nine, the lucky five will be chosen by what the Rock Hall site calls an "international voting body of more than 500 rock experts," and immortalized at a March 10, 2008 ceremony at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The chosen will join last year's inductees-- R.E.M., Patti Smith, the Ronettes, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Van Halen-- and, like, Elvis and stuff in the Cleveland edifice and in our hearts forever.
God knows why, but Tom Waits, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Abba, Kraftwerk, and the Stooges aren't in there yet.
Do you have a news tip for us? Anything crazy happen at a show you attended recently? Do you have inside info on the bands we cover? Is one of your favorite artists (that's not somebody you know personally) releasing a new record you'd like to see covered? You will remain completely anonymous, unless we are given your express permission to reveal your identity. (Please note that publicists, managers, booking agents, and other artist representatives are generally exempt from this rule, but will also be granted anonymity if requested.)
