Police have confirmed that the money found in Newforge Country Club, Belfast is money, which was stolen in the Northern Bank robbery.

Five shrink-wrapped packages were discovered by police in toilets at the Sports Club last night.  Each package contained £10,000 of new Northern Bank notes.  The notes bear consecutive serial numbers, which correspond, to the numbers notified to police by the bank.

Police would reiterate their belief that this incident is an effort to distract the police from investigating the Northern Bank robbery and also to divert attention away from events elsewhere.

A call was received by the Police Ombudsman's office from a male caller purporting to be a police officer.  As a result of this call, police carried out a search at Newforge and packages of what appeared to be money were found. These are currently being examined. No further details
