The Media Research Center’s (MRC’s) Youth Education and Intern Program was created in 1992 to mentor America’s youth and to have a positive impact on future reporters, educators, and leaders by educating and training students to recognize bias and the need for balanced journalism.
Since
1992 the MRC has provided internships for over
100 college and university students. Interns
receive hands-on experience in the News Analysis
Division, Cybercast News Service - CNSNews.com,
Business & Media Institute, Marketing Department, or Development Department to assist their pursuit of professional careers in journalism, mass media, public relations, marketing and government.
MRC interns attend internal staff meetings and events such as lectures with guest speakers and conferences; external events with local conservative organizations such as The Heritage Foundation, The Leadership Institute, and
special occasions with Brent Bozell to listen, learn and ask questions.
Students nationwide apply for MRC intern positions. Students are recruited from local area college and universities including: American University, Catholic University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Georgetown University and Regent University; and nationwide from: Christendom College, Patrick Henry, Grove City, Hillsdale College, Hampden Sydney, James Madison, Hanover and Michigan. The MRC’s interns have also hailed from Indiana, Maryland,
Washington, Ohio and Nebraska.
The
MRC also works with organizations such as: The
Heritage Foundation, The CATO Institute, The
American Enterprise Institute, The Leadership
Institute, The Fund for American Studies, Eagle
Publishing, Collegiate Network, and the National
Journalism Center of the Young America’s
Foundation, and the University Career Action
Network consortium to recruit interns and to
participate in an internship exchange program.
The MRC advertises its intern program in its
publications, newsletters and on its
often-visited websites www.MediaResearch.org and
Cybercast News Service- www.CNSNews.com.
Intern candidates must submit an application form, cover letter, resume, and two to three brief writing samples. Specific qualifications include: solid writing skills, knowledge of current events and politics, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Internet use, adaptability to new software applications, and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Candidates must have a passion for politics, journalism, and/or research as well as possess a firm understanding of conservative principles based on limited government, individual liberty paired with responsibility, free enterprise, and a strong national defense.
Qualified
candidates are evaluated on their knowledge of current events in order
to determine which division of the MRC would best suit their needs and
interests. The MRC financially compensates interns and they have the
option to work up to 37.5 hours per week.
Interns are integral members of the divisions with which they work, and as students, they receive extra attention and mentoring to ensure their MRC
experience is valuable. The Youth Education and
Intern Program Coordinator works in conjunction with members from each division to oversee the progress of all interns. Interns are also afforded time to attend functions and activities outside of the MRC and may receive academic credit for their work through special arrangements with their schools.
Several of the Media Research Center's interns
have become full-time employees of the MRC.
Current employees that were once interns include
Ken Shepherd, News Media Analyst in the News
Analysis Division and David Bozell, Development
Associate in the Development Division.
In
addition to providing internships, the MRC also
has an extensive education outreach program.
Each year over 200 college and university
students attend lectures/seminars at the MRC’s
headquarters. Students tour the MRC and listen
to presentations by members of the MRC’s staff
including Brent Bozell and Tim Graham. These
lectures/seminars are an important part of
college and university curricula and are
utilized as a way for students to receive
first-hand knowledge and information.
The MRC promotes its research and information to college campuses across the country to assist in student research projects.
Nearly 10,000 college and university
students access

Cybercast News Service - www.CNSNews.com
and Business & Media Institute -

annually and the MRC is working to extensively
expand that universe by partnering with other,
like-minded conservative student organizations.
Through its Youth
Education and Intern Program the MRC
is able to maintain its commitment to educating
America’s youth.
“This is an
internship where any kind of journalist can feel comfortable – from the most
inexperienced newbie to a seasoned vet, CNSNews.com manages to tailor the
experience to your needs and works with you to make sure you’re always
learning and developing."
– Nathan Burchfiel, CNSNews.com Intern, Woodstock, MD
“Oftentimes as a young conservative, you feel like there are no other people out there who share your values and political outlook. My internship at MRC showed me that not only do such people exist, but that they are tirelessly working for the causes I believe in, and making a difference for the better.”
