Mancio scorn on Milan cup
Saturday 15 December, 2007

Inter boss Roberto Mancini stoked the rivalry with Milan by suggesting the Club World Cup is little more than a friendly tournament.

“I am not supporting one side or the other. I cheer on Inter and could do for Sampdoria and Lazio, the two teams I played for, but I watch the others simply because I enjoy football,” said Mancio ahead of Sunday’s Final between the Rossoneri and Boca Juniors.

The format of the competition has changed since Milan’s last participation in 2003, as it now involves clubs from the different confederations in Asia and Australasia.

“I think it was better when the Intercontinental Cup was a one-off match between the champions of Europe and South America. Done this way it looks like a friendly tournament.

“It seems absurd to me playing six games for this contest. There are only two teams that deserve to play in the Final.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s men had to overcome Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds in the semi-final, while Boca saw off Etoile 3-1 on their way to Yokohama.

Mancio also turned his scorn on the Italian media, who have suggested the Coach had requests for January reinforcements turned down by President Massimo Moratti.

“Every time controversy breaks out because there are stupid things written about Inter. They are trying to cause problems between the President and myself on players who may or may not arrive.

“They are trying everything to stir up trouble and suggest there is a power struggle, but they are not getting anywhere because we keep doing better.”

Inter have other matters to contend with, as the Serie A leaders take on Cagliari on Sunday.

“It may seem like an easy game on paper, but it really isn’t. I saw Cagliari play against Milan and they did very well, so if we don’t approach this match the right way they will cause is problems.

“They have talented young players and do not deserve to be at the foot of the table. David Suazo played a great game on Wednesday and is in good shape.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic sits out a ban, so former Cagliari star Suazo should keep his place upfront alongside Julio Cruz.

“This is not the first time we have played without Ibrahimovic and the team always did well enough,” insisted Mancini.

“He is very important for us, but that doesn’t mean anything right now.”

Inter squad: Julio Cesar, Orlandoni, Alfonso; Cordoba, Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas, Samuel, Chivu; Cambiasso, Solari, Pelè, Cesar; Cruz, Crespo, Suazo, Balotelli
