Telecommunications Market Reports

Europe - Broadband Market - Overview & Statistics - Updated: 28 October 2005

Broadband growth in Europe has been substantial during the last few years. The region overtook North America in 2005 to become the second largest broadband market after Asia. By mid-2005 there were about 47 million broadband subscribers in Europe. This growth – 72% on 2004 and 236% since 2002 – has been driven by intensifying competition and by regulatory measures to improve competitor access to local loops. The major operators have also offset their eroding voice telephony revenues by investing in IP services. The leading broadband markets in 2004 and 2005 were Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, while the UK showed the fastest growth. The main growth driver is xDSL, followed by cable. Fibre has also had an improving footprint in certain markets, notably Scandinavia and Italy. Satellite Internet and wireless broadband have a niche presence, though the European Commission (EC) has facilitated the use of WLANs for accessing public services, and WiFi has been widely deployed in Europe. This report from Paul Budde presents statistics and analysis on Europe’s broadband market in 2005, including developments in ADSL, cable, fibre and wireless technologies, and noting the status of EU and government policies to encourage broadband take-up in 2006 and 2007. Europe - Mobile Market - Overview & Statistics - Updated: 28 October 2005

This report provides statistics and analysis on the mobile phone market in Europe in 2005. Individual countries are considered in the context of subscriber numbers, mobile penetration, and market growth, though the focus is on issues that are common to all countries in the region. The report introduces the key legal issues relating to roaming and interconnection, together with the status of analogue and digital technologies. The key mobile operators across Europe are profiled, including statistics on their customer base, financial results and strategies for 2006.

Europe - Mobile Market - 3G & Mobile Data - Updated: 28 October 2005

The release of 3G licences in 2000 and 2001 was the most significant event in Europe’s mobile industry. Take-up of 3G services was initially hesitant, but there was solid growth during 2004 and 2005. New technological developments, the delivery of reliable handsets and a greater awareness of 3G capabilities, particularly in the youth sector, are positive indicators for continued if moderate growth in subscribers numbers in 2006. This report reviews 3G networks and services in Europe in 2005, including an assessment of network sharing and spectrum trading. It also analyses 3G data applications such as mobile TV, SMS, MMS, i-mode and location based services. The report reviews the status and deployment of emerging technologies such as EDGE and HSDPA, together with the effect these may have on the mobile landscape in 2006 and beyond.
