New Music: The Setting Suns: "Cold War Kids" [Stream]

The Setting Suns are a two-person side project featuring Adam Franklin (Swervedriver, Toshack Highway) and Sam Fogarino (Interpol). The unlikely pairing sounds like some rock critic's fantasy, and, in this case, the truth isn't too far off. Turns out introductions were provided by Jack Rabid of Big Takeover fame. Despite the somewhat ominous name, the Setting Suns tread closer to Franklin's atmospheric solo work-- buoyant, chiming guitar counterbalancing Franklin's world-weary vocals. It's easy to see why Fogarino might be drawn to Franklin's classic sensibilities. Less clear is Franklin's attraction-- "Cold War Kids" wouldn't sound out of place on any of his post-Swervedriver EPs or LPs. But perhaps he realized that new tricks are overrated, especially when consistency doesn't suffer diminishing returns.
