Bubblegum Crisis
Complete Vocal Collection vol. 1

Overall Review...

Reviewed Copy: Futureland (LD32-5114)
Printed: 10/24/90

Though I never really watched much of the original Bubblegum Crisis series, I loved the idea of all that punk '80s rock. So I picked up this album thinking there would be a few songs on here I'd probably really like.

Well, yes, there are a few I do really like. The first half of this album has the best songs (minus that stupid Bluew song...), which is a little annoying when you get to the second half. The Knight Sabers perform some mediocre songs and Priss sings fewer and fewer numbers... but at least her first three solos are GREAT. Those songs and "Kodoku No Angel" make this album worth owning.

However, if you really don't like the beat of 1987, this is a terrible purchase. I like it, so I'm happy. If you're a Priss fan, buy this. If you favor Linna, Nene, or Sylia, grab the 2nd album, which has solos for each of the girls. The biggest disappointment comes from the fact that this is based on chronological order... meaning Vision's songs don't make the cut. Oh well, I'll get that album eventually, I'm sure.

Track Reviews...

Name: "Konya Wa Hurricane"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: opening

The very first OAV opening. I'm sure when the series first came out the intro probably caught a few people off guard. It was... cool. Well, if you can think back on the '80s and smile warmly, then yeah, it was neat. Actually, all the openings were like that; they were ALWAYS my favorite part of the few episodes I saw. This is also probably the most famous of the BGC songs, performed by none other than Priss.

Grade: A

Name: "Kodoku No Angel"
Artist: Knight Sabers
Type: vocal

The first of several group songs for the Knight Sabers. The Knight Sabers seiyuu group consists of Kinuko Omori ("Priss"), Yoshiko Sakabara ("Sylia"), Michie Tomizawa ("Linna"), and Akiko Hiramatsu ("Nene"). Two very good '80s singers in that group, the others kind of add the lower and higher voices to the blend. I like this, which seems to just serve as a song everyone can sing.

Grade: A-

Name: "Remember"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: vocal

A slower, more moody song for Priss. She gets some good songs. I really like how she sings this... her seiyuu is virtually unknown other than her Bubblegum Crisis role. Perhaps she was actually a singer just doing the seiyuu thing once. Well, it works, as she sounds very nice here. One of the nicer songs on the album.

Grade: A

Name: "Mr. Dandy"
Artist: Bluew
Type: ending

"HEY MISTER DANDY!!! HEY MISTER JOY!!!" I did not appreciate this song when I first heard it... and I still don't! My least favorite song on the whole album, it's really only amusing at the part I sang above. Otherwise, it's a raspy sounding Michael Bolton wannabe singer when it SHOULD be Priss and the others. Or nobody at all... the song itself isn't very good either. The first OAV ending.

Grade: C

Name: "Mad Machine"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: vocal

And here's a track I enjoy very much. Many people don't like this song, and I can only come up with two reasons why; either they hate most '80s music OR they laugh at the useage of the title, "Mad Machine". Well, I look past that... it's actually kinda cool in this song, I think. I used to not care for this much either, but now it's my favorite opening song. It's the 2nd opening, by the way. I love the chorus... well, I love it all actually. But I am a SUCKER for this kind of stuff.

Name: "Thrill Ni Odoru Angel-tachi"
Artist: Knight Sabers
Type: vocal

Another song for our four main girls. This one reminds me a lot of the song "Remember", but it doesn't sound nearly as good ^_^;; The girls don't blend too well on this song and it's not as interesting to listen to as, say, "Kodoku No Angel" or others. Yeah, this is just kind of a bleh version of "Remember" by the group and it doesn't play as well as some of the other songs.

Grade: B-

Name: "Kizu Darake No Wild"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: ending

The 2nd OAV ending theme... you know, these endings fall a little flat compared to their openings. So far, at least. When I first heard this I nearly did a double take... it doesn't quite match the other songs on the album. It's kinda... cheery... of all things. And there's no edge to it. And it's Priss singing. Say what? Well, I don't NOT like it, but I never recognize this when it comes up on my playlist.

Grade: B

Name: "Victory"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: vocal

Ah, here we go, Priss, back to your usual stuff. An upbeat song for our rock queen, it's a little bit like "Konya Wa Hurricane", only without the sexy. I guess. I actually like where she just repeats "Never say give up!"... she sounds like she's saying "Grow up!" though.

Grade: B+

Name: "Asu E Touchdown"
Artist: Knight Sabers
Type: vocal

A little better than their previous attempt, Priss and the girls are back for another quick song. This sounds similar to their above two songs... typical Knight Saber stuff. Moving right along...

Grade: B

Name: "Wasurenaide"
Artist: Kinuko Omori
Type: ending

The third OAV ending... wait, where's the 3rd opening??? Is there not one? Why is it not on this album? Is "Victory" the opening? I'm a little lost now. This is one of the nicer endings, with a rather melancholy beat. It's still not the greatest ending, but I'll take this over "Mr. Dandy" any day.

Grade: B+

Name: "Crisis ~Ikari Wo Komete Hashire~"
Artist: Yuiko Tsubokura
Type: opening

What? An opening NOT sung by Priss? I guess she was busy... though I wish she'd come back. I like her voice better than this chick's, though she's not bad really. Does anyone know if AnimEigo ever released an album or anything for their dubbed BGC songs? I really enjoyed them, and the lyrics were usually pretty close. This is decent enough, but for some reason I don't care for the 4th opening as much.

Grade: B+

Name: "Akuma To Tenshi No Kiss"
Artist: Knight Sabers
Type: vocal

Another Knight Sabers song. This time, the girls just don't sound as good-- even Priss and Linna are bleh. They've got some good songs, but I guess they're over on the 2nd vocal album, which I don't own yet.

Grade: B-

Name: "Twilight"
Artist: Yuiko Tsubokura
Type: ending

The final song is the 4th ending theme. It's okay... the singer sounds pretty good, but I don't like these type of songs too much. I tend to stop listening to them without realizing it. Slow, lovey... feh, I want my "Mad Machine"s and "Konya Wa Hurricane"s. Thanks, though.
