Background Geology of the North Bay area.

To understand this unique country it is helpful to know what events shaped lands!

Much of what follows comes from   Natural Resources Canada - Geoscape Ottawa-Gatineau - Deep Time   which is fairly close and is a presentation that would be hard to improve apon.

All of North America is underlain by very old basement rocks which are now exposed and known as the Canadian Shield.

"These rocks have been crumpled, torn, submerged, uplifted, eroded, heated, cooled, poked through with volcanoes, pierced underneath by super hot magma and gouged by glaciers, over and over again, and not necessarily in that order."

  • The latest major event was the Laurentide Ice Sheet
