Image : The Surge Chamber

The surge chamber, which runs parallel to the machine hall, receives the water as it leaves the turbines and distributes it among the four tailrace tunnels. The surge chamber's job is to dampen excess variations in pressure that can occur during unit startup, sudden shutdowns, or changes in flow rate.

This cavern is 450 m long, 45 m high and 14 m wide at its base.
