The Onion (A.V. Club)
Three polka-dotted women with perfectly suited voices front The Pipettes, but it's the work of mastermind Monster Bobby and the rest of the backing band that elevates these 16 nuggets far beyond the disposable pop implied by the setup.

Pitchfork
While We Are the Pipettes often swells and soars... it doesn't come near the symphonic grandeur of the best of 60s girl pop. At its best, however, these pocket-sized songs still burst with verve and vitality, mixing heart-pumping melodies with carefree, almost conversational vocals.

And while every song contains allusions to forgotten surf rockish guitar chords and Duke Ellington violins, the real fun is in the way the Pipettes play off each other in harmony.

New York Magazine
Their debut album, released in the U.S. this week, proves that the Brighton lasses aren't only well constructed, but sharp and tough all on their own.

There's so much of this record that causes a big smile to split your face that it can't be described as anything other than a success.

The Guardian
It's heavy on Motown basslines, dramatic strings and love affairs that thrive and die on the dance floor. But the victim culture of the girl group classics is replaced by a punk-edged, polka-dot feminism.

A disco-swept dreamland. [Aug 2006, p.83]

PopMatters
Aside from the copious harmonies, what characterizes the Pipettes’ is a blend of rinky-dink instrumentation with an almost smug confidence in their concept, which allows them to carry it over without ever provoking the listener’s skepticism.

What is interesting about the Pipettes is that they're creating incredibly catchy, well-made pop music.... But their music could be something more.

The Pipettes have none of Winehouse’s soul aspirations--just better songs and more sex.

Outwardly, We Are the Pipettes is fun, sweet, and attractive. If you hang around, it starts to feel brittle, frigid, bitchy, and weird.

Though more than pastiche, it's not pop genius yet either. [Aug 2006, p.114]

Dot Music
Trouble is, despite the band's concerted efforts to beef up and broaden their schtick with a radio-friendly production, too many aspects scream "novelty act".

New Musical Express
Faux-feminist tracks such as 'Dirty Mind' are more Austin Powers than Phil Spector, too self-conscious to hit the heart-bursting heights of the originals, too much a pastiche to forge anything new. [15 Jul 2006, p.37]

Tiny Mix Tapes
The Pipettes are only fresh in the sense that they've appropriated Spector-influenced girl-pop for a new era.

Beelay gave it an8:
Not usually a huge fan of sugary, bubbly stuff like this, but the Pipettes are like a sweet, syrupy virus that gets in your head and is tough to shake. I don't think they take themselves too seriously, and neither should anyone else. They are a (guilty?) pleasure to have some fun with.

martin a. gave it a10:
I love them, great songs, great album, great band, different style, I like it, cute girls

Andy gave it a6:
The single is great but unfortunately the most in-depth instrumentally the album ever becomes. Bringing girl-group pop to the hearts of indie fans is a great idea but they could have put a little more emphasis on better instrumentation and song structure. To stay true to pop music doesn't mean the Pipettes have to regurgitate the same song progressions. Hopefully, they will spend as much time developing the songs on their next album as they did developing their "cuteness" on this debut.

Brendan D gave it a7:
I really don't get why everybody's so ga-ga over the Pipettes. "Pull Shapes" is catchy as hell, and contrary to the prevailing Spector references, it's much closer to early '60s R&B;, as if Little Eva's doing the Locomotion on amphetamines. But what's great, or special, about the rest of the record? Bubblegum pop is supposed to be about the chorus; everyone from ABBA to the Ramones will show you that. With the extremely notable exception of "Pull Shapes," the choruses don't gel all that well, the most notorious offender being "Judy," which is an average pop song disguised as genius. However, what's really disheartening about the Pipettes is that the come so very, very close to perfection but, like the acid-eaters of the mid-'60s, miss the target entirely. For evidence of this, look no further than "Why Did You Stay?" It's got all the makings of a perfect get-you-outta-my-head tune akin to ABBA's "Waterloo." It falls apart, however, with a mundanely average chorus, which should be the strongest part of the song. Now, that's not to say this is a bad record by any stretch. It's got some catchy hooks, and "Pull Shapes" is worth the price of admission alone. Couple that with production reminiscent of the Go! Team's first record, and you've got some impressive stuff here, a debut that hints at the possibility of good things to come. But those calling this genius really need to go back and listen to those Spector and Gordy records from the early '60s, along with some ABBA and very early Ramones, to find out what pop is REALLY about.

kevin a gave it a10:
14 songs all under 3 minutes... and half of those under two! In a little more than half an hour the Pipettes restored my faith in rock and roll. This cd has not left my player since the day I bought it. ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!

mike gave it a10:
great great great!!

tim e gave it a9:
Adorable! There looks alone win me over. Reminds me of ABBA, Camera Obscura and Phil Spector.
