You can access all of your Pownce notes just on our website or you can download a small program for your computer.
The software is available right now for Windows and Mac users and will be available for Linux soon too. It takes advantage of a new technology from Adobe called AIR, which is super useful.
Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You'll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast.
At least to start, we're only opening up the site to a few people who can invite their friends. Soon, we'll let some more people in. Enter your email to get in on one of the next rounds of invites.
Right now, there are four basic things you can send: messages, links, files, and events.
You might send an event out to a dozen of your friends letting them know you're hosting a party this Friday. They could easily get the event details you entered, respond with questions or comments and then quickly rsvp.
Say you had a great photo you wanted to share with all of your friends. Just add the file and all of your friends will get it right away. They'll be able to reply and tell you if it's cool. You could even post songs you recorded in your home studio to share with your friends.
Only the people you choose get to see what you sent. Kind of like CC'ing an email, only recipients can see and respond to what you send. You can make public notes too that (you guessed it) the public at large can read and respond to.
All the basic features are totally free. We run some small advertisements in your list of notes but you can send and receive pretty much anything. You can also upgrade to a pro account for a really reasonable annual price, which gives you some nice things like no ads, the ability to send much bigger files, a wider variety of themes, and more.
The screenshots below give you an idea of just some of the things you can do. You'll be able to choose a theme and personalize your own profile page.
Pownce is brought to you by a bunch of geeks who were frustrated trying to send stuff from one cube to another.
The team consists of Leah Culver, Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen. Together, we formed a wee company with a great big name, Megatechtronium, that makes this software. Read more about us...
At least to start, we're keeping some control over registration so that we can scale the system under control. Scaling? It basically means that if a ton of people joined all at once at the beginning our site might slow down to a crawl. That would suck for everyone. So, as we get confident with the performance of the site, we'll begin letting more and more people in.
Thanks for patience if you didn't get an invite right away. Enter your email above to get on the list for new invites.
But of course. We haven't had the chance to build a self-service advertising system (something we might do in the future) so send us an email to email@example.com and we'll work with you to run a campaign that suits your needs. Big or small, we can likely build a campaign with you.
