ECPAT Spain launches a new campaign
against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC)

23 June 2004

The ECPAT Spain Consortium and their partner UNICEF Spain, together with the Spanish Ministry of Work and Social Affairs and the Spanish General Secretary of Tourism, and in collaboration with other organisations, including the World Tourism Organization (WTO), the Spanish Federation of Associations for Child Abuse Prevention (FAPMI), the Spanish National Police and INTERPOL, the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality (ICTE), the Spanish Office of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Spanish Agency of International Co-operation (AECI) and the hotel company HOTETUR, has launched a campaign against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism.

The campaign’s main goal is the prevention of CSEC by raising the awareness of people travelling from Spain to tourist destinations known to offer the opportunity to engage in sexual relationships with minors.

The action of public awareness-raising will be implemented by means of pamphlets, posters, stickers or a videotape, and this is only an aspect of the Campaign against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel. The campaign also includes other actions of sensitization and specific training aimed both at the tourist sector and at the media and other professionals. In addition, the organisers are negotiating the necessary support of the Spanish tourism industry, an indispensable ally for the actions of protection of children’s rights to have bigger effectiveness.
