Best Comedy:
Knocked Up
Following up his 2005 directorial debut,
The 40 Year-Old Virgin, comedy filmmaker Judd Apatow hit another one out of the park this year with
Knocked Up. The movie starred Apatow go-to guy Seth Rogan as Ben, a slacker who lives with his buddies and spends his days getting high while developing a pseudo-pornographic business. One fateful night, Ben crosses paths with Alison, played by hottie Katherine Heigl, a go-getting E! network employee who is out at the club celebrating her promotion to on-air status. They have a few drinks and the title tells the rest.
Knocked Up's run-of-the-mill scenario is elevated with extremely clever writing, and the really great chemistry between Rogan and Heigl. Apatow continues to show a real knack for creating hilarious on-screen scenarios that are easily accessible to mainstream movie audiences. The film has some deliciously dirty moments that would make your momma blush, but it has a genuine sweetness that's been missing from the raunchy comedy genre for a while. It should also be noted that Apatow served as producer on our runner-up pick,
Superbad, cementing his status as the new king of movie comedy.
