As many webmasters and regular web-surfers would know, an online forum community is a great place to meet large groups of people online. Forums provide a means through which visitors to a website can interact with one another and exchange ideas or reviews of products or just talk about anything under the sun. Acute marketers and webmasters will already know that these communities are often excellent places for free advertising.

Network marketing has quickly become one of the fastest growing ways to work at home. Sometimes called Multi Level Marketing or Affiliate Marketing, Network marketing is based around the concept of recruiting. You join a program that utilizes network marketing to sell a product, and you make money by recruiting new sellers who have purchased their products from you and are now selling their own. You may get a cut of their sales and their recruits' sales and so on for many levels. The possibilities are endless, and so is the income potential. So it sounds all gravy right? All you have to do is get your business up and running by joining the program of your choice and recruiting new prospects.

Last week I got a call from Jose, who was looking for help improving his ads. He'd been running the same ad in four local papers for two months and only gotten one response. He was understandably frustrated. With more than a dozen very satisfied clients, he knows that the residential property management services he and his brother provide should interest more people, but he wasn't having any success getting attention or generating leads.

"Viral Marketing" is giving something away for free and allowing people to pass it on to others. The main purpose of viral marketing is to spread your message to as many people as possible without having to spend any money for advertising.
In order to start an effective viral marketing campaign, you need to provide people with a reason for passing your information around. For example, jokes are often passed around just because they are funny. However, how often have you forwarded an ad for an eBook on to other people? Unless you were an affiliate of that eBook, you probably never sent it on to a single person.

If you are anything like me, you’d probably like to have a website on the Internet but you just have no idea how to go about it. All this talk of web hosting, bandwidth, disc space, and other jargon can cause one to say, “This is too complicated and technical, I just wanted to have a place to put all of my favorite skateboarding photos, cool information on ramp designs, and the best places to skate!” To get a website on the Web you have to go through a web host. The question is how do you find the web host for you?

Web marketing has taken on many different shapes during the last 5 years. It has gone from banner advertising to e-mail campaigns, and now we are in the age of pay-per-click systems like Overture and Google Adwords. While everybody may not agree about the effectiveness of using pay-per-clicks advertising, the one thing nobody can take away from them is their ability to drive traffic to a website.

This is another one of the controversial questions in many of the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) forums, yet it is very easy to answer for any particular search engine. While popular belief seems to be that pages should be very short (less than 10K) to rank well with the leading search engine, this article conclusively answers that question… with a completely different answer.

It only makes sense. You have an e-commerce catalog site. You want lots of visitors to come to your site and buy. The best (and most cost-effective) way to do that is with great search engine placement. However, search engines are text machines, and most catalogs don’t have a lot of text, so herein lies the problem.

Since last week, Yahoo
doesn't display Google results anymore. Yahoo has
started to use its own new search engine software.
Although almost all experts expected it, Yahoo isn't
replacing Google with its own Inktomi technology. Yahoo
has developed a brand new search engine, based on Inktomi,
AltaVista and AllTheWeb technology.
Yahoo's search engine spider is capturing the full
text of web pages, up to a 500,000 characters limit.
The new Yahoo search also supports many file types,

Managing Your Personal Brand for Optimal Success
Once upon a time, our value to companies was linked to our loyalty and longevity. We wore the corporate uniform, knew how many steps it would take to get to the top, and received a nice pension plan when we retired after 30 years of loyal service. But the days of corporate uniforms and pension plans are long gone. And with them, job security. Today, as marketing professionals in the new world of work, we need to manage our own careers. And we must do so in the midst of budget cuts, layoffs and restructuring.

Oftentimes, my web design and search engine optimization clients ask me to explain Google's "Page Rank" designation. Since this can play an important role in the amount of targeted fr^ee traffic you receive to your web site, I've decided to explain it here in the simplest of layman's terms.
To begin with, if you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say "Page Rank", I suggest you download the Google toolbar. If you're serious about gaining the advantage of search engine traffic, you'll want to use the research ability that this tool affords you.

The first step in a search engine optimization campaign is to choose your keywords or keyphrases for each of your web pages. Keywords are the terms that search engine users type in the search box to conduct a query. The right keywords are those that:
a) clearly describe the purpose and content of your site, and,
b) allow your site to show up as close to the first results page as possible.

With 40 million websites in existence, and more than 3 billion web pages indexed by Google at the time of this writing (July 2003), it’s no wonder that more and more people are relying on search engines to find their way through the unruly world that the web has become.
Nowadays, it is crucial to get your pages indexed by the most important search engines. To maximize traffic to your site, you must make sure that all your internal pages are indexed, not just your main page (homepage).

If you have the slightest thought of selling anything online,
you must be able to answer one question before you do
anything...
Who wants to buy your product or service?
If you're going to sell, there has to be a market that will
buy, it's an irrefutable law of business and it applies to
online businesses as well.
"Catering to a niche" or "specializing" or "targeting a
market," whatever you call it, it's the key to a small
business succeeding on the Internet.
Let Amazon or Ebay sell everything to everyone. Small online
businesses target a few select markets and give those markets
the special attention that only small businesses can give.

Who says publicity stunts are passé? Outrageous staged
events designed solely to show up on the evening news still get the job done when they're clever and fun.
Stan Heimowitz, owner of Celebrity Gems in Castro Valley, California, not long ago successfully dramatized in the streets of San Francisco the fact that IntraLinux, a small software company -- Heimowitz's client -- is challenging Microsoft,
the industry giant.

There are many low cost ways to market your service or product both on the Web. All require tiresome manual research and constant attention. However, as a fellow entrepreneur, I can assure you that they will eventually pay off if you do it right. The search engines are a wonderful resource. One of the newer, more advanced, very accurate and rapidly growing is Google. Google's proprietary PageRank© system is used to determine how relevant your site is. We have uncovered some of what makes Google tick.
First, to view your sites PageRank©, simply download the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, and visit your sites home page. Ironically, while we researched Google we stumbled upon the formula by conducting a search in Google.

Hiring a good marketing firm is critical to the success of any business. Here are some things to look for.
First, it’s important to understand the distinction between a company that limits itself to advertising and one that operates as a consultant to your business and has developed marketing expertise. The advantage of an advertising firm is they will easily take direction and implement direct mail programs, print ads, and/or radio and television commercials. The downside is your small company may need more diversity and direction.
Hiring a company that partners with you because as well as brings years of marketing experience to the table is ultimately more valuable. The upside is your company will get the exposure it needs to create more sales and profit, and you’ll learn more about marketing along the way.
In today’s world, you have all the options of print media as well the vehicles that fuel e-commerce. First decide if your firm can benefit from an online marketing plan, then factor that into your budget and allocate enough for print and/or internet-related programs. Which brings us to a critical factor in this process – your budget.
Budget
Successful companies typically spend 22 percent of their marketing budget on direct marketing for their products and services. To determine how you will spend your marketing dollars, you need to determine your short- and long-term goals as well as what results are willing to accept? For example, if you want to secure five new projects before the end of a period, look back historically and estimate how many contacts your sales people make before getting one hot lead. Of those, how many do you estimate you can close?
What we want here is averages, not the exception to the rule. With these numbers you can determine how many direct mail pieces you’ll need to deliver based on a conservative return on investment (ROI) using an estimate of .5 to 1 percent. Of course you’ll increase that ROI with disciplined follow through such as phone calls. But knowing the amount of money you can afford to spend on reaching your number goal leads you to the next step – finding a company that can deliver on time and on budget.

When you are starting out in a new home business and no one
knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will
face is how to drum up new business.
If there were not people in your community or marketplace that
you knew who needed your products or services, you probably
would not have started your business to begin with. But, once
you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed
your what you offer, then your next task is to find others
who will help keep your doors open.

Have you ever wondered why car
dealerships use crazy tactics like
shining lights that point nowhere into
the sky, clowns walking on stilts, and
balloons that tower into the sky?
These crazy ideas seem pointless. But,
if you think about it, all the car dealerships
are doing is setting themselves apart from the
competition and getting prospective car-buyers
to walk in the door.
What if you could get website traffic to
"walk" to your website with the need for
your goods or services?

To succeed in the digital marketplace you must focus your marketing.
Here are a few tips that emphasize positioning, top of mind awareness,
and delivering a focused-impact.
1. Positioning is a powerful concept in marketing. To illustrate, have
you ever visited a fast food restaurant, and, in a rush to complete
your order asked for a coke when you "perhaps" meant to order
some other soft drink? The Coke brand and its owners have
achieved a top of mind awareness. Their brand name has become
synonymous with a commodity that has a strong demand.

The telephone is still the best and most effective way to reach people. It can help generate more sales and build your business. Unfortunately most people don’t like the telephone and don’t use it effectively. In order to become more proficient using the telephone, you need to follow some basic guidelines and then practice, practice and then practice some more.
Like everything else, selling by using the telephone has changed over the years. The hard sell approach doesn’t cut it today. With voice mail, answering machines, tele-zappers, and caller ID the old fashion way doesn’t work any longer.

Search Engine traffic has always been and continues to be one of the best ways to drive qualified traffic to a web site - it presents information about goods and services when the interest level is high and it can be acted on immediately. Up till now opt-in e-mail marketing has been an effective complement to search engine ranking campaigns; but the never-ending deluge of Spam is rapidly ruining the effectiveness of opt-in e-mail and helping to add luster to the value and cost-effectiveness of search engine traffic.

Have you ever noticed that when you look at your browser favorites menu or the address bar, some entries have their own little icon beside their URL?
It's called a "Favicon" (a graphic file with a .ico extension) and it's placed in the root directory of the web site. Everytime you bookmark a site that has its own favicon.ico file, it is added to your browser, and it will be visible from then on in the favorites menu and in the address bar.

How do you know when your advertising dollars are being well spent? First, let’s expose two of the most common fallacies about advertising. Number one is that good advertising magically generates so many leads you have trouble keeping up with them. Number two is that advertising is some big executive’s hyped idea that never worked in the first place. The truth, I propose, lies somewhere in the middle.

Many web designers focus just on the actual look and feel of a page and dismiss seemingly minor details like the page title. However, a good title can, in just a few words, tell your visitors what they can expect by reading your page. More importantly, the page title is the only way that many visitors will be able to identify and find your page. A good title can therefore increase the traffic to your site.

Google updates its entire database of Web sites about once a month. One area of search engine marketing that has changed dramatically over the years is submissions. Submitting to the search engines used to be so complicated, with having to choose between manual versus software submissions; only being able to submit so many pages a day; having to be careful about oversubmitting; and the list goes on.
Submissions used to be the worst part of the search engine optimization process, at least for me.

In my opinion reciprocal links are second only to search engines as a way to get traffic to ones site.
Reciprocal links are links with other sites, which are generally related to the theme of your website. The concept is simple you link to site, and that sites webmaster returns the favour and links back to your site. For some reason or another you always receive a lot more traffic from sites, then you give out.

Google is by far the most popular search engine available today for both ordinary surfers and webmasters.
Surfers like it because of the highly relevant results it gives, and the speed at which it delivers them. This is due to its complex text matching algorithm and of course the Pagerank™ system that this engine uses. More on the Pagerank™ system later.

What is Link Popularity?
Link popularity is a criterion that many search engines use when ranking web pages within their index. Simply put, most search engines give a ranking boost to sites that have incoming links from quality, related sites. This method of establishing importance, pioneered by the increasingly popular Google, is now used in some form by 19 of the top 20 search engines. While it is still possible to achieve high rankings for non-competitive terms without a great deal of link popularity, it is unlikely your site will rank well for very popular terms without it.

Year In Review
by Bob Osgoodby
The Christmas gifts that were wrapped with such care, are now just a memory - at least until the bills from the charge cards arrive - and a New Year is upon us. No, this will not be an anthology of events, but rather some impressions.
The year started off with dire warnings about viruses that would "eat our hard drive" and turn our computers into a pile of worthless scrap metal. While some were real threats, the majority fell into the hoax variety, intended to scare the computer newbies, who immediately passed them on without checking to see if they were real.

More and more search engines rank your web pages based on the number of links that point to your web site (link popularity). Google uses link popularity as its most important factor in ranking sites. HotBot, AltaVista, MSN, Inktomi, and others also use link popularity in their formulas.
In the near future every major search engine will use link popularity, so developing and maintaining it are essential to the success of your business.
