Comment: Perhaps when they all ( including the USA, Btw ) once again can see for a while that supposed cause, supposed religion, torture and persecution have NOTHING to do with either allah or christ, and that revenge (including the USA, Btw ) and arrogance have Nothing to do with either allah or christ,
THEN things will start to get better.

Comment: I think that the artical was very informative. And I think Sami did a good job in writing every descriptive detail and keeping the reader in empathy and on the same page as the reporter. Ohhh yeah to those that felt disgusted by what the reporter wrote or how he reacted. It's easy to say you would play super cop or Marine hero from the comfort of your home as you shovel McDonalds in your mouth or sip your Starbucks. But in real life verses your surreal daydreams and week late reactions you would of probely screamed and passed out or had a bowel movement all over yourself because officer with the AK47 and the looks the the other armed men would of made you feel, just by consciencious behavior that you could of easily been that target. So while your discussing this artical with your co-workers, kinship or next to kin. Rember this you wasn't there Sami was (without arms), while you was daydreaming and listening to Bush, believing the drunking nonsense that comes out of his mouth. That reporter searched for the truth something your too blind to do. Or never could do because that would take to much time out of your meaningless schedule.

Sami Y. I thought the artical was beautiful descriptive and very well wrote. I felt your emotion and saw the things that you seen by your writing. Keep up the good work.

Okay to the critic's answer these questions.

    1. If we are not there to liberate Afganistain because if we was we would have left by now , why are we really there?

    2. How come with all the so- called War on Terrorism these wars take place in fuel rich countries?

    3. Why are we fighting anybody other than Saudi Arabia. ( The men the flew the planes into WTC were Saudis.)

4 . Why are we in Iraq if Saddam didn't have WMD's and why do we only sanction, fight, dictate, rob and police Muslim countries ?
    Please answer.

Comment: Fat Joey..Why would the feydayeen stage a phone call? Who was there for the officer to impress? See I think thats the problem with Americans today they are so quick to think that everybody thinks or should think like them. When the majority of the world don't pretend when it comes to their belifes. I think that the artical was beautiful, scary for the reporter but beautiful for the believer. Afganistan has a history of defending their belifes even against the mightiest of armys. " Remember they're the reason the Cold War ended." Somebody may of gave them some weapons (Stingers) but AllahSWT gave them heart, faith, and patience.

Sami Yousafzai I think your report was beautiful keep up the good work.

Comment: To the person who was disgusted by the journalists lack of response or action to stop the bombers...what would you have done? You are unarmed in a small dwelling with three men who are wearing explosive vests...Who can you call? There is no 911 or swat team readily available. Unfortunately, this journalist had no choice. He attempted to get a story from these men that could have given insight to the methods used to recruit suicide bombers, he could have asked the question we all want to ask...Why?
Even if he had walked the hour and driven the rest of the way to civilization, what could he tell authorities? Three guys wearing turban like scarves ran out to the desert wearing bombs....talk about a needle in a haystack. Had he tried anything, he most likely would have been killed and then they would have left anyway. His story never to be told. Future stories would be silenced. What good would that accomplish? We do not know his situation or his entire story. How could we convict him of murder without more compelling evidence? In this wonderful country, we are allowed a trial by jury, we are allowed to defend ourselves and our actions before being judged. That is one of those great freedoms that our country's men and women are out there defending.
Your husband is a brave man who works in a warzone. Everyday, he risks his life just by being there. Just as this journalist risked his life for the story. His job may not be as dangerous as your husband's, whatever it may be, but he still faces risk. If your husband is military or one of the many law enforcement personnel there to help train local officials, my thanks to him for his job. My prayers are with you for your sacrifice being away from him. Worry for his safety must be difficult. I pray he returns safely and soon to you.

Comment: It seems to me that this meeting was pre-arranged, the Taliban did not just grab him and tell him to write an atricle. The journalist could have informed the miltary or worn a tracking device. Journalists expect to be protected by the US Military yet they feel it is alright to interview someone planing to murder soliders. In America if I knew someone was going to murder you and I did nothing I could (and most likely would) be charged with a crime. How is this different?

    • Posted By: hollandsy @ 12/27/2007 23:35:47

Comment: I also found myself waiting for the rest of the story...too bad the journalist did not follow up more or ask more questions of those left behind. If he really faced three suicide bombers...I am hoping his story is true. For the sake and reputation of all the other journalists over there who are doing their jobs and taking risks to get the stories to send home.

Comment: I am disgusted by this story. My husband is currently in Ghazni and could have been murdered by this or any other bomber. In America this reporter would be an accessory to murder! How can you stand by knowing that the men you are with are going to murder innocent people and do nothing?!

Comment: Lemme get this straight. This reporter was offered the chance to meet some real-live-by-golly suicide bombers. At their meeting, there is an "urgent call", and the bombers strap up with belts that JUST HAPPENED to be hidden right there on the premises, and run off to perform their "deadly mission". before any real interview can take place. Later, the reporter learns they "hadn't found" their target.

I'm not buying it. I think this reporter got played.

  • Posted By: smilee @ 12/27/2007 9:42:29 AM

Comment: How heart-wrenching story is this. If I were the reporter, I would not keep my own job any more. What makes them do such a horrible act? What is God for them? The story only reminds me of my living a happy life right now.

Comment: Wow, what a POWERFUL idea JosephB has, and I mean that sincerely, in saying that these indiscriminate bombings of uninvolved civilians should be henceforth called "homicide bombings". Talk about the pen being mightier than the sword!! The term "suicide bomber" very unfairly emphasizes the bomber over his victims. Imagine the media using the new term every time they reported one of these. I'm blown away, truly. One can only hope! As far as the rest of what Joseph says, it needs to be remembered that Islam is not any more monolithic than the various types of Christianity. Our battles should be with the fascist, militant outcropings of Islam as they manifest themselves, not Islam as a whole.

    • Posted By: hollandsy @ 12/27/2007 23:23:10

Comment: I agree with your comment about our focus on the militant or the extremists instead of Islam as a whole. You dont put an entire family on trial because one of its members is a murderer. You dont put an entire town on trial because of the deeds of a few. I dont agree with every Christian I meet. Even Christianity has SO many branches. How can me justify turning against an entire religious group because of the actions of only a few?

  • Posted By: JosepBaileyOne @ 12/26/2007 10:02:41 PM

Comment: This short piece shows the reality of this issue that should be termed Homicid Bombings instead of suicide bombings. What are these human beings doing thinking that all there is to life is to kill, maim, and destroy? Why is it that no one can say that Islam itself is part of this problem because without Islam there would be no paradise of 70 virgins to inspire them to kill, maim, and destroy. This area of the world is as backwards as it gets and will stay that way for decades more due to the illiteracy, ignorance, and lack of desire to achieve and accomplish something productive in this world and their life. It may be that the time has come to evacuate all of those who want a better life and blockade those who want to stay and let them live in their 8th century dream world.

Comment: I don't doubt this writer;s veracity. I was a reporter for the Village Voice in Northern Ireland and visiting the home of an IRA supporter when I got to hear "the midnight knock," as British soldiers knocked on the door and came in and searched the place from top to bottom, weapons drawn. So these kinds of things happen. What I feel most is the writer's empathy for the three young lives that will be lost. I know he must have felt to see these young people, their eyes bright with their misguided beliefs and zeal, rushing off to their death. No one who is truly human can help but mourn the loss, even in the service of an evil - although not to them - cause. Young 21-year-old kids, ignorant, broke and far from their families, believing sincerely they will go to Paradise for killing others - it would make me very sad.

Comment: 3 minutes have passed. No falafal detonation. My cell phone rang. It was my mom. I don't see a connection. Falafal is overcooked and virtually inedible. That is a tragedy. Thank goodness I didn't sacrifice the gyros. Falafal made a popping noise once. I was a little scared. I am sure my moment of fright was similar to this journalists experience with the taliban...because I am sure he wrote his article from his couch. hahahhahaha.

Comment: I am no journalist, but seriously, the title was the most riveting thing about this. Here's my submission into Newsweek:

"I heard of the suicide bombers, but never actually met one nor have I been anywhere near the middle east. I have had falafel before. It was quite tastey. Maybe if I put the falafel in the microwave, it would explode like a peep! Then, I would have some expertise on Middle Eastern Bombing. Excellent. Give me approximately 3 minutes for this experiment and I will follow up with my "expert opinion."

There! Now I can write for Newsweek! Riveting, huh?

Comment: This story sounds more like Zionist propaganda than something that really happened. The mis-use of the word fedayeen is the most overt give away. Fedayeen is the word, we were told, Sadams "elite" militia used to call themselves. This thing sounds faked. Why are these people going to allow themselves to be interviewed by a western associated journalist. If they wanted media they would want it to be local or Arabic so that the could inspire others who believe in their cause.
Also, all those that called Islam a 'religion of death' need to get a bit of a clue about philosophy and religion. Islamic nations have the highest birth rates.Despite all the distruction in Afghanistan for intance they still have a rapidly growing population. Western nations like Spain, Italy, Germany, etc.. have much higher living standards and have been at peace since 1946 have negative birthrates.Islamic governments do not allow abortion of healthy infants just becuase they inconvience the mother. They don't promote casual sex and allow open homosexuality two other life robbing practices. Because someone is willing to die for their cause does not mean they embrace death. It means that they have a moral code which justifies their taking of other lives and the sacrific of their own to acheive a greater "good". Natuarally most modern westerners don't think of Islams moral code as "good", but that does not make it anymore or less valid as a spiritual or philosophical path. Christianity is more of a death religion than Islam. Its founder is praised for dieing for sins and it is as dedicated to the afterlife as Islam. Also Christinity altuism and self sacrifice concepts are anti-darwinian and do not make a people or nation stronger or more powerful rather more weak and docile.
Western nations need to return to their pre-christian roots to finds the will to power, which is equivalent to the will to life. Life is power ,will and struggle. Death is weakness, passiveness and complacency. If the west dies and Islam thrives it will be because the west will be lead to its death by the judeo inspired falicies of egalitarianism and pacifism.

Comment: islam as a religion equates violence.the funny thing is that westerners think that america got them selfes in trouble because they went into iraq or for that matter afghanistan.that thought could not be far from the truth.as a nigerian christian, i can only say one thing , this islamist death squads have killed more christian from afica and in africa than the will ever americans.the other worrying thing is that either out of fear of arabs or just lack of will most westerners think somehow the threat emanating from islam will disappear.the truth is that with time this treat will grow and grow and eventually will bring about major wars somewhere in the west.islam as a religion can not be placated and lets you forget kosovo was a part or serbia years back before the muslims came there , i for see something similar happening somewhere in the heart of europe in the not too distant future. udoka

Comment: "Suicide Killers???, A French Documentary about Islam and the worship of death. A must see for those who are looking to write articles on the subject. It is important to understand how world religions contrast and their unique ways of building a following. Violence is a very powerful tool, used by many Right Wing political groups like the SS, the Nationalist in Spain and Italy also with the Left wing political groups such as the Communists??? in Russia, China, Africa and South America. Just as these political religious movements use violence to achieve there ends so does mythical or spiritual religious movements such as Islam, Hinduism and of course Christianity. Perhaps the biggest difference with all the other -isams compared to Mohamid-isam is that in Islam life is not valued at all not even your own. It is something that is to be suffered and endured not lived and loved. The people that fall into the claws of this dark world view suffer terrible lives of misery imposed on them my tyrants and thugs . The only thing they have to ease their lives of terrible torment is the delusion that by dying in a glorious way carrying out the political agenda of their masters, their Imams, their suffering will stop and they will find all the joy that has been denied them in life. If you want this to stop then stop funding their Masters do not buy their oil do not by their products, do not sell them weapons. It is your money your greed that is providing the tools for this terrible situation. Stop doing it. For if you do not one day you will meet them face to face and that will be a very sad day for those of us that love life not death.

Comment: I am left scratching my head about the reporter's explanation of the term fedayeen. I am not aware of any context in Arabic or its dialects, nor of any lexicon which borrows Arabic culturally, in which this word would have the meaning referenced in this story.

Comment: richardSC, you need to wake up to the bitter, horrifying fact that this is not "america" anymore. maybe there are others in the world who want to destroy us, but the folks in power here now are doing a much better job than the terrorists...if you think there is any regard for freedom or justice in the White House, then you are sadly deceived...maybe your illusions are comforting to you. i wish i still had such illusions...

Comment: If you want learning more about the mentality of the Moslem radical, then visit the web site Azureus Views where may be downloaded videos like "Gun Market in Pakistan" which reveals just how apt these people are at creating destruction. There are many free video files at Azureus regarding the Middle East, and which seldom does the American news media reveal. These people have a love for death and cannot get there quickly enough in their desires to destroy the so call infidels. We have a president who is attempting to offer an olive branch to those that desire most to rid the world of us, and having a religion that honor death and destruction. The western world had best to awaken to the absolute truth about Islam and it the need to either contain or destroy it. We are the infidel to them, and they have the right to destroy us, and will do so if having the opportunity. Its that simple, but our government and most the news media refuse to recognize it.

Comment: I'm sorry, but this reporter's mistranslation of the word fedayeen, among other things, leads me to believe that he has no idea what he's doing, and that what he witnessed was something staged for his benefit. Maybe next time you could send a reporter fluent in the relevant languages and a little bit street-smart!

Three suicide bombers in the middle of nowhere get a phone call and can't find anything to blow up? Please, there must have been a dog , gopher or playground full of kids they could have taken out somewhere. next time print the article when you have something noteworthy.

As they left for their mission and their figures grew smaller on the horizon, a sudden orange flash appeared and they were no more. A last call from their Imam wishing great success accidentally detonated their vests. Most unfortunately, their body parts were strewn about in a nearby pig farm.

If the only delivery system has two feet, maybe we should pay a little attention as this one day will be us, against our own well armed military, and "We the People" will only have what's on our backs or strapped to ourselves! After all Bush is still president and the self serving GOP is still in power! How they weild it it the question for the ages, but trust no one, at least not one of them! Comment: George Bush, as goofy as he may be, had no hand in this event. But I agree that we shouldn't be arming any Arab nation. Let them arm themselves. However the flip side of that says: Let Russia arm them. I'm not too happy with that alternative. Russia will arm IRAN, and Iran will arm any extremist country, or any anti-American country for that matter. As far as arms go, how would you handle arms. Is there really a safe alternative?

Comment: As a journalism student, I am learning the most powerful stories are the ones that capture a moment. Real journalists aren't shooting for length, they're shooting to tell the truth. The fact that Yousafzai did not include quotes does raise questions about the validity of this story, but sometimes quotes aren't necessary to convey, or may even get in the way of, the point. Yousafzai's life was indeed in danger; however, maybe he felt going into too much detail soiled the story. Think about getting the silent treatment from your significant other, or a "no comment" response from a stubborn source: silence can be just as powerful as words.
