(CBS) The CBS News Internship Program is an educational program designed for students interested in pursuing a career in Journalism, Broadcasting or Communication.

Please read the following for more information:

Departments:
Students do not choose a show or department. Placement is at the sole discretion of the Coordinator. Each student is selected and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of positions varies for each semester.

  • Internship Locations:
    New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, London, Tokyo, Beijing
    *Interns are responsible for housing & expenses.

    Sessions:
    SPRING: January to May
    The student arranges exact start and end date

    SUMMER: June to August
    Full time over the course of ten weeks

    FALL: September to December
    The student arranges exact start and end date

    Duties:
    Internship duties can include logging tapes, coordinating script, research, preliminary interviews, assisting during shoots, selecting footage, answering viewer mail, and clerical duties.

    Requirements:
    Students who are currently attending an accredited college and have achieved junior or senior status are eligible. A variety of majors qualify including Journalism, Broadcasting, Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, English, Political Science and more. Participants must have good computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities and knowledge of current events. A 3.0 GPA or above is recommended. Students must be able to meet the minimum time commitment.

    Compensation:
    This is an unpaid internship. Students are required to provide official documentation on school letterhead confirming that they will receive credit for the internship. This documentation must be on file prior to start date.

    Employment:
    Interns are not guaranteed a job after participating in the program.

    Application Status:
    Due to the high volume of applicants, the office cannot respond to application-status inquiries. The office reviews all submitted applications and contacts qualified candidates for a phone interview.

    Deadlines:
    Fall and spring applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. Summer deadline is 2/28 of each year. Application materials may be submitted at any time.

    Evening News: (NY & DC) This broadcast covers news reports, features and interviews by CBS News correspondents covering events throughout the world. Intern must have strong research and computer skills and knowledge of Lexis-Nexis. Must have the ability to work the phone with contacts and sources, affiliate calls and light clerical work.

    Investigative Unit: (NY & DC) This department produces hard-hitting, in-depth stories for the network's flagship broadcast, the CBS Evening News. Subjects covered include government waste, homeland security, terrorism, crime, health insurance, medical fraud, etc. Ideal candidates must be ambitious, enthusiastic, self-starters, and a good researcher. Previous newsroom or journalism experience a plus.

    60 Minutes: (NY & DC) CBS News magazine with investigative reports and features focusing on people and events in the news and behind the headlines. Intern must have a strong desire to work in news and strong research skills with knowledge of Lexis-Nexis.

    48 Hours: (NY) A CBS News magazine that goes behind the headlines to investigate - with cutting-edge style and journalistic integrity - baffling crimes, heartless scams and compelling real-life dramas. Intern must be organized, efficient with their time and aggressive. Computer skills and proficiency with Lexis-Nexis required. Strong interpersonal skills recommended.

    The Early Show (NY & DC) A hard-news broadcast with breaking news reports and regular feature segments that cover business and personal finance, consumer affairs, entertainment, home improvement, lifestyle and health. Intern must be organized and have strong interpersonal skills. Computer skills helpful.

    Up to the Minute: (NY) Overnight newscast every half-hour, combined with newsmaker and topical feature interviews, sports, weather, entertainment and features.

    Face the Nation: (DC) In this weekly national affairs broadcast, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer interviews the principal newsmaker(s) of the week. Interns assist with gathering research and videotape and works with producers in the control room on the day of air. Candidates should be well organized, efficient, and have good editorial judgment.

    Web site: (NY) This department is responsible for production of the CBSNews.com Web site. Students should have an interest in online journalism, Web design, or Web development. HTML, news writing, and/or Adobe Photoshop experience a plus. Journalism students will assist in writing and producing stories. Design students will assist in graphic design for the site.


    Mobile News: (NY)
    This unit produces original video content for mobile phones, including a mix of anchored mini-newscasts and field reports. Interns will have the opportunity to report and produce their own segments. Students with non-linear editing experience and camera shooting skills are a big plus. This is a small unit, so self-motivation is essential.


    Newspath: (NY & DC) This unit is responsible for feeding footage to CBS stations & affiliates including national & international news, weather, sports, medicine and health reports, business and consumer news and a broad range of feature stories from around the world. Intern should have strong written and oral communication skills.


    News Productions: (NY) The production company within CBS News that creates and distributes a diverse mix of original nonfiction and reality-style programming for domestic and international markets, including network and cable television, home video, DVD, audio books and in-flight, as well as schools and libraries. CBS News Productions and CBS Eye Too Productions produce programs across a wide spectrum of genres, from history to science to entertainment. Interns conduct research and do production work. Student must have computer skills & strong interpersonal skills.

    CBS News on Logo: (NY) News for MTV's cable channel for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community. CBS News on Logo interns write, produce, edit and use electronic newsgathering equipment. Strong writing skills a must. Knowledge of the LGBT community preferred.

    Promotion: (NY) This unit produces promos for all news broadcasts, including television, radio, print promos and affiliate sales tapes. Interns must be interested in television and production.

    Broadcast Marketing: (NY) This unit deals with all of the CBS News broadcasts and acts as a liaison between CBS News and all CBS affiliates. An intern assigned to this unit must have a great phone manner and be able to juggle several projects at one time. The ideal candidate must be interested in marketing, production and have some sales ability. Depending on skills, an intern will have an opportunity to learn how to book and produce satellite tours and edit excerpts and promos for affiliate use on our Avid. At the same time the candidate must be a self-starter, patient, capable of handling various clerical assignments and must enjoy being a team player. There is a certain amount of typing, research and photocopying. The Intern should have skills in marketing, enjoy writing and not be adverse to pitching in where needed.

    Press Office: (NY) The press office serves as the liaison between CBS News broadcasts/talent and the media. The department consists of a vice president and publicists who are responsible for publicizing each of the national news broadcasts. An internship with the press office is an opportunity to experience public relations in a fast-paced, professional environment. Intern must be well organized, have computer experience, and excellent written and oral communication skills.

    Political Unit: (NY & DC) This unit covers presidential and congressional campaigns for all of CBS News (radio, TV and the Web). Interns assist with research, logging tapes, covering political events in NY and DC and other clerical duties. Interns must have strong research and computer skills and knowledge of Lexis-Nexis. Political Science majors or minors / past political internships are a plus.

    Evening News Weekend Edition: (NY & DC) This broadcast features reports and interviews by CBS News correspondents covering events, trends, and issues around the world. Interns must have a strong self-motivated desire to be part of that news team and be willing to contribute to the final product. After demonstrating their journalistic talents, interns will be given a chance to co-produce stories for the broadcast. Common sense is required; strong research and phone skills are necessary for success in the internship and afterwards.

    Sunday Morning: (NY) A broadcast reviewing events of the preceding week, celebrating human accomplishments and achievements and journeying through the world of fine art, music, nature, sports, science and Americana. Student should be organized, have strong interpersonal skills and basic computer knowledge.

    Radio News: (NY & DC) CBS Radio is America's news leader, serving radio stations with hourly newscasts, instant coverage of breaking stories, special reports, updates, features, customized reports and news feed material. Every day, millions of Americans rely on CBS Radio News for up-to-the-minute information. Interests in broadcast journalism, especially radio, a must. Intern should have basic knowledge of computers, be self-starters and also have fundamental concept of reporting and research.

    Legal Unit: (NY) CBS News covers a wide range of stories that touch on all areas of the law. This unit extensively covers trials, legal trends and rulings by the Supreme Court. The Early Show and The Evening News are daily shows that cover breaking legal stories. Interns will also provide information to radio and the web. Intern should have a legal background, ability to multi-task, interest in broadcast journalism and good writing skills. Responsibilities include researching story ideas, helping find characters and attorney information and getting involved in story production.

    Atlanta/Miami/Los Angeles Bureaus: These bureaus cover news stories in the southeast and west coast regions of the U.S. Intern duties include assisting producers and correspondents for Evening News, Early Show, Weekend News, Sunday Morning and other CBS News programs. Interns will do research, help set up stories, log tape, attend press conferences and do other various tasks. The ideal candidate must be a good researcher, a self-starter, ambitious and have good writing and verbal communication skills.

    London Bureau: This is the CBS Broadcast Center in Europe, which is the hub of all international coverage for CBS News broadcasts. Intern duties include accompanying camera crews into the field for interviews, breaking news and research. Interns are expected to monitor local news programming in London and to assist producers and correspondents in compiling research for stories for the CBS Evening News, Weekend News, Early Show and Sunday Morning programs. A keen sense of international news is essential, as is a good sense of humor. Intern must have the ability to work under pressure during breaking news stories.

    Beijing/Tokyo Bureaus: These bureaus cover news stories in that region. Intern duties include research, logging tapes, translating/transcribing video, light clerical work, pitching story ideas and working with producers, correspondents and crews. Tokyo students must be fluent in Japanese; some Mandarin language skills are helpful for Beijing. Strong candidates who do not speak Chinese will be considered. All students must have good written and verbal communication skills and basic knowledge of computer programs like Word and Excel.
