November 9 Alleged death of a detained individual during combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq (Operation Phantom Fury)
   
2006
November 19 Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) begins investigation into alleged incident.                    
   
2007
August 16 Jose Luis Nazario is arraigned by U.S. Attorneys in Riverside, CA for alleged death of a detained individuals during combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq in November 2004. Nazario was a Marine Sergeant and squad leader during Operation Phantom Fury in November 2004.  He is no longer serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and does not fall under military jurisdiction.
August 20 Charges preferred against Sgt. Jermaine A. Nelson by 1st Marine Division for his alleged unlawful murder of an unknown foreign national in Fallujah, Iraq on November 9, 2004
August 24 Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command (MARCENT) is designated as the new consolidated disposition authority for cases resulting from the alleged incident.
September 12 Charges against Sgt Nelson are dismissed by Commander, MARCENT to further evaluate the ongoing Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation and determine appropriate action.
December 6 Charges of murder and dereliction of duty preferred against Sgt Nelson for alleged death of a detained individual during combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq in November 2004.
