North Hope river bridge piers 1989

This is a view from above the tunnel of the piers of the northern bridge across the Hope river. The design of the piers shows that they were skewed relative to the bridge girders, rather than being at right angles. This suggests the piers were designed to offer minimum flow resistance in the river channel. The walkway on exiting the tunnel climbs above the tunnel from which this picture was taken.
