Has Anyone NOT Signed Up For The Warhammer Online Beta?
Look, an MMO based on Warhammer was always going to be popular. Not as popular as one based on 40K, but hey, still pretty popular. But this popular? You're all getting carried away, and you'll regret it come morning. EA have announced that 500,000 people have signed up for Warhammer Online's beta program. Reminder: this is just a beta.
WARHAMMER® ONLINE'S BETA ARMY NOW HALF A MILLION STRONG AND GROWINGMore Than 500,000 Sign Up for Early Access to EA Mythic's MMORPG Scheduled for Release in Calendar Q2 2008
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Dec. 13 2007 - Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR), the highly anticipated massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from EA Mythic, has surpassed 500,000 closed beta registrants in North America and Europe. Beta testing resumes next week with a special sneak peek at the new Dark Elf lands and careers. Thanks to the tremendous response from fans around the world, the development team has a strong pool of gamers to engage in WAR's final tuning stages.
"It's fantastic that over half a million players want to help us with the development of WAR," said Mark Jacobs, VP and General Manager of EA Mythic. "Their feedback will help us take WAR to the next level as we focus on refining game play, adding polish, and most importantly, making sure the game is extremely fun. We can't wait to let them all into the living, breathing Warhammer universe that we're creating."
Poised to be one of the biggest new MMORPG releases of next year, WAR is slated for official launch in Q2 of calendar year 2008. The Beta Center is still open and accepting recruits at: https://betacenter.eamythic.com/signup.php.
Based on Games Workshop's epic and longstanding tabletop fantasy war game, Warhammer Online features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm™ (RvR) game play that immerses players in a world of perpetual conflict. For more information, please visit www.warhammeronline.com.

In reply to the title... I haven't!
MMORPG's aren't to my tastes, unless they have cuteness injected up to the eyeballs like Ragnarok which is a series I have dabbled with in the past.
i think people are getting a bit tired of WoW, and Warhammer online seems to be almost a carbon copy, so it's easy to switch over too.
Myself im looking forward to age of conan instead.
Here here on the Age of Conan. I can't wait for that game, of course it was supposed to be out over a year ago, but as long as it's great when it hits I'll forgive it.
I haven't. My PC can barely run solitaire so how would I expect it to run this?
What Tajfoon said. I think WoW brought a lot of people into the MMO genre who hadn't played that kind of game before and are getting hungry to try something new.
I signed up last summer when the registrations opened. The thought of a WoW clone with heavy focus on PvP and realm combat just pleases me to no end. After they shut down the first Beta I was a bit concerned but it sounds like they're still working hard to get into the next Beta and really polish the game.
It could still end up being a piece of crap, but I'm going for the "cautious optimism" path.
"More like World of Warhammer.
Online.
Craft."
Oh, my god. I got half way through the process, and stopped when I saw it was going to check my hardware specs (I was upgrading my computer literally a week later.)
WoW has had it's time in the sun. I think a large number of WOW players, both current and former, are ready for a new drug.
Personally, I'm just hoping the game stays fairly true to the glimpses they've given us so far. Artistically, the game isn't anything new, but it looks good enough. Mechanically, however, the game strives to be as 'grind free' as possible, making each mission (even random ones) unique and interesting, and making PVP and RVR combat much more accessable for players of all levels and styles.
I'm really looking forward to this one. In the meantime, I'll continue to get my semiregular MMO fix from DDO. That's a damn good game, in my opinion. Not as robust, perhaps, as other offerings, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun to do a dungeon crawl with a group of friends.
@BD: You know they're selling hoodies with that next line, now? Tres goth.
I only hope this will be multiplatform, so I will reform my old Warhammer group, this time without worrying about distance...
I've never understood the point of Warhammer. Nor have I ever understood the point of MMORPGs.
Regardless to say, I think I'll give this one a miss.
I have not! No time, no cares, no problem! Besides, played MMOs a lot back in the day. Same shit, different tweaks and "rules."
@tajfoon: dont know what game you are talking about but from what I have seen it is far from a carbon copy of wow. I supposed if you just heard the name and saw a screen shot or two you could have a point but if you actually look at what end game in Warhammer then you would see its far from a carbon copy. I am just worried it will be too much like DAOC
I signed up ages ago. I still have the "Newsletter Veteran" status on my beta info page.
Wait, didn't they shut down Beta Invites anyhow?
Really looking forward to this. I defy anyone to watch the production podcasts and not be impressed. Blizzard will rue the day they stole half their Warcraft shtick from GW! *waves axe around menacingly*
Put me likewise into the AoC camp.
Dont get me wrong, I LOVED Warhammer back in the day when it was an actual RPG; but I just dont see what I loved about it then translating well into a MMORPG. Plus...its all been done before :(
Now 40K as a MMORPG....hmmmmm THAT might have been something.
Still waiting... always waiting...
Let me in!!
Signed up ages ago, doubt i'll get in with that many signed up.
@Rotek: Your little dudes (possibly dudettes, but very rarely) wage randomly-determined-outcome war against other little dude/ttes. Aside from the difficulty of teabagging with a model on a plastic base, what's not to love?
Still, I didn't sign up. Don't plan to either, until a 40k version comes out. Even then... meh. There's no allure without of possibility of rolling 6's and watching your unharmed enemy disappear in a blaze of fire - alternately watching your opponent roll 1's and disappearing in a blaze of fire.
@mrbandersnatch: Well, if this one does well...
Signed up ages ago
I didn't sign up. I'd be hard to convince to play another time-sucking MMORPG, and the start up cost for an army and time required to paint a figure (what? why would I want to do that? I just want to play some games!) have made me loathe everything about Warhammer, as well as Gamer's Workshop.
@Automageddon:
Your hoping for a western MMORPG to go on consoles? Lol, good luck.
I don't like mmo's.
I haven't. I figured I would answer your question, and there it is.
I haven't. Even if your question was rhetorical and/or sarcastic.
Not the biggest fan of MMO's but Age Of Conan is on my wish list as well. Still intrigued by Huxley if that MMOrpg/fps ever gets done.
The problems of creating a Warhammer 40,000 MMORPG have been well documented, maybe an MMORTSRPG (Woo, letters) might work, with players able to gain reputation and build squads with personalized paint schemes. They could then deploy their unit into one of their faction's warzones, earning experience and more reputation to recruit new members and procure new equipment. The problem of course would be how to unify your faction to the complete your objectives, but heck I'm just tossing an idea out there.
40K has never been the setting for Space Marines wandering around smacking Tyranids and skinning them so they can level up their leatherworking to make gold for that epic mount. Although Squiggoths would be pretty awesome as mounts.
"So what are we going to call the game?"
"Warhammer Online makes the most sense."
"Hmm...that is true, but...well, when you say the acronym of that it is WO. And that sounds like 'whoa'. We don't want to have our brand associated with Joey Lawrence."
"WO really isn't that bad."
"Oh come on Steven, think about it for a second. We are competing with WOW. What do you say when you just got a great blowjob? 'WOW'. What do you say when you just found out that the person that gave you that blowjob was actually a transvestite? 'Whoa'. See my point Steven?"
"I guess so...but is that really an appropriate metaphor for a board meeting? At the sexual harassment seminar last week they said that creating a hostile environment is the same as.."
"Steven, the only hostile environment we are going to have is if we do not come up with a badass acronym for this game! A bad acronym can ruin a game. Think about it. DDR. That sounds cool. FF, double F's for Fucking Fantastic acronym. MGS, which is perfect if only because it is not MS in which case everyone would think of sick children while snapping people's necks with Snake. That would be a shitty acronym."
"I think you may be taking this a little too far.."
"Oh really? Answer me this; why is the PS3 failing?"
"A poor selection of exclusive titles and a high entry level price point, as well as..."
"NO STEVEN! They do not have any sweet ass acronym games yet, that is the problem. Heavenly Sword? HS. HS makes you think of high school. Gamers don't like high school. Lair. One word, that means it fails, along with Folklore. Now look at the 360. They just had Mass Effect come out. ME. What is a better acronym for an RPG than 'me'?"
"But what about BioShock."
"BS, seems a little weird yes. But you see, it is actually just self referential humor aimed at the shitty ending to the game."
"That actually makes a lot of sense."
"Doesn't it? Anyway, I think the obvious thing to do is to pick an acronym, and then make up a name. Any suggestions?"
"How about WAR. I mean, it is called WARhammer."
"Steven, that is inspired thinking. Fan-fuckin-tastic. OK boys, this meeting is over. Come back same time tomorrow with some names that fit WAR. It doesn't really matter if they make sense or not, we are talking about a fantasy RPG here, we can make anything make sense"
Fin.
Not I, tho many times there is a small in game bonus for beta players i just don't have time for MMorpgs.
all of these mmo's will never do any good primarily because they all have a subscription fee. The only mmo that will take wow's place is going to be blizzard's next mmo.
The only next mmo that will do any good is Guild Wars 2 at this moment.
It's also probably worth mentioning that I don't think WoW is slowing down any time soon considering they've achieved 9.3million active subscribers from 7 million about this time last year if im correct. Have various commercials, merchandise, advertising.
Warrhammer may be good, but its too bad the genre is being totally dominated at the moment.
Beta= "I'll play for a bit when it's free and then drop it"
I have wrote this game off, it keeps getting delayed and delayed. It had promises at one time..
When it was on the drawing board.
@KidU: Lawl. But not a bad idea at all. WAR is such a fitting acronym for Warhammer.
Remember, Blizzard ripped off GW first. This I expect GW to make a much, much better setting. Seriously, Warhammer has some of the finest pitch black humour this side of Discworld.
40k wouldn't really work as an MMO, but it's fun to dream... dream of eternal war, the galaxy burning, and the laughter of thirsting gods...
I signed up but I'm not sure I can be bothered after I got a taste of the game at gamesday. At the time it seemed a little slow and clunky, with a good deal of delay between actions. Also their version of a battleground was pretty boring and uninspired. In a nutshell you had to hold the middle of the map, and not really do much else. Also Alliance (Order) always won and as a Horde (Chaos) player that made me sad.
So how do I nominate Kidu for the awesome poster of the week thread?
Warhammer won't "replace" WoW.. Though with NA subscribers it may come close. I'm doubting it'll hold the numbers for very long considering it's weak points.
Age of Conan will no doubt do well too. I'll be giving that one a spin. But ultimately I'm excited about what BioWare is cooking. Star Trek Online will also get my CC#, but not exactly liking what I've seen so far.
Can't wait to get back into a good MMO though.. About the only place you can find good hardcore gamers.
Has anyone ever considered a "World of Ashcraft" title?
I am subscribed. But I am planning to subscribe my mother, my father, my two sister and my dog. My brother is already subscribed already.
I am somewhat angry that I can't re-subscribe more. I am re-subcribed because my guild is subscribed, hence, is another subscribed way. But I want to resubscribe to update the hardware. I have now a 8800GPU, and seems people with huge machines are first.
@tei:
It would be crappy if they only let in people in huge machines first though. They should let in an eclectic group of players with a broad spectrum of rigs in order to iron out the bugs in the game faster.
Not everyone who wants to play the game can upgrade right away. By optimizing it to work on a broad range of rigs, they can draw more people into playing the game. I think this is one of the reasons why WoW is so successful. You can have a pretty crappy rig and still play WoW at a decent level.
@tajfoon: As a matter of fact WoW is already a carbon copy of the Warhammer fantasy rpg universe.
Stomach cancer treatment information is vital to the person afflicted. Stomach cancer, also referred to as gastric cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the lining of the stomach.
What's warhammer?
yeah, sure WoW copied the Warhammer universe, but from what i have seen from movies and screenshots and whatnot the gameplay in WAR seem eerily similar to WoW, minus the grinding part maybe. and the graphics are really similar too.
I don't know, it just looks like a slightly darker WoW to me. Nothing wrong with that though.
@KidU: *applauds* that was absolute gold ^_^
@BD: If you say -anything- else (word ONE) I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its destination I will topple the master of the dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of blood and bone, and fueled for my hatred of you the FEAR ENGINE will bore a hole from that world to this one.
When it begins you will hear the sound of children screaming, as if from a great distance. A smoking orb of NOTHING will form above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch but a glimpse of my radience before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face....my dark work can begin.
I will open one of my six mouths and sing the song that ends the earth.
(thanks be to PA for that hilarious excerpt, but seriously...dont say WAR is like WoW or bad horrible things may happen.)
If any game has a shot at stealing WoW's thunder, it's WAR. If they have 500,000 people signed up just to try the game out in Beta, how many more will they get to pay for it once the game is actually released? There are MMOs that are struggling to keep a 500,000 player base right now, and EA Mythic has that same number practically eating out of their hand.
I, for one, welcome our new overlords of WAR. ...I can't wait to play a HE Archmage.
Why would I trust the same studio that so ham-handedly screwed up their golden goose in Dark Age of Camelot?
In 5+ years they couldn't bring reasonable balance in PVP or fix their raving stark obvious broken classes... why would I expect any different in Warhammer?
They will reap what they have sown in reputation.
It looks neat, but I'm hoping to get my fantasy fix with the Conan MMO. Now if it was Warhammer 40k Online, I'd be all over it like a pedo in a playground...
me. i have zero interest in it.
Warhammer has been receiving a lot more attention here than Age of Conan lately... They had this really nice pure in-game trailer last week which wasn't posted, yet random concept art from WAR makes it here. I can't remember the last time I've actually seen an in-game shot of WAR instead of the CG trailer or concept art.
I'm not really interested in the game, so I didn't sign up for beta to take it from some person who really wanted it. None of the people I know in the gamer community are particularly impressed with it either. Yet it will be popular with the masses despite being unrevolutionary, like WoW.
I have. Where else am I going to get my dwarf-on-ork action?
@HeyApples: must've been tolerable if you played it for 5+ years :\
I signed up and still have no beta key after all this time :(
I want to get orky
*** Pro-TIP ***
Everybody and my dog will get the evil side, has everybody know Evil is more fun. On a PvP game is better to play in the smaller side, because that way, there will be much more people to kill, and tons of these will be noobs. Get the "Good guys" side, If you can.
*** Pro-TIP ***
@Sabre_Justice: I think it would work as an MMO. Have you ever played the 40K spin-off game Inquisitor? Or, at least read the rule book? It's basically an PnP RPG with miniatures that shows how much is going on in 40K BESIDES the grim darkness of war in the future.
In my thinking the only possible way to pull of a 40K MMORPG. There is a 40K MMO in the works, btw. It's just not clear what kind of an MMO it'll be. Maybe it's an MMORTS.
I'm in the beta. =) I'm in every beta, and that hurts my wallet when some aren't betas anymore. =(
@tei: That soooooo wasn't the case with WOW when I was playing
THQ are currently working on a Warhammer 40K mmo. If i ends up as good as Dawn of War, it will crush any other MMO out there, if it ends up as good as Fire Warrior, it will fail miserably.
@Yahto: That's really strange: none of the people I know in the gamer community are interested in Age of Conan. It very well could just boil down to personal preference.
I haven't.
Adding to that; WHY DON'T PEOPLE FUCKING TELL ME THESE THINGS?! D:
WAAAAGHH!!! Dis ork hery want bash sum dorf skul!
I won a beta invite in a drawing at PAX in August.
I'm still waiting for said beta invite. It's funny that when you read the fine print on the card they give you they specifically note that it increases your liklihood of getting into beta, but that it's not actually a beta invite.
I've never been big on the series, and NEVER got into Warhammer classic...
I'd check out a Necromunda online if it wasn't RTS style...
It may be a beta, but it's also FREE if you happen to get in, and that's about as much money as I'm willing to shell out for this thing unless it turns out to be way better than I'm expecting.
@mrbandersnatch:
It has always been said long ago that the 40K MMO is in the works.
I have a feeling most of you who are anticipating the launch of AoC will be very disappointed. As far as the beta goes, it's just fucking terrible.
Warhammer though, i'm cautiously optimistic, even though the fuckers haven't accepeted my beta app yet.
I'm a GW/LotRO player at the moment and I'll probably stay that way until the next Blizzard MMO or GW2 comes out, so I'm out. I did sign up though...haha.
@Aurvant: Warhammer (the game) is a copy cat of WoW. :) Fin.
Like others have said, im looking for a new concept idono maybe age of conan. I'm tired of wow clones. Dont argue with me i know a clone when i see one. >.>
doesn't look like it's for me. Besides, my computer can't handle it anyways. 2.8ghz Celeron; FX 5700LE
Just signed up :)
@NotSoCool: Way to troll you uninformed git. WAR is very dissimilar from WoW and in fact much of what you'll find in WoW was inspired by WAR, which was inspired by LoTR.
WoW is a PvE raid-grind with hints of bandaid PvP. WAR's main focus is RvR (realm vs. realm PvP). Even the PvE contributes to the overall war effort for your realm.
They may share some similarities but overall, they're vastly different in scope.
is this something i should care about? **shrugs** i think i'll keep playing my FFXI.
Warcraft is based on Warhammer, which is why both games look very similar. Does that mean WAR is going to be a WoW clone? Far from it! All you need to do is a little research on how the game actually plays.
Also, any experience at a Games Day convention is subject to change. There's a reason why MMO's need beta testing.
I'm not asking to like the game or even care about it. It's just foolish to completely dismiss a game based on early beta game play and because it looks like a WoW clone, when in fact it's game play is VASTLY different than WoW.
@Tizlor: Well since you said that, I'm assuming you're in beta. If it's that bad, you should give me your account so I can see for myself. :P
As much as I love Warhammer and 40k, I'm going to avoid this one.
It looks like it will be an absolutely awesome game that will be ruined by hordes of illiterate social deviant kiddies. Just like every other MMO and online game I seem to end up liking.
@tajfoon: wow are you crazy? the graphics look nothing like WoW. Even the art design is compeltely diffrent look at a dwarf armor in Warhammer then look at a tier 3 or 4 dwarf in WoW and try to say they look alike.
On the Horde side of things, even the really dedicated players in WoW don't like how "kiddy" the world/game is. We want something darker, and less "amount of time you log in" orientated and more skill based. The idea of the outcomes of battles/ actions of players affecting the reality on the server sounds cool too.
