Jose Gonzalez going on a "green" tour, playing Plug Awards
Mute Records is proud to announce Jose Gonzalez' Green Tour of North America in the spring....in partnership with Reverb, a non-profit organization designed to educate and engage music fansand promote environmental sustainability. They work closely with artists to create earth-friendly events and tours. As part of the greening of Gonzalez' upcoming tour, his rider will include biodegradable catering products, and a reduction of plastic water bottles will be facilitated by providing his crew with re-usable water bottles to carry throughout the tour. In addition, Gonzalez and Reverb will calculate the CO2 footprint of the tour and neutralize emissions from venue energy use, ground transportation, flights and hotel accommodations by supporting clean renewable energy projects.I don't totally understand what they just said, but it sounds nice. Awareness is good, and it's probably better than NOT doing all that (whatever it is they're doing). There will be a 50 cent add on to general ticket purchases that will support Reverb's greening efforts. Pre-sale ticket purchasers via Ticketstoday.com will also have the option to add an additional 50 cents to Native Energy's CO2 Offset program. At the shows, fans will have the opportunity to purchase a custom Jose Gonzalez sticker, the money from which will be used to purchase carbon offsets generated fromtravel to/from the show.
As part of the green tour, Jose is playing NYC twice: Highline Ballroom on March 11th, and Brooklyn Masonic Temple the next day. AND, he is also playing a shorter set @ Terminal 5 on March 6th as part of the Plug Awards (DID YOU VOTE YET?). All tour dates below....

Alvin and The Chipmunks vs. Ratatouille - The Reckoning
A couple of days ago I wrote a summary of recent back and forth between Patton Oswalt, David Cross and the public at large. In Patton's final response he explains...
I doubt you remember this, but back in March of 2006 I was in New York, and ran into you at Rififi. I was wearing a suit, and without anyone asking about it or being the least bit interested (unlike you, I am in constant, panick-y worry about what people think of me), I explained, “I just came from the premiere of Failure To Launch.Miraculously, photographic evidence of this now infamous meeting has been uncovered....
THE LATEST: In true fairytale goodness, David's future self has since wrote David's present self a letter to round things out, and cool things off. It can be read in it entirity at David's site. Here's an excerpt...
Just don't sweat the small stuff is what I'm getting at here. Nobody really truly gives a shit about it. You're being more than a little vain if you think they do. And if they really, truly do care and you really truly care that they care, then you can drive down to Best Buy and hash it out with them in person (and don't forget to take a look at their screenplay that's almost finished. It's kind of like "Kill Bill" meets "Kill Bill Vol. 2 but waaaay radder). Also, just so you know, you and Patton will remain good friends. Although when Fox buys Pixar and makes "Alvin and The Chipmunks vs. Ratatouille - The Reckoning" things will get a little hairy for awhile. (No pun intended!!!!)-Klaus

Warner Music acquires Insound
The Alternative Distribution Alliance, an independent distributor owned by the Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG), has acquired Insound.com, the indie music lifestyle store, reports Billboard, for an undisclosed sum. The NYC-based site, founded in 19998, will allow ADA to use the Insound digital sales infrastructure as a back-end for its labels and indie accounts to open their own online download stores, the story says. Insoundstarting selling only physical products via mail-order, and in October 2006 it began selling albums in MP3 format for download as well.

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week
Of this week's music releases, I can most highly recommend the soundtrack to the film, Juno. Between the theatrical release of the film and this album, I am thrilled that the music of Kimya Dawson will reach a wider audience.
Other recommended releases this week include several Bangles reissues (including the wonderfully poppy All Over the Place), Marah's Angels of Destruction!, and Sia's Some People Have Real Problems.
What new releases you picking up this week? What can you recommend?

Trent Reznor enlightens us, Niggy Tardust sales
DOWNLOAD: Saul Williams - Niggy Tardust (MP3)
Trent Reznor published a letter on NIN.com with the results of giving people the choice to pay for Saul Williams' new record "The Inevitable Rise And Liberation of Niggy Tardust". He seems disappointed in the lack of people that paid for it, but he forgot four things (that I can think of).
- He says to "Keep in mind not one cent was spent on marketing this record." I can't prove him wrong, but I can prove I received a few Saul Williams press releases in my inbox. One of them led me to the MP3 linked at the top of this post.
- As Idolator also pointed out, his statement that "people knowing about this project must either be primarily Saul or NIN fans, as there was very little media coverage outside our direct influence", is totally wrong. Not only were press releases sent out (see #1), the release seemed to get a decent amount of post-In Rainbows press. (on the Internet at least)
- He compares the number of people that downloaded it with the number of people that paid for it. Fine, but you could also theorize that most of the people that didn't pay, only downloaded it BECAUSE it was free - out of curiosity, or for whatever reason (probably the ones who are part of the NIN fanbase).
- He also doesn't take into account at all, that maybe people just didn't like the album. Would album sales be as low if Pitchfork gave it a 9.9? Probably not.

BEAR IN HEAVEN - MP3s, an album & a show tonight
DOWNLOAD: Bear in Heaven - Bag of Bags (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Bear in Heaven - Werewolf (single edit) (MP3)
I came across Brooklyn bear band Bear in Heaven while browsing tonight's (Sunday, Jan 6) Mercury Lounge listing. So far I like what I hear. To put it in Pitchfork's terms,
it reminds me a bit of the early-1990s UK post-rock outfits Bark Psychosis and Disco Inferno.Or to quote the Onion AV Club, it's like a
functional mix of This Heat, '70s soft rock, early Genesis, and oddly, later Pink Floyd. (Think Animals through The Final Cut.) From a more modern perspective, songs like "Bag Of Bags," "Slow Gold," and "Fraternal Noon" point at Mercury Rev and Animal CollectiveOr to just put it more like Popmatters,
a mess, yes, but a magnificent oneSee their 1.5 year old La Blogoteque Take Away show @ Daily Motion. Pick up their album @ Insound. Check out the two MP3s on the top of this post. Check out their clever video flyer for tonight's show, below....

David, Patton, Theodore
by Klaus Kinski
So, David Cross (see what he liked in 2007) has a part in the recently released CGI/live action family movie Alvin and the Chipmunks. It didn't take long before message boards and blogs were alight with Cross fans (and people who think money grows on trees) crying 'sell out!'. Of course, this silly backlash on its own certainly didn't merit a defensive move by Cross. However, a few weeks ago, Patton Oswalt (see what he liked in 2007) published a characteristically funny and insightful myspace blog. Like most of his blogs, it was a good read and nothing within it struck me as particularly provocative, but to Cross this blog contained a stinger:
Oddly enough, both Brian Posehn and I were offered the part of Ian, the agent. We both threw the script across the room in disgust. David Cross caught it.Oh no he di'int!
These three sentences, coupled with a pre-existing backlash, provoked a whopping 5-part response from Cross which sets out to not only counter Patton, but to also address the petty whining of legions of disappointed Cross fans. For me, no explanation was needed; a person needs work. And to be honest, I found his 5 part response to be a mega-invaluable resource for learning what Cross has been up to these days.
But wait.... Patton ain't done. Via the Onion AV Club, Patton unleashed a counter-letter in response to David's treatise. That same day, Steve Hyden at the Onion had some strong, yet not altogether off-base, words on the subject. With message boards and commenters in full throttle, it looks like the argument is far from over. Who doesn't like cyclical arguments and flogging dead horses?

Neighbors Against Rock Concert Site vs Vineland Festival
VINELAND -- Members of a group opposed to the Vineland Music Festival -- including a former City Council president -- are mobilizing the troops to try to block the event. Neighbors Against Rock Concert Site (NARCS) will hold an organizational meeting 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at the New Italy Club in East Vineland. The festival is scheduled for Aug. 8-10 on a 570-acre farm near Sherman Avenue and Hance Bridge Road. It is expected to draw 35,000 to 40,000 people over three days, many of whom will camp on-site, festival organizers said.
Local developer Pete Steenland and his daughter, Joy Marion, said they recently formed the group to let residents opposed to the festival have a unified voice. Both Steenland and Marion live next to the festival site. [The Daily Journal] (via)

Dirty Projectors played New Years (After the Jump) & NPR
Dirty Projectors @ Knitting Factory, NYC - New Years Eve, 2007/8 (CRED)
BV contributor Nick Masi was there, and he sent me this quick review:
They were great, of course. It was cool seeing them at Knitting Factory and Longstreth seemed to be in the best spirits I have ever seen him. They went on around 11:40 and played til about 12:20! That was the worst part of the show. I was kind of shocked. Especially because they didn't play "Rise Above." They missed the countdown, like everyone always does, but they made up for it. They stopped "Gimme Gimme Gimme" to do the countdown, and then went right into "New Attitude" to start 2008!More pics and video @ Stereogum.
Dirty Projectors were also recently featured on NPR where the comments indicate they are as controversial there, as they are around here.

Work commenced in early 2007. The album title, officially confirmed by the band on December 31, was revealed to be "Accelerate" in an issue of Q Magazine. This was also alluded to on the graphics of the band's website, REMhq.com. The producer, Jacknife Lee, was announced on 9 March 2007 [Wikipedia] (via everywhere)Check out NinetyNights.com for a confusing pre-"Accelerate"-release promotional experience. R.E.M. are confirmed to play Langerado in March, and then are expected to tour some more to promote the album.

Bodies of Water & Le Loup - 2008 Tour Dates
Le Loup @ Pianos (BV CMJ), NYC - Oct 2007 (CRED)
First of all, David from Bodies of Water did send a message (and a comment) to say that his late-night drunken posting to the Bodies of Water website was not a reflection of the entire band, and was removed at their request. He is not trying to start anything or make his band sound better - just a mistake. That said, Bodies of Water (Secretly Canadian) are going on a spring tour with Le Loup (Hardly Art). It looks like they'll both also be playing SXSW before making their way to Mercury Lounge and Union Hall. All dates below.....

Ivan Howard of the Rosebuds on selling out Bowery Ballroom, Micheal Showalter, seeing Bon Iver and stuff
DOWNLOAD: Bon Iver - For Emma (MP3)
Merge posted Ivan's 2007 Top 10 list yesterday. Here are some excerpts....
10.) Selling out the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on our US Tour in May. You have to understand that our first ever show as The Rosebuds in NY was at a place called the Sidewalk Cafe on Avenue A, that held about 15 people all of whom were friends of the band we were playing with. Well, I should not say it was a real show because it really was an "Open Mic" night where everyone in the audience got in for free. The only catch was they had a two drink minimum! The Rosebuds have some shows coming up. Bon Iver has some shows coming up. More below....2.) Watching Bon Iver's" first show ever at our Rosebuds' show at the House of Rock in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. We drove all night from Chicago to get to the afternoon show on time, and Justin (aka Bon Iver) who was our guitarist on tour kept telling us about how awesome his hometown was and about this place called The Joynt down from the venue where his parents met. Well what was awesome was the Bon Iver set. That was the first time any of us ever saw Justin play those songs. When he played "For Emma, For Ever Ago" and dedicated it to Kelly and me, it was all I could do to even watch the song it was so good. If I would have been more of a man I would have just balled my eyes out like I wanted to right there in front of everyone. But I kept it together that time.

Sullivan Hall - a NYC music venue (formerly Lion's Den)
Sullivan Hall is a 345 capacity music and event venue located in Greenwich Village in downtown Manhattan near the New York University community (214 Sullivan St.). We are big music fans who frequent shows and are friends with many musicians and artist representatives. We listened to what they had to say about the type of venue they’d like to see in New York City. We created an ideal venue for both performers and fans alike. We put a state of the art sound and lighting system, and the space has near perfect sight lines. Even on a sold out show, you will have an intimate experience with your favorite performers at Sullivan Hall.Tea Leaf Green played the grand opening celebration last night. Other shows lined up at this newly-renovated jam-and-related band-friendly spot include Marco Benevento, Hassan Hakmoun, Lettuce, Ryan Montbleau Band, Dub Is A Weapon and Appetite For Destruction (the other GNR tribute band).

The Killing of John Lennon
"The Killing of John Lennon," which took a Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and was picked up for American distribution by IFC films, opens at the IFC Center on Wednesday. "All Chapman's words are his own," declares a preliminary title in Mr. Piddington's film. Extensive first-person narration by Mr. Bell as Chapman (the actor's prior credits are, not surprisingly, mostly confined to voice-over work) is apparently culled from Chapman's own journals. But the Beatle-killer's feature-length monologue is itself peppered with quotes from "Taxi Driver," "Apocalypse Now," and, of course, J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye." It would appear that Chapman's head was not exactly buzzing with original ideas. [NY Sun]Trailer below....
