Finalizing the Ph.D.

During the coming weekend, I hope to correct the errata and maybe do a couple of structural changes before I’ll send the package to my opponent. After that, I will try to find time for writing two book proposals based on the manuscript. Meanwhile, I try to gather forces and resources for launching the online analysis tools. There’s board game design also in progress. If all goes well, 2008 might prove quite an eventful year!

Lecturing Mini-Tour, 2nd leg

I’ll be heading to the north of Sweden, to Skellefteå, this week to give a mix of lectures, analysis exercises, and Gamegame during a spell of two days. It’s part of a game design course in Luleå University of Technology. From there, I’ll head for the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm to give a visiting lecture about Applied Ludology.

There will be a defense!

I’m happy to announce that my Ph.D. evaluations have both come in and they are positive, yippee! After some scheduling negotiations, it now seems pretty certain that my defense will be on March 8th next year.

Lecturing Mini-Tour

I’ll be lecturing next week in Malmö and Copenhagen: First, on Monday the 29th, I’ll be giving a couple of talks in Malmö University, and on the following a day I’ll have a visiting spot in the Advanced Game Theory course at ITU. Looking forward to this! I’ll be posting my materials later.

[edit]

The presentation slides from ITU can be found from my slidespace.

Thesis Manuscript v0.9 available

In the wake of the DiGRA conference and due to the on-going wait with the evaluation, I’ve decided to publish the manuscript for download. It’s quite a heavy set, some 400 pages, and there is obviously a host of crunch-time errata which I will deal with later - but what the hell, here you go:

Games without Frontiers: Theories and Methods for Game Studies and Design

My presentation slides from the DiGRA 2007 Tokyo conference provide an overview to the project. You can find them at Slideshare.

I’m looking forward to comments - I’m also available for teaching & lecturing!

Wait goes on

I haven’t posted in ages, mostly due to the fact that there has been no visible process to report about. I’m still waiting for my examination results concerning the Ph.D. Suddenly it seems to be a bit unsure whether I’m able to defend the work during 2007.

Well, on a more positive note, I’m leaving for Tokyo Game Show and the DiGRA Conference next week. In addition, the online analysis tools are nearing their alpha stage, and I will be having a test workshop on them with the Game Research Lab scholars in Tampere on October. At some point during the coming months, they will be available publicly - as will my thesis, hopefully. I got a poster into the Futureplay Conference on the subject, but I won’t be travelling there myself. There will be some teaching gigs, though, at least in Sweden during the rest of the year, it would seem. My board game prototype is almost ready for some serious pitching to publishers, too. In the middle of all this, I’m trying to find time and energy to play Bioshock.
Anyhow, I’m looking forward to the trip to Japan, nice people, and all that Tokyo cool :) Feel free to contact via e-mail if you want to know more about my projects.

Prototypes and proposals in the works

While I wait for the thesis examination results, there are a number of areas where I am progressing - slowly, in the midst of daytime work: I will launch the online analysis tools for the site in August/September. Once I get the examiners’ comments, I will produce a downloadable PDF of the whole manuscript. I am also writing a book proposal based on the thesis, and finishing a board game prototype with help from the guys at Moido Games. During July, I will mostly be on vacation… See ya later!

Talk @ Nordic Game

[edit: IE seems to have some problems with Slideshare embedding, so here’s a direct link to the presentation:]

I will give a talk at the academic track of next week’s Nordic Game event at Mälmö, Sweden. I’ve been slotted parallel to Matsuura-san of Parappa fame, among others. (Luckily I already have a signed Parappa soundtrack by Matsuura from Tokyo some years ago ;) Anyhow, you have a chance to check out my presentation right here.

At Your Service: Lecture materials & requests section added

With the thesis awaiting for official approvement, I hope to expand my lecturing activities in order to further develop the results through practical application.

Lecture materials & requests will present slidesets and teasers, via Slideshare, of the lecture and workshop packages I’m offering. They are geared towards balancing theory with practical exercises. I will add material slowly but surely during the coming weeks.

The online analysis tool section will be the next significant future addition to the site, asap. Meanwhile, do not hesitate to ask.
