Aberystwyth amongst European finance elite

The Old College, University of Wales Aberystwyth

The latest volume of the internationally respected Journal of Business Finance and Accounting ranks the University of Wales, Aberystwyth 22nd in the top 100 European academic institutions on the basis of publications in the World’s top 15 finance journals.

The study is based on publications made in the period 1990 – 1999 and includes the work of Aberystwyth researchers in both Accountancy and Finance and Financial Economics. Within the UK and Wales Aberystwyth placed 14th and 1st respectively.

In 1999 the departments of Accountancy and Economics merged to create the Aberystwyth School of Management and Business (ASMB). Current expertise within the School covers corporate tax burdens and influence of taxation on asset pricing, economics of sport, dividend policy, auditor independence and audit pricing.

Professor Gary Akehurst, Director of ASMB said: “This is well-deserved recognition for the excellent research in accounting and finance which is undertaken at Aberystwyth. This ground-breaking research continues to provide practical solutions to complex business problems”

ASMB currently has 850 students studying a range of undergraduate and post graduate courses in Business Management, Accounting and Finance and Economics. It also offers the only Association of MBAs (AMBA) accredited MBA programme in Wales and recruits successfully within Wales, the UK and internationally.

For the new academic year (2004/5) the School is introducing three new degree programmes in Accounting & Finance with Management, Accounting & Finance with Marketing, and Economics with Management. Two new post graduate courses are also being launched; MSc Econ Management with Finance and MSc Econ Management with Marketing.
