Creepy LA's Haunted Los Angeles

The idea that Los Angeles is haunted shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Between the outrageous personalities who have called this place home and the gory murders and tragedies that have occurred here, you've got the makings for some serious scares. Forget the obvious ones: We've all heard about ghostly Marilyn Monroe sightings at the Roosevelt Hotel, and the specters that wander the Queen Mary. We wanted more, so we asked David Markland over at Creepy LA to pull some of his favorites from the frighteningly exhaustive map he's compiled. From ancient Native American burial grounds to suicide bridges, here are a handful of LA's most haunted spots. MAP »

Sex Clubs in Sydney

It's not like San Francisco or Los Angeles quite yet, but Sydney's adventurous sex spots are definitely on the rise. These clubs do come and go, but local enthusiasts keep the scene jumping. If it's leather, fetish, fisting, ball handling, or swinging, then you'll certainly find a receptive locale that will put a naughty smirk on your face. Make sure you play nice and safe. And most of all, have good, dirty fun. MAP »

Washingtonian Wine Bars

In a city where the Miller Lite consumption to fratboy population ratio remains high, a handful of brave wine connoisseurs are attempting to teach even the most gauche DC-ites in the ways of oaky undertones. Before the end of the year, four new wine bars will open, but you can get a jumpstart on your vino education by visiting some old standards what have been serving wine to Washington sophisticates for years. The Best Hot Chocolate in Paris

Awhile back, we told you where to find some of the best chocolate in Paris, and many of those celebrated chocolate houses have tea salons attached serving chocolat chaud à l'ancienne -- with real, high quality chocolate and milk, not scary powder. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the fierce belief among the Frencher-than-the-French tourist that the best place to drink hot chocolate is the legendary and overrated Cafe Angélina on the rue de Rivoli. A certain kind of (especially American or Japanese) tourist will in fact be scolded by his/her snobby and like-minded acquaintances if he/she does not return with reports of a trip to this tourist trap. More on that below for those of you who cannot resist the peer pressure. But here are our suggestions for a handful of more deserving places to tuck in and drink un chocolat chaud -- one of the great comforts and pick-me-ups of winter in Paris. MAP »

Haunted New York

In a city as old as New York, a few heads are bound to roll (or commit suicide, murder, or vanish), so it's no surprise that the Big Apple might as well be renamed the Big Pumpkin; it's certainly one of the most haunted cities in the country. In honor of Halloween, we've compiled a list of New York's most famous spots to see a specter. MAP »

Debriefer: Steamclam.com's Matt Kliegman

If we had to find ourselves a modern-day Renaissance man, why not Matt Kliegman. DJ, artist, writer, and filmmaker, Kliegman's a man of many parts. As proof, check out his site, Steamclam.com, plus regularly irregular nights at New York's Gallery Bar, and even better, he's a Midwestern boy with a thing for farmer's daughters. Though Kliegman's thriving in NYC, he's revisiting his roots for our collective benefit.

We're going to imprison you in the city of your choice for the rest of your natural life. You can do anything you want there, but you must stay in that city forever. Where would you choose?
Usually I'd say New York, but I think in this situation I'd have to say Milwaukee. I feel like the locals would be a little bit more considerate of my bizarre situation.

Why would you live in this city forever and not somewhere else?
There are miles of cornfields just outside the city. I miss being able to jam some tunes and drive around the corn. Burn some gas up. MORE »

Inexpensive Industry Schmooze Sites

In LA, you can pitch a movie or TV idea to basically anyone who'll listen: producers, directors, entourages, or assistants. The trick is finding (and cornering) these vital people. Though painfully expensive eateries like The Grill and Craft are typical of the places that attract the true players, Los Angeles zoning regulations do allow for a few "low key" (read: cheap) industry hangouts. These places are perfect stalking grounds for impoverished would-be screenwriters teeming with freshly Kinko'ed scripts and bong-inspired sitcom pitches. Become a regular at the following places, learn who's who, and keep an eye on your prey. Once that important development exec decides you're "safe" and lets down his guard, you can immediately drop the baseball small talk and hit him with your genius "Shrek meets Saw" movie idea. MAP »

New hhstyle.com/Limited Concept Shop

The Tadao Ando-designed bunker-like satellite store for hhstyle.com's flagship shop in Harajuku has not disappeared, but a slight change has taken a hold of it as of this month. Gone are the furnishings of the luxurious Armani Casa line (and the old name of hhstyle.com/Casa), and in comes hhstyle.com/Limited (6-14-5 Jingumae, 03-3400-8821). It's a new concept store that looks to mix things up with a collection of interior goods not normally available in Japan, as well as a line from Vitra. The store has always been a popular stop on any retail tour of the area, and this renewal should make it that much more worthy of a return visit.
