Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Nintendo DS delivers an arsenal of modern weaponry, arming gamers with precision controls and touch screen capabilities for battle across the world's most dangerous hotspots. In an unfolding story that parallels the epic, high-octane PC and next generation console Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the Nintendo DS title enlists players as U.S. and coalition forces against a rogue enemy, where the action rages from land to the skies in all-out combat that threatens the world. Nintendo DS Touch Screen and Stylus – Intuitive stylus-based movement controls allows unique ways to construct explosive devices, disarm traps, and perform hand-to-hand combat. Diversity of Gameplay – Delivering a variety of combat, the title takes players from the soldier to the satellite with multiple scenarios. Gamers will experience mobilization as they fast-rope from tactical helicopters, engage hostile forces from an aerial gunship, and experience the ferocity of building to building fighting. Instant Action – Featuring the signature Call of Duty epic combat and intensity, the Nintendo DS title delivers an Instant Action mode allowing players to quickly access previously completed missions. Multiplayer Support – Leveraging wireless local area network (WLAN) for ad-hoc connectivity, up to four players quickly ease into the visceral action of modern warfare combat. [Activision]

The game’s biggest strength is in how well it establishes the tone and feeling of the console CoD4 games. The fast pace, mission structure, and gameplay are all distinctly Call of Duty, and everything performs beautifully.

Call of Duty 4 manages to bring the frenetic, highly scripted gunfights of its big siblings to the Nintendo DS. It’s definitely one of the handheld’s best shooters, although it would have arguably been the best with the inclusion of online multiplayer.

An extremely rewarding tour of duty for the DS. [Jan 2008, p.76]

Games Master UK
It's not epic, but this is largely successful at bringing CoD to the DS. [Jan 2008, p.76]

Being able to hop on Wi-Fi for a quick frag here or there, even if it was only with three other people, could have spawned an active online community. While that omission may limit its long-term appeal for some, Call of Duty 4 on DS remains an impressive accomplishment and a game worthy of the name.

While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare isn't likely to bring a unanimous verdict when it comes to FPS on DS, it makes the most compelling case so far.

Although we'll take one of the higher-up versions just for the sake of looking at the unimaginable frame rate and getting some online multiplayer in, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is still a solid recommendation on the handheld front.

IGN
An impressive, immersive, entertaining pocket experience that truly feels like a miniaturized version of its console counterparts.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare really is a difficult title to attach a number to; some parts will blow you away, but you will always have a sinking feeling that something is off.

A surprisingly well-executed action game that actually comes close to being a nearly perfect first-person shooter on the DS handheld.

What it will deliver is a campaign long enough to keep players busy, and more importantly, interested throughout.

On the DS, Call of Duty 4 is an intense first-person-shooter that's knocked down a few pegs by the lack of online play.

Standard shooty war game that's unremarkable on DS despite the lack of handheld shooty war games. [Jan 2008, p.61]

GamePro
Call of Duty 4 for the DS provides some decent--if watered down--first person shooting action. It doesn't live up to the standard set by Metroid Prime: Hunters or do a terribly good job of replicating the efforts of its console and PC bigger brothers, but it's a decently entertaining game for any DS owner who needs a FPS fix.

The horrific control scheme literally kills the game from the word go, and the pain is only amplified by the equally terrible teammate and enemy AI, the awful graphics, the schizophrenic aerial missions, and on and on and on.

Games Radar
Stick to the solo game and you'll get a decent, serviceable shooter that would have been memorable in 2000 - today, not so much. It does a respectable job of replicating the console experience, but it's still no replacement for the real thing.

Worth a look, then, but probably only if you're in a very exclusive set: FPS-obsessed gamers who only own a Nintendo DS.

Azrael S. gave it a9:
Very good graphics and gameplay.

D. H. gave it a1:
Repetitive gameplay and dumb enemy AI prevents this game from being what it could be. Overall a rental at best.

Dr. Dog gave it a9:
Very smart, plays great and I was hooked all the way through. Very creative use of different playing styles (overhead helicoptor bombing black and white level was a real treat). OF COURSE the graphics aren't as good as your PC/Wii/PS3 but then, did you enjoy Medal of Honor on the original Playstaion? You'll love this! Metroid is a nice FPS but just kinda Quake/Halo rip off. This is a real good gas! Go out and buy it!

Simon Y. gave it a7:
Really good for a DS FPS, but really bad when you compare it to a home console FPS. Multiplayer is good, but I would rate this game 9 if it had bots.

Douglas P. gave it an8:
Pros: -Good 3D for the DS -Controls are good, except aiming -Sound is good -Multiplayer is great Cons -Aiming feels too loose -There are sometimes slowdowns -No WiFi play

Plan 9 gave it a10:
Best FPS on the DS to date, hands down. This game is great, controls, gameplay - a refreshing change from WW2 also. Graphics? I think they are far better than Metroid Prime: Hunters. This game is well worth the money.
