PACKERS-EAGLES POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
ROOKIE STARTERS:
-Brandon Jackson becomes the first rookie running back to start since Samkon Gado (Dec. 19, 2005, at Baltimore) and the first rookie to start on opening day since John Brockington (Sept. 19, 1971, vs. New York Giants).
-Korey Hall becomes the first Packers rookie to start at fullback since William Henderson started the final regular season game in 1995 (Dec. 24, 1995, vs. Pittsburgh). He becomes the first Packers rookie to start on opening day at fullback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
-Green Bay is the first NFL team to open the regular season with two rookie starters in the backfield since 1996. That season, both St. Louis (Derrick Harris and Lawrence Phillips) and Miami (Stanley Pritchett and Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar) used an all-rookie backfield on opening day.
-Wide receiver James Jones becomes the first Packers rookie to start on opening day at wide receiver since Charles Lee in 2000 (Sept. 3, 2000, vs. New York Jets) when the Packers opened the game with three receivers. Wide receiver Robert Brooks also got the start on opening day as a rookie (Sept. 6, 1992, vs. Minnesota) when the Packers opened the game with three wide receivers. Both Lee and Brooks made their debut as the team's No. 3 wideout. Sterling Sharpe (Sept. 4, 1988, vs. Los Angeles Rams) and James Lofton (Sept. 3, 1978, at Detroit) were the only Packers rookies to start on opening day as one of two receivers since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Though the Packers opened with three receivers today, Jones was listed as the No. 2 - the first rookie to be listed at No. 2 since Sharpe.
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
-Today's paid attendance was 70,598.
-With today's win, quarterback Brett Favre ties John Elway's career quarterback win record. Favre now has 148 total wins.
-In his 15th career start on opening day, Favre improved his record to 10-5 in season openers.
-Rookie kicker Mason Crosby connected on a 53-yard field goal in the first quarter on his first career attempt. It marks the longest opening day field goal by a Packer since Chris Jacke hit a 53-yard field goal on Sept. 9, 1990 (vs. Los Angeles Rams, W, 36-24).
-Crosby is also the first Packers rookie kicker to win a game on a field goal since Chris Jacke in 1989 (Dec. 3, 1989, at Tampa Bay, W, 17-16).
-Linebacker Tracy White recorded the first touchdown of his NFL career. The fifth-year pro recovered a fumble in the end zone in the first quarter.
-Wide receiver Donald Driver recorded a catch for the 81st straight game.
-With six catches, Driver now stands tied with Antonio Freeman (213) as Lambeau Field's all-time leader in receptions.
-Today's win marks the first Green Bay season-opening win in three years. The last time the Packers opened the year with a win was on September 13, 2004, at Carolina, with a 24-14 advantage.
-The Packers won their first game of the season at Lambeau Field for the first time in five seasons. They had not won their home opener since an overtime victory over the Falcons in 2002 (Sept. 8, 2002, vs. Atlanta, W, 37-34 OT).
-The last time the Packers won on a field goal was December 21, 2006 against Minnesota. Dave Rayner's 44-yard field goal ensured a 9-7 Green Bay win.

PACKERS-EAGLES POST-GAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE MCCARTHY:
(on the play of special teams)
"I'm very happy with the special teams and what a great start for a rookie kicker. I can't be more happy for Mason (Crosby) and our special teams units. It's nice to see particularly the younger guys that played here last year really step up. We talked about being vastly improved in that area and today was the first step in that."
(on the play of the defense)
"I was really concerned about the defense at halftime because I clearly felt our offense kept them on the field too long. They were on the field almost 19 minutes (of the first half but) they just kept mustering up and containing (Brian) Westbrook for the most part, big third downs over and over again. I thought they played excellent today."
(on preaching about getting off to a fast start)
"It's the first step in getting off to a fast start. We're 1-0. It's definitely the starting point of our season. We have a lot of work to do, no doubt about that, but it's an excellent team win. Our guys played with tremendous energy. Their commitment to what we're doing and how we're doing it is the thing I'm very pleased (with)."
(on what impressed him about Crosby)
"What impressed me most about Crosby was he was the same way today as he's been all training camp. Everyone here has watched the kicking competition throughout training camp. It was a kicking clinic going on against those two (Crosby and Dave Rayner) and he's never blinked. I thought his mental toughness was something that was evident through that time and he showed it today."
(on handling adversity)
"I thought we handled adversity well. I thought there was points in the game where the momentum swayed away from us and we clearly bounced back, so I definitely felt we overcame adversity throughout the ballgame."
K MASON CROSBY:
(on being nervous going into the last kick)
"I think the nerves kind of started before the kick, actually on the sideline. Then once I ran on to the field and talked to (holder) Jon Ryan a little bit before the snap, it just kind of calmed down. Everything slowed down and the snap and hold were perfect, and the protection was great."
(on the emotions of making a game-winning kick)
"It's kind of like a dream come true. It's one of those things you think about and I've visualized this whole week just having a good game and making kicks. The thing I'm most happy about is just this team, how we fought through everything and we never surrendered on this thing and kept pushing and got a chance to win it. I was very happy I could perform and make the kick to finish it off for everybody."
(on proving the decision to keep him was correct)
"It's great being a part of this team. That's kind of my mindset right now, that this team is on the way up and it was a great feeling to get the win today. It was great to make the team and to be able to do this on my first time out. I just kind of got thrown into the fire on the first test and that's kind of how I like it. That's exciting."
QB BRETT FAVRE:
(on the difficulty of the game)
"It was tough. I haven't played the Eagles where it was not tough. That's an ugly win, but I've had plenty of games where we played a lot better and lost...I can't say enough about our defense and special teams, which was kind of the case in preseason. We put them in I don't know how many situations and they responded every time."
(on the play of the offense)
"Offensively we struggled, simple as that. I haven't been in too many games where we don't score an offensive touchdown and win, but as every coach or veteran player will say, you've got to win some of those sometimes. I'm telling you now, that was a good win."
(on what the offense has to do to help the defense and special teams)
"I hope they (defense) play like that every week, but there's no way we can win games like that week in, week out. We have to help those guys out and it's no secret we have to score points. We have to keep them off the field."
(on not being able to produce offensively)
"I hate it. I love to compete, but I love to score to kind of know where we stand offensively...I expect us to score. I expect to lead this team down and score every single time...To not score at all is beyond disappointing and I take that personally, as I should."
(on what they need to do on offense)
"We've got to run the ball better, no secret. We've got to find a way to push the ball downfield somehow, someway."
(on what it means to tie John Elway on all-time wins list)
"I think ultimately you're judged by wins and losses, but I think that is an unfair stat to the rest of my team. How can the quarterback who is one of 53 (players) be labeled with wins and losses and not the center or the safety or whatever. But that's the way it is and I'm glad there's a lot more wins than there is losses."
DT JOHNNY JOLLY:
(on the defense coming up with stops the entire game)
"I think we went out there and stuck together throughout the whole game and just played hard with each other. Everyone was making plays. We were getting everyone into the game. We just fought it out together and that's the way it's supposed to be."
(on if they can start any better than this)
"I hope it just gets better throughout the season. We're just going to keep pushing."
LB NICK BARNETT:
(on the play of the defense)
"I thought the defense played real well, there is still some things we need to clean up. If we clean a couple of minimal mistakes up, I don't think they get more than 200 yards. That comes with the first game, growing pains. We played well, we stepped up, made some plays when they got that turnover and they were in our zone. We made some big plays and got them out of field goal range and that was huge for us in the fourth quarter."
(on avoiding a slow start and getting a victory at home in week one)
"You know what? It's huge. Since I've been here, we haven't played well in the first couple of games at home. For us to get this win, especially against the Eagles, since I've been here, we haven't beat them, in their home. It's huge for us to get this win against them, and it being early in the season and getting the win."
(on finally beating the Eagles)
"It's huge. It's so huge that we beat the Eagles here. In the four years since I've been playing those guys, we haven't won one game. We came close, we had some tough ones and finally to beat them, it feels great, especially to start off with a win on top of that."
WR JAMES JONES:
(on getting his hands on the ball in a regular season game for the first time)
"It went pretty good. I'm just excited we got the victory. Like I said, it wasn't the best offensive day we could have had. I mean, we got to step it up. We got to help the defense a little bit. The defense played their butts off, so the offense (has) some preparation to do to get ready for next week."
(on as a collective unit, the entire team putting it together to get the win)
"Oh definitely, we had to put it together to get the win. That's all that matters in the NFL, is stacking victories. That's what we did and we got our first one under our belts. Now we start to prepare for next week."
(on the significance of getting the seasons first victory in the first game)
"It's real big. It definitely boosts our confidence too, just to let people know that we're ready to compete in this league. To get the first one under our belts, it just boosts our confidence up to get going to next weeks' game, and have a good game."
CB AL HARRIS:
(on the defensive series after the Eagles recovered the fumble in Green Bay territory)
"We didn't care. We didn't care if they got the ball on the one yard line. When we got in the huddle as a defense, we said, "Ok, we're not going to let them in. If they don't get in, they don't win." And the outcome is the outcome."
LS ROB DAVIS:
(on the confidence level the team has in Mason Crosby)
"Well I think the whole team has confidence. It starts with Mike (McCarthy), he wants us to show confidence out there. When we start talking about age, age is just a number as far as the youth on our team. So hopefully this will be a stepping stone for us. Like I said before, winning breeds confidence, so hopefully we'll get there."
(on the snap of the game winner being a little high)
"Yeah, you know that sucks. I'm not going to lie, that bothers the (heck) out of me, which won't allow me to enjoy this win like I should. I'm paid to do a job around here and do it right. That one kind of got a little bit higher on me, whether it was adrenaline, whatever the case may be. Jon (Ryan) protected me and sometimes you need that, you need your holder and your punter to protect you sometimes on those things and he was able to do that and we got the win."
RB DESHAWN WYNN:
(on the emotion of winning a tight game at the wire)
"Anytime you get the win, you're always going to be happy. It wasn't a pretty win, definitely. I think we'd like to improve on a lot more phases on offense. We just got to get in practice and get back on it and somehow take it over to the field."
(on the third down play he converted)
"Well he changed the play in the middle of the cadence and I didn't have time to get over to the other side to protect his right side. And he snapped the ball, so I tried to ran over there and pick-up somebody. I turned around and somebody was around his waist and I just started calling his name and he flicked it to me. Scott Wells is holding on my shoulder pad, telling me to "go." So I took off, there was a lot of grass, I was just trying to get the first down."
LB A.J. HAWK:
(on the defense carrying the team during the game)
"I think our d-line has done a great job this whole offseason, in camp especially and all through the preseason. Being great, being stout, at the same time getting a lot of pressure and helping us out on the back end. When a quarterback only has two or two and a half seconds to throw, it makes it a lot easier on us in the back end."
(on the assessment of how the team played overall)
"I obviously can't speak for some of the guys on the defense, but just like every other game there's ups and downs. We had a few spurts here and there where we should have got off the field, probably. And we'll clean that up, that always happens. I think for the most part, we wanted to respond to adversity, I think today we did. We had some adversity, we made sure that we capitalized on it."
**
EAGLES HEAD COACH ANDY REID:
(on the loss)
"We can't play like that and expect to win football games. Green Bay did a heck of a job staying with it and winning the football game, but we surely can't be going out and having turnovers on special teams, the dropped balls we had on offense, the penalties we had on offense and missing tackles on defense. You can't have those, not to compete on this level."
EAGLES LB TAKEO SPIKES:
(on bouncing back from this game)
"You bounce back because you know it is early in the season. It is just one game and one game doesn't determine your fate, you continue to come back and work."
(on if he thought the Eagles had the game locked up)
"I'm not a betting man, but I felt like we had the game sealed in the fourth quarter. They were the better team today, so give them credit, but I felt like this was our game to win."
EAGLES RB BRIAN WESTBROOK:
(on the flow of the offense)
"We didn't do a good job of getting into a flow early on, but then we had to throw the ball a little bit more than we wanted to, so we never really got into a rhythm all day long."
(on the Packers defense)
"Their defense did a good job. They really didn't do anything that we didn't expect, but as an offense we need to come together early as a team. Green Bay is a good football team and we respect the things that they did, but I think today we hurt ourselves more than they hurt us."
(on QB Donovan McNabb)
"I think he looked pretty accurate. He had a couple opportunities where he scrambled well. He played a decent game."
EAGLES QB DONOVAN MCNABB:
(on his first game back from last season's injury)
"It really doesn't matter because we lost the game. I had full command of everything that was going on out there. You need to take care of the little things in game situations and we all didn't do that today."
(on balancing the pass and run)
"When you get into a rhythm in the passing game you want to continue to attack and we had a couple of mistakes today. We had too many in the run and pass game today and I have to be the one who sets the tone in eliminating those."
(on not capitalizing on Trent Cole's fourth quarter forced fumble of Favre)
"We tried to run the ball twice and we weren't able to pick up any yards. We were in a passing situation when they were looking for us to pass (on third down) and we weren't able to capitalize and get the first down."
**
