Charity, prayers mark Id-ul-Fitr celebrations

Thiruvananthapuram: Muslims in Kerala celebrated Id-ul-Fitr on Saturday with traditional fervour, marking the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan.

The faithful turned up in large numbers in mosques and specially set up Idgahs across the State for Id namaz led by religious heads.

The celebrations began last evening after confirmation was received on the beginning of the month of Shawwal of the Islamic calendar after 30 days of fasting, penance and charity.

Imam Hamsa Moulavi Farooqi led the “perunal namaskaram” (Id namaz) at the famous Palayam mosque in the heart of the city here.

In many places, Muslim charity and cultural outfits organised distribution of food packets and garments to the poor and the needy as part of the celebrations.

Political leaders and community elders, in their Id greetings, urged the people to uphold the cherished ideals of love, compassion, brotherhood and social harmony. — PTI
