Did not dress for both pre-season games due to adductor injury…Started 13 games at running back before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury… Week 5, started at RB and caught the game-winning touchdown on a 14-yard reception from Damon Allen…Week 6, started at RB and generated 148 all-purpose yards in win over Winnipeg… Week 10, started at RB and generated 90 yards on the ground in Labour Day game at Hamilton… Week 11, started at RB and generated 123 all-purpose yards and 1 touchdown… Week 15, started at RB and caught the Argos’ first touchdown pass of the game before leaving in the second quarter with a hamstring injury…

2005 Playoffs Did not dress due to hamstring injury.

Started in 17 games with Toronto missing only Week 18 vs Montreal due to injury…Made Argo debut in Week 1 vs Saskatchewan, rushed 8 times for 22 yards and caught 5 passes for 27 yards…Week 8, scored his first two TDs as an Argonaut against his former team, Edmonton…Started in Labour Day Classic at Hamilton (Week 12), rushed for 110 yards (first 100 yard running game as an Argo) on 17 carries and 1 TD, including his longest career CFL run, 74 yards…Week 15, rushed for 129 yards on 21 carries (6.1 AVG, LG 20) in first game at Edmonton since 2002, was named runner-up for CFL Offensive Player of the Week…Week 16, scored 2 rushing TDs versus Calgary…Week 18, led the team in receiving with 7 receptions for 70 yards…Week 19, rushed for a season-high 136 yards on 18 carries…

2004 Playoffs Started at RB in East Semi-Final vs Hamilton…Started at RB and raced for 34 yards on the ground including one game-winning 25 yard touchdown…

Grey Cup Championship Started at RB and rushed 11 times for 75 yards and caught 4 passes for 24 yards in win vs BC.

Signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings (NFL) on February 13…played six games with one rush for 0 yards and 2 receptions and 16 kick returns for 346 yards, 21.6 avg.…placed on injured reserved (knee) October 24.

Signed with the Edmonton Eskimos April 26, 2002…became the first first-year player in CFL history to rush for more than 1,400 yards in a season (1,448)…finished season with 229 carries for 1,448 yards, 6.3 avg. and nine touchdowns…did not play in first five games of season making debut as a starter at running back in Eskimos game six…scored two touchdowns in West Championship leading Eskimos to Grey Cup Championship in Edmonton.

Started 10 games for the Chicago Enforcers (XFL)…rushed 150 times for 800 yards, 5.3 yard avg. and five touchdowns…also caught 17 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns… attended Dallas Cowboy’s training camp…suffered hamstring injury and was released.

Attended Denver Broncos training camp and was released.

Traded to the Denver Broncos (NFL) from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for WR Marcus Nash September 21…saw limited action with Denver.

Drafted by the Miami Dolphins (NFL) in the 1st Round (29 Overall) of the NFL Draft…holds Miami’s single season combined yards record for a rookie (1,655).

1997 Started nine games including the Motor City bowl…totaled 166 carries for 862 yards (5.2 AVG) and 7 touchdowns…added 13 receptions for 113 yards, 8 punt returns for 46 yards and 13 kickoff returns for 315 yards and one touchdown…

1996 Started five games rushing 181 times for 788 yards and 5 touchdowns…16 receptions for 99 yards…17 kickoff returns for 473 yards and touchdowns.

Prior to attending Mississippi, Avery attended Northwestern Mississippi Community College. Avery attended Asheville High School in North Carolina. As much of a personality off the field as on, John is the proud father of John Avery III “Trey”. John recently purchased a home in Oakville, ON and spent much of the off-season performing around Toronto as a stand up comedian and working on a TV pilot about his life.
