                           COIL: AN INTRODUCTION

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

COIL was formed on May 11th, 1983 by JOHN BALANCE (aka Geff Rushton, Jhon[n]
Balance), at the time a member of Psychic TV. Initially, Coil co-existed
with another project called Zos Kia, with the core members of both bands
being Balance, his fellow PTV member JOHN GOSLING (aka Joan d'Arc) and MIN.
This line-up played four live performances as Coil and/or Zos Kia throughout
1983, often aided by PETER "SLEAZY" CHRISTOPHERSON (ex-Throbbing
Gristle, and also a member of PTV).

Soon after the appearance of Coil/Zos Kia and Psychic TV at the infamous
Berlin Atonal Festival on December 3rd, 1983, Balance and Christopherson
left Psychic TV and Zos Kia, becoming the core of Coil.

Balance and Christopherson remained the two primary members of the group
until Balance's death by accidental fall on November 13th, 2004. Soon
after this event, Christopherson announced that Coil would cease to exist,
although both he and Jhonn's partner, Ian Johnstone, would be continuing
musical and artistic endevours in the same spirit. This discography will
include any material that they may release in the future.

Other members of Coil over the years included:

* DANNY HYDE: While never named an "official" member, Hyde was Coil's long-
time producer and collaborator, and was active in co-writing some of their
material.

* STEPHEN THROWER: A member circa 1986 to 1991. Previous to this, he was a
member of the band Possession, who released one album and appeared on several
compilations. He has also contributed to recordings by Skullflower, Satin
Chickens, Identical and Put Put, and in 1998 he partnered with Simon Norris
to form Cyclobe.

* OTTO AVERY: Listed as a member on GOLD IS THE METAL, LOVE'S SECRET
DOMAIN and other releases, although according to Sleazy, he didn't actually
contribute musically but was simply a young guy who looked good in their
publicity shots. Sleazy has also commented that the name has been used by
John Balance on occassion.

* DREW McDOWALL: Worked with Coil regularly through the early 90s, and
became an official member of the band in 1995. He was the husband of Rose
McDowall (Current 93, Strawberry Switchblade), but they are no longer
married. He left Coil and moved to NYC circa 1999/2000. He has done solo
work under the name Screwtape, and is currently working with Kara
Bohnenstiel under the name Captain Sons And Daughters.

* BILL BREEZE: An electric viola player, he joined in early 1997, and
ceased being an active member of the group in 2000.

* THIGHPAULSANDRA: Also a member of Spiritualized and Queen Elizabeth
(with Julian Cope), and collaborator with Jodie Evans of Anal, he is a
classically trained musician who officially joined Coil on January 26th,
1999. His membership was sporadic due to other committments, but he was
usually part of the live line-up, and participated on much of Coil's
recorded output from 1999 through 2004.

* SIMON NORRIS aka OSSIAN BROWN: formerly a member of Death In June, and
currently a member of Cyclobe (along with ex-Coil member Stephen Thrower),
Norris/Brown was a frequent member of Coil's live line-up.

Coil also featured many guest artists on their recordings including Rose
McDowall, Marc Almond, Gavin Friday, Clint Ruin (Foetus) and Annie Anxiety.

In 1994, Coil started releasing material under other names. These aliases
included The Eskaton, ELpH, Black Light District, Time Machines and Rosa
Mundi (the latter in collaboration with Rose McDowall and Robert Lee of
Sorrow). When used, these names are noted in the title section of the
listings.

(1) ALBUM, SINGLE, CASSETTE & VIDEO RELEASES by Coil and aliases

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zos Kia/Coil: TRANSPARENT
CS 1984 Nekrophile Rekords NRC 05 AT

Sicktone / Baptism of Fire / Violation / Poisons / Truth / Sewn Open
[Rehersal 5.X.1983] / Sicktone / Silence & Secrecy (section) [Live
at Magenta Club, London 5.VIII.1983] / Truth (version) [8.X.83] /
Stealing the Words [3.VIII.82] / On Balance [5.V.82]

        Notes:
The first five tracks ("Sicktone" to "Truth") form Side 1 of the
cassette, which is labelled "Zos Kia. Berlin Atonal. 3.XII.1983".
The remainder of the tracks form Side 2, which is credited to
"Coil/Zos Kia", and were recorded in 1982/83. The line-up of Coil
and Zos Kia were basically identical at this time.

The packaging of the first copies of this release was orangish-brown
in colour. Subsequent editions were green, as are the CD and LP
        reissues.

Magenta Club, London 5.XII.1983] / Here to Here (Double Headed
Secret) / Stealing the Words / On Balance

        Notes:
"Rape" is the same as "Violation" from the cassette release.
"Silence & Secrecy" is shorter than the version on the cassette.

The dates listed for "Sewn Open" and "Silence & Secrecy" are
incorrect. They should be 5.X.1983 and 5.VIII.1983 respectively.

The first CD edition is packaged in a mini LP style cardboard
slipcase, and includes a booklet with photos from Coil/Zos Kia
performances, text of a Coil Manifesto written by John Balance in
1983, and a transcript of a coversation between John Balance and
Peter Christopherson regarding the Coil/Zos Kia performances and
        recordings.

The LP edition is a limited edition of 1000 copies on clear
vinyl and 140 copies on green vinyl - 100 signed and numbered,
40 signed and alphabetized. Signatures are John, Peter and John
Gosling. It includes an insert with most of the contents of the
        booklet from the CD edition.

The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. It is in a regular
jewelcase as opposed to the slipcase package of the official
edition. A logo printed on the cover claims that it is limited to
        500 copies.

How to Destroy Angels / Absolute Elsewhere

        Notes:
This release is subtitled "ritual music for the accumulation of male
        sexual energy".

The b-side, "Absolute Elsewhere", is intended to be non-playable,
        and according to Coil:
        - first pressing had unplayable noise-filled grooves
        - second pressing had playable multi-layered music
        - third pressing had a smooth, grooveless surface as originally
          intended.

However, there's also evidence of two other versions existing
        (perhaps the 1988 edition?):
        - playable b-side with a constant tone for around 15 minutes.
        - playable b-side with a series of "test tones" in unconnected
          locked grooves

First pressing included an A3 black & white poster.

1984 and 1988 editions have different labels from each other.

A pink vinyl edition exists, although it's unclear how many copies of
this edition were pressed. This may be a bootleg.

This track also appears on the UNNATURAL HISTORY anthology in mono
form, and various reworkings of the track appear on the HOW TO
DESTROY ANGELS (REMIXES AND RE-RECORDINGS) CD.

SCATOLOGY
        LP 1984 Force & Form/K.422/Some Bizarre FFK 1 UK

Ubu Noir / Panic / At the Heart of it All / Tenderness of Wolves /
The Spoiler / Clap / Solar Lodge / The Sewage Worker's Birthday
Party / Godhead = Deathead / Cathedral in Flames

        Notes:
First pressing of 3000 copies had an "Anal Staircase" postcard pasted
over the Black Sun design on the cover. The same image was later used
for the sleeve of the ANAL STAIRCASE 12".

Second pressing of 2000 copies had a "Sexual Architechture" postcard
pasted on the cover of random copies.

Two more editions were planned but never released:
        - a "skidmarked" coloured vinyl edition
        - an edition with a bonus 7" on the German label Record Vox

The working title for this album was POISONS, and John Balance
originally intended to release it on his own Hearsay And Heresy
        label.

The track "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party" was originally
intended for release as a single-sided flexidisk to be included with
an issue an Italian magazine called "Free". This release never took
        place.

Ubu Noir / Panic / At the Heart of it All / Tenderness of Wolves /
The Spoiler (unreleased alternative version) / Clap / Restless Day /
        Aqua Regis / Solar Lodge / The S.W.B.P. / Godhead = Deathead /
Cathedral in Flames / Tainted Love

        Notes:
"The S.W.B.P." is the same as "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party"
from the LP release. "Godhead = Deathead" has an intro that is not
        on the LP version.

Initial pressings of the Some Bizarre CD had black lettering and
graphics on a white background. This was switched to white-on-black
on later pressings. This CD has been re-pressed many times since
the initial release, but all later Some Bizarre editions are
unauthorized by Coil. All Some Bizarre pressings have the tracks
"Restless Day" and "Aqua Regis" listed in the wrong order on the
cover, but the tracks appear on the disc in the order above.

A reissue via Wax Trax! Records was announced, but was cancelled
when Coil severed their contract with the label following its buy
        out by TVT Records.

The Always/Stable cassette edition is unofficial. It is a bootleg
of the Some Bizarre CD, and has "Restless Day" and "Aqua Regis"
listed in the wrong order on the insert.

The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that it is limited to 500 copies.

The Threshold House CD pressing is remastered by Thighpaulsandra,
and is fully authorized by Coil. It features a different cover from
the Some Bizarre edition, with the text "Stevo, Pay Us What You Owe
Us!" printed on the cover and spine, in reference to the fact that
Stevo at Some Bizarre has not paid them for the many CD pressings
he has released. The cover also states that this is Volume 1 in a
series of remastered reissues, with Volume 2 being HORSE ROTORVATOR
and Volume 3 being LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN. The spine mistakenly has it
        printed as Volume 2.

"Panic" is different from the version on SCATOLOGY. This version
also appears on the UNNATURAL HISTORY III anthology release.

"Aqua Regis" and "Tainted Love" also appear on the CD release of
        SCATOLOGY.

The version of "The Anal Staircase" on this cassette is slightly
different from the version that appeared on the finished album. It
later appeared on a compilation under the title "The Anal Staircase
        (relentless mix)".

Several track titles were changed slightly for the official album
release, and "Acapulco March" was completely renamed to "Herald".

has 2 second gaps between the tracks, while the second does not.

The Threshold House CD pressing is remastered by Thighpaulsandra,
and is fully authorized by Coil. It features a different cover from
the Some Bizarre edition, with the text "Stevo, Pay Us What You Owe
Us!" printed on the cover and spine, in reference to the fact that
Stevo at Some Bizarre has not paid them for the many CD reissues
he has released. The cover also states that this is Volume 2 in a
series of remastered reissues, with Volume 1 being SCATOLOGY and
Volume 3 being LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN.

        Notes:
From the liner notes: "This release is not the follow-up to HORSE
ROTORVATOR... but a completely seperate package - a stopgap and a
breathing space - the space between two twins. Presented here are
thoroughbreds that escaped the Horse Rotorvator - discarded shards,
distortions, disappointments, scrambled and disassembled stages.
Remnants of what once was. This record is a chance for us to
release some otherwise placeless pieces of music."

The first LP release took 5 different forms:

        (1) Regular release on black vinyl, possibly limited to 2000 copies.
Some copies were signed by John & Peter at London's Rough Trade
record shop on March 12th, 1988.
        (2) A limited edition, some copies including THE WHEEL 7". One
source says this edition was limited to 900 copies, some on red
vinyl and some on clear. A second source states that it was
limited to 650 copies, 150 on red vinyl and 500 clear.
        (3) Another limited edition (possibly a test pressing) on red vinyl,
including THE WHEEL 7", in an unfinished sleeve, limited to 25
            copies.
        (4) A deluxe box set released in 1988 and limited to 55 copies.
The box looks like a hardcover book with a black linen cover and
an 8-pointed star printed on the front in gold ink. The album is
pressed on clear vinyl, and the outer sleeve has no text on the
front cover and is finished with gold leaf. The set also includes
a copy of THE WHEEL 7", a numbered & signed certificate, a credits
insert, two posters, three colour prints and a booklet.
        (5) In 2001, 25 extra copies of the original vinyl release were
found and offered for sale via Coil's mail order website. The
outer sleeve for these copies are the same as those used in the
            deluxe box set edition.

The second LP release has slightly different packaging. Initial
        copies included the KEELHAULER 7".

        Notes:
The first CD release was initially limited to 1000 numbered copies.
It was later released as a regular edition. Both versions have a
problem with the track indexing on the last three tracks.

The second CD release is subtitled RETURNING TO THE PURITY OF THE
CURRENT and has all new artwork. The track indexing problem was
        fixed for this version.

The Russian editions on ArsNova are unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that they are limited to 500 copies. The first pressing
has 2 second gaps between the tracks, while the second does not. Both
of them have the track indexing problem of the original Normal
        edition.

        Notes:
Limited edition of 500 copies, only available with some copies of
the first LP release of GOLD IS THE METAL.

"The Wheel" is almost indentical to the version on the IF YOU CAN'T
PLEASE YOURSELF YOU CAN'T PLEASE YOUR SOUL compilation, with the
        only difference being a vocal count-in of "1, 2, 3, 4" at the
beginning - the version on the compilation only has "4".

"The Wheal" appears on the CD editions of GOLD IS THE METAL.

        Notes:
The first 3 tracks are taken from Coil's soundtrack to the Clive
Barker film "Hellraiser" which was rejected by the film studio.

The remainder of the tracks (which constitute side B of the release)
are a selection of short peices that were commissioned for use as
music for advertisements on British television. They also appear on
the anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY III under the group title of
"Music For Commercials". These tracks were originally planned to be
released as a limited edition 7" EP on R+D Group 28.

Initial 10" pressing on clear vinyl, probably limited to 500 copies.
Second 10" pressing on black vinyl, quantity unknown.
Third 10" pressing on pink vinyl, probably limited to 500 copies.

CDEP edition is titled HELLRAISER THEMES.

These tracks also appear on the UNNATURAL HISTORY II anthology CD
along with other tracks from the same sessions.

The first pressing of the CD had black lettering on a blue
background, while the next few pressings had black lettering on a
silver background. After switching to a different manufacturer, the
colours changed again to silver-grey lettering on a white background.

THE WHEAL/KEELHAULER
        7" 1990 Threshold House/Normal Records NORMAL 77 S DE

        The Wheal / Keelhauler

        Notes:
This limited edition release was initially only available with
initial copies of the second LP release of GOLD IS THE METAL.

"Keelhauler" is unavailable elsewhere. "The Wheal" appears on the
CD editions of GOLD IS THE METAL.

In 1996, a few remaining copies were found by John and Sleazy who
made them available via the Internet. Each copy came with a special
handmade sleeve that reads: "This so-called special edition of Coil's
Keelhauler single is one of 23 copies found at the back of a wardrobe
and offered for sale via rec.music.industrial at the outrageous price
of $20." (This message is meant to poke fun at the fact that several
r.m.i subscribers commented that they felt the price was too high,
triggering a heated debate regarding the ethics of limited edition
releases.) The other side of the sleeve features John & Sleazy's
photos, signatures and fingerprints (probably another poke at the
supposed "criminal nature" of the release). Each copy also included
        several stickers as inserts.

        Wrong Eye / Scope

        Notes:
Limited edition of 2300 copies, broken down as follows:
        - 26 copies in a pink sleeve, lettered (A to Z) and signed by Coil
          and cover artist Savage Pencil
        - 974 copies in white sleeve, numbered
        - 1000 copies in yellow sleeve
        - 300 copies in green sleeve

Some copies have a gold sticker with a black "demonic" emblem in
the middle circle on the front cover.

"Wrong Eye" is described by Coil as being a "rough sketch" of the
track "Windowpane" (from LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN). Coil has also
stated that speculation about "Scope" being an early version of
"Her Friends The Wolves" (from STOLEN AND COTAMINATED SONGS) is
false, and that the track was actually a "studio jam" fueled by
        "experimenting with MDMA".

Both tracks appear on THE PORTABLE ALTAMONT compilation CD and the
anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY III along with "Meaning What
Exactly?", another track recorded around the same time.

        Notes:
As the subtitle of this release suggests, this is a collection of
tracks that appeared on various compilations and limited edition
        releases between 1983 and 1990.

The track "How To Destroy Angels" appears here in a mono version.

Early pressings of this release are succeptable to the "disc rot"
problem that has been striking many discs pressed by PDO in the
early '90's. This problem is first evidenced by the label side of
the disc turning colour to a gold or bronze, followed by a static-
like deterioration of the sound on the disc starting from the last
        track and moving backwards.

The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that it is limited to 500 copies.

        - 120 DALMATIONS IN SODOM (from 1987 newsletter)
        - STOLEN AND CONTAMINATED SONGS (from 1987 newsletter; later used
for a "companion" release to this album)
        - THE DARK AGE OF LOVE (mentioned in the liner notes of GOLD IS
          THE METAL)
        - THE SIDE EFFECTS OF LIFE (from notes on WRONG EYE single).

An advance cassette was released in 1990 in a generic promo sleeve.

        Notes:
"The Snow" and "Windowpane" appear in extended forms on the CD
editions, although it is not noted.

A handful of early copies of the Torso edition were pressed with the
wrong music. Most of them were returned to Torso and destroyed.

The Russian editions are unofficial. They both have altered
packaging and different fonts/colours are used in some places. The
1999 version has "The Snow" misspelt "The Show" on the cover. A
logo printed on the cover of the ArsNova edition claims that it is
        limited to 500 copies.

The Threshold House CD pressing is remastered by Thighpaulsandra,
and the opening to "Disco Hospital" is slightly edited. The cover
is slightly different, featuring an expanded view of the painting by
Steven Stapleton, and the back cover features the track listing in
gold ink on a black background, making it much easier to read than
the original edition. The reissue does not include a lyric booklet.

Fall / Original Scot Song / Wrim-Wram-Wrom / Oboe Cop / Her Friends
        the Wolves / Dark Nova

        Notes:
This release is to LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN as GOLD IN THE METAL is to
HORSE ROTORVATOR - a collection of outtakes, oddities, etc.

        Limited edition of 2000 copies.

Mail order copies included a skull/Coil sticker and no song titles.
All other copies have a sticker on the back listing the titles and
other release information. Many of the song titles were incorrect,
however, as they were taken from an advance rough cassette and used
by World Serpent. The titles were corrected for the re-release
        edition listed below.

This release is also succeptable to the "disc rot" problem mentioned
in the notes for UNNATURAL HISTORY.

There was a bootleg edition of this release which can only be spotted
by checking the inner ring of the CD - the official release reads
        "LOCICD4 10204341 01 &" and "MADE IN THE U.K. BY PDO".

Around the time of the CD's original release, Coil issued a
newsletter stating that they would also be releasing a special vinyl
edition containing 45 minutes of the material from the CD, limited to
1000 numbered copies. This release was subsequently cancelled.

        Notes:
This second, unlimited edition was released because of the bootleg
edition mentioned above. The cover is different and several song
titles were corrected (although "Further" is mistitled "Futhur" on
the cover), but it's otherwise identical to the original release.

The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that it is limited to 500 copies.

        Notes:
As on the original vinyl release of HTDA, the track "Absolute

        silence.

The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. The cover is slightly
different from the official release - "COIL" is printed at the top
above the artwork. A logo printed on the cover claims that it is
        limited to 500 copies.

The first edition of 3000 copies comes with six stickers featuring
graphics and track titles. Some copies were sent out without the
        stickers by mistake.

The second edition comes with no stickers, but Coil felt it
retrospect that it seemed incomplete, so subsequent editions
include a CD booklet featuring the graphics and text from the

QUEENS OF THE CIRCULATING LIBRARY

        Queens of the Circulating Library

        Notes:
Part one of "a continually mutating series of circulating musickal
        compositions."

Initially imited to 2000 copies in a clear grey clamshell case,
sold at Coil's live performance as Time Machines at the Royal
Festival Hall in London on April 2nd, 2000. The performance featured
Peter Christopherson, John Balance, Thighpaulsandra and Simon Norris
(Cyclobe) and was entitled "The Industrial Use Of Semen Will
        Revolutionise The Human Race".

Copies remaining after the show were made available via World
Serpent, along with an additional 1500 copies packaged in a pink
        clamshell case

The music was created by Thighpaulsandra and John Balance, and
Thighpaulsandra's mother, opera singer Dorothy Lewis, recites the
lyrics especially written by John Balance for "her and for mothers

Something / Tiny Golden Books / Ether / Paranoid Inlay / An
Emergency / Where are You? / Batwings (A Limnal Hymn)

        Notes:
Initially available only via direct mail order from Coil. A
regular retail edition followed a couple of months later via World
        Serpent.

It was initially announced that the first 500 CD copies ordered
would include a bonus CD of new/unreleased material, but the demand
was so high that it was decided to include a bonus disc with all
mail order copies, both CD and vinyl. Information about this bonus
disc, COIL PRESENTS TIME MACHINES, appears below.

The inner ring of the CD is printed with the catalog number
GRAAL4CD, but the above catalog number is printed on the cover.

The vinyl features three sides of music, with an etched image of
the moon on the fourth side. There are several different editions:

        (1) 1000 copies on white vinyl (these are numbered, although
the numbering may not start at 1 as there are copies with
            numbers above 1000).
        (2) A second edition of 300 copies on white vinyl (numbered 1-300).
        (3) 100 copies with one record on blue vinyl and one on green. 36 of
            these were signed and numbered.
        (4) 60 signed and numbered copies on amethyst coloured vinyl packaged
in a white gatefold sleeve with a moon & trees picture attached
to the front, a handprint in off-white paint on the back, a note
saying that it is "suitable for framing (but beware of
sunlight!)", and two signed prints. The records themselves have
plain white labels, with gold leaf attached to the label on side
            four.
        (5) A special "Trauma" edition limited to 26 copies (lettered A to Z)
on white or amethyst vinyl in plain white covers smeared with John
Balance's own blood during a "psychotic/demonic episode". These
also contain the cover picture and prints from the amethyst edition
listed above. Initially, only 11 copies were to be sold with the
remainder being held by Coil in their personal archive, but the
edition was expanded due to high demand.

The Russian CD edition on ArsNova is unofficial.

        Notes:
A recording of Coil's live performance as Time Machines at the Royal
Festival Hall in London on April 2nd, 2000. The performance itself
was entitled "Time Machines from the Heart of Darkness" and was
given the catalogue number ESKATON 23, although that number was
later used for the MOON'S MILK (IN FOUR PHASES) 2xCD anthology.

Available only as a bonus disc with the first ordered copies of the
mail order release MUSICK TO PLAY IN THE DARK VOL. 2 (listed above).

        Notes:
Intitially made available at Coil's live appearance co-headlining
with Foetus at London's Royal Festival Hall on September 19th, 2000.
The live performance was entitled "Persistence Is All". A commercial
edition was issued via World Serpent the following week.

The disc has 23 tracks, with "Tunnel of Goats" split across tracks
        6 through 23.

The catalog number is the almost the same as the limited edition
COIL PRESENTS TIME MACHINES album listed above. This was presumably
        an oversight.

A GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS: A SILVER VOICE
CD 2001 Feelee FL 3182-2 RU

        The Dreamer is Still Asleep

        Notes:
The first of two anthology CDs created to mark Coil's live
performance in Moscow on September 15, 2001. Initially intended to
be limited to 1000 copies, it has since been repressed at least
        once.

This volume features a selection of melancholy and melodic pieces
from throughout Coil's career, along with the new track "A Cold
        Cell".

The English title given above is a loose translation of the
Russian title devised by Ivan Pavlov of COH.

The tracks "Are You Shivering?" and "Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)"
are listed in the wrong order on the cover. The track listing above
        is the correct one.

The catalog number above is the correct one which appears on the
cover and engraved on the inner ring of the disc. The incorrect
number FL 3181-2 is printed on the disc by mistake.

The contents of this disc (along with its companion release
A GUIDE FOR FINISHERS: A GOLDEN HAIR) were released in 2002 as
the double CD THE GOLDEN HARE WITH A VOICE OF SILVER.

Staircase / Red Skeletons / Scope / Solar Lodge / Blue Rats /
A.Y.O.R. / The First Five Minutes After Violent Death

        Notes:
The second of two anthology CDs created to mark Coil's live
performance in Moscow on September 15, 2001. Initially intended to
be limited to 1000 copies, it has since been repressed at least
        once.

This volume features a selection of aggressive and noisy pieces
from throughout Coil's career, along with the new track "A.Y.O.R.".

The English title given above is a loose translation of the
Russian title devised by Ivan Pavlov of COH. The Russian word for
"finisher" suggests both suicide and cumming.

The contents of this disc (along with its companion release
A GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS: A SILVER VOICE) were released in 2002 as

        CD 1994 Mute/Elektra 79337-2 US

        Notes:
This is the soundtrack to Derek Jarman's "Blue", a film which
consisted entirely of a blue screen with music and narration. The
disc contains the complete soundtrack including all spoken parts.

The Mute/Interchord edition has all of the narration translated to
German and a slightly different cover, but the music is the same.

According to the liner notes, Coil's contribution to the soundtrack
is entitled "Disco Hospital", but it is not the track of the same
name that appears on LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN. Two versions of the track
were released as the THEMES FOR DEREK JARMAN'S "BLUE" 7", and they
also appear on the UNNATURAL HISTORY II CD.

CD 1997 Sub Rosa SR114 BE

        Notes:
The track "Kala" has music by Coil with vocals by Lori Carson.

Coil's music was originally given to Laswell for an earlier project
but the deadline was missed, so they used it themselves as the basis
for the "Stoned Circular" tracks on the Black Light District album
A THOUSAND LIGHTS IN A DARKENED ROOM. They later approved it's use
by Laswell on this new project, but were unhappy with it being
released on Sub Rosa due to a previous contract dispute, so they
have made it clear that this is not a true collaboration.

        CD 2000 Soleilmoon/Cacciocavallo CAD 04 US

        Notes:
This release features both previously released and new

"Many Hands", a track which originally appeared with the title
"Various Hands" on the NIGHTMARE CULTURE EP listed above under the
project name Sickness of Snakes. This track also appears on the
        Coil anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY.

The album was supposedly inspired by a Leonard Nimoy record of the
same name, with the cover being of a similar design but replacing
        Nimoy's face with Rice's.

LP edition is limited to 992 copies.

with worms)", "The Downward Spiral (a gilded sickness)" and "TDS
(fullblown)". It's very likely that these mixes (or elements of
them) are the ones that ended up on this release, albeit with
        different mix names.

This album features various artists remixing tracks from the Chris
& Cosey backcatalogue, with the liner notes having a cocktail party
theme. The notes for this track read: "From 1982's TRANCE, originally
'Cowboys in Cuba' in its virgin state, this Bangkok mix takes the
same fine ingredients and adds 151 proof electronics. Savour the
        deep, long lasting 'mescal' effects".

as the track "An Apology" which is an answering machine message
from John Balance apologizing for their remix being late.

The Staalplaat edition was not widely released due to a contract
dispute between PLU and the label. When PLU left the label, the
few copies which had been pressed were released, but officially,
it was deleted and withdrawn. This version included a full disc
        of extra material.

        MP3 2004 Mute Z MUTEL 08 UK

        Notes:
In 1993, Coil were commissioned to do a remix of Depeche Mode's
"Rush" (which they subtitled The Black Sun Remix). When plans to
release "Rush" as a single were scrapped in favour of the track
"Condemnation", Coil's mix was set aside. It was made available
briefly as an MP3 file on the Coil website, and subsequently
appeared on various file sharing networks and bootleg CD/CDR
collections of rare Depeche Mode tracks. It was finally offically
released as part of this MP3 album that was made available in
conjunction with Depeche Mode's REMIXES 81-04 release.

Coil: MOTOR INDUSTRY
7" 1983 Northampton Wood Hill Records HAV-01 UK

        Motor Industry / Alcoholic Stork

        Notes:
This release is listed in "The International Discography Of The New
Wave" (George & DeFoe, 1982/83), a very complete (albeit error-
ridden) book on punk & early new wave. However, it is not a release
by Balance and Christopherson, and is another band entirely.

Solo release from Marc Almond's partner in Soft Cell. Danny Hyde is

        Notes:
The track "Rule Again" is credited "music by Coil, lyrics by Death In
June". It is actually the Coil track "Here to Here" from the
compilation THE BEAST 666 with the lyrics to Death In June's "Rule
Again" being sung over top. This was not authorized by either Coil

Coil is not directly involved in this release, but the track

        Notes:
The track "The Seven Seals are Revealed at the End of Time as Seven
Bows: The Bloodbow, the Pissbow, the Painbow, the Faminebow, the
Deathbow, the Angerbow, the Hohohobow" is mentioned in the liner
notes as being "written as a sequel to John Balance's introduction
to Coil's HORSE ROTORVATOR album". Balance also appears on this
record as a member of Current 93, as he does on many of the band's

        Notes:
Coil is not directly involved in this release, but the track "No
Skin" is largely composed of samples from the Coil track "Nasa-Arab".

        Notes:
Once again, Coil is not directly involved, but several versions of
"No Skin" appear here, including one (the "Aural Circumcision Mix")
which appears to be composed entirely of samples from "Nasa-Arab".

        Notes:
This release features a track entitled "Null Tributary" which
is a remix/reinterpretation of the song "Dark River" from the Coil
album LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN. Limited to around 50 copies.

This track also appears on Thread's OBSIDIAN MONARCH 7" single
listed above in the Collaborations section of the discography.

        Notes:
This single-sided record features a 23 minute guitar drone peice
which has nothing to do with Coil, but the blank side of the
record is labeled as a cover of "Absolute Elsewhere", the blank
side of Coil's HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS 12".

The record is pressed on clear vinyl and is limited to 300 copies
with two different label designs (150 of each).

        Notes:
While not 100% confirmed, the remix by Grooverider of the Stone
Roses track "Fools Gold" that appears on these releases includes a
sample which sounds very much like a vocal snippet from Coil's
        "Windowpane".

The Great White Hype: SCATOLOGY
CDR 1999 Record Label Records RLR 0.1 E -21 US

Ubu Noir Sex with Christian Deor / Panic Attack in the Ghetto / At
the Hard-on in it All / Tenderness of Pigs / I Got the Clap / Aqua
Regis & Kathy Lee / A Bumpin Bluntin Party at the Solar Lodge /
Godhead=Deathhead=Givemehead / The Black Pantha Cathedral Engine in
        Compton / A Restless Arrest / Tainted Love / S is for Shit / Who'll
Tell When the Niggers Fell / Protect Yourself

        Notes:
Quite possibly the strangest Coil-related release, this is a
"sidereal hip-hop" album that samples a lot of the Coil SCATOLOGY
album and features sloppy freestyle raps about Coil and related
subjects. The cover features the same design as the original Coil
release, with the photo of the bum in the inverted cross replaced
with the body of a naked black woman.

The Great White Hype has also recorded similar albums "dedicated"
to Throbbing Gristle (20 RAP/HOUSE GREATS) and Einsturzende
        Neubauten (DRAWINGS OF PATIENT O.G.).

Surgeon: FORCE + FORM
        CD 1999 Tresor 56117-2 DE
        2xLP 1999 Tresor 56117-6 DE

Remnants Of What Once Was / Black Jackal Throwbacks / Returning
to the Purity of Current / At The Heart of it All

        Notes:
While this album by minimal techno artist Anthony Child aka
Surgeon has no direct Coil connection, it's worth mentioning here
due to it's title and track names. Specifically:

        - "Force + Form" is the name of the label on which Coil released
          much of their early material
        - the phrase "Remnants Of What Once Was" appears in the liner notes
          of GOLD IS THE METAL
        - the phrase "Black Jackal Throwbacks" was etched into the run-out
groove on the ANAL STAIRCASE 12"
        - "Returning to the Purity of Current" was the subtitle of the
latest CD reissue of GOLD IS THE METAL
        - "At The Heart of it All" is the name of a track on Coil's
          SCATOLOGY album

Child has discussed the influence of Coil and other early industrial
artists in interviews, so it's likely that these similarities were
        intentional.

There is also a companion 12" release entitled FORCE + FORM REMAKES
featuring remixed versions of tracks from the album.
