MATCH REPORT

KEVIN Keegan could not find the win he had been hoping for on his return to Tyneside as Bolton Wanderers did their best to spoil the Geordie Messiah's homecoming.

The visitors got men behind the ball throughout the game as United were left frustrated with chances at a premium for both sides.

But it could have been the Trotters who snatched a late three points had it not been for an excellent point-blank save by Shay Given from Jlloyd Samuel's close range effort in the dying seconds.

That was after the hosts had laid siege to the Bolton goal in search of a second-half winner, N'Zogbia and Milner both seeing shots blocked by a resilient Wanderers rearguard.

The game will be best remembered for the hair-raising reception King Kev received before kick-off but, unlike his previous return to Gallowgate back in 1992, the Geordies were unable to get the win they had so badly craved.

SECOND HALF ACTION (click refresh for latest) ...

There will be three minutes added time.

90min - Davies protects the ball next to the right corner flag and Enrique concedes a flag-kick after jostling with the striker. The cross drops to Samuel at the near post and it takes a great stop from Given with his shins to deny the sub snatching a late three points for the visitors.

86min - Carr zips another ball forward this time looking for the run of Owen, Andy O'Brien is there for Bolton to deny the skipper a clean run on goal and slides to concede a corner. N'Zogbia's deep delivery is dealt with by the Bolton defence and the Trotters clear.

84min - Carr plays a diagonal ball forward from deep looking for Ameobi, it's a decent knock and the United striker gets there ahead of Michalik but can only steer his header wide of Jaaskelainen's target and away for a goal-kick.

81min - Milner has switched flanks and crosses looking for Owen, Andy O'Brien reads the delivery and heads away for a corner. United quickly work it short and an angle opens up for Milner to have a go, he shoots low but Joey O'Brien is in the way and hacks away from in front of goal.

80min - Kazenga LuaLua comes on with Damien Duff making way.

79min - Jlloyd Samuel replaces Matt Taylor - Gary Megson perhaps wary of the full-back's booking.

78min - Milner has three goes at getting a cross over from the right before Taylor eventually concedes a corner. N'Zogbia takes high but Ameobi's headed win drifts away for a goal-kick.

77min  - Matt Taylor is late on Steven Taylor and, while there is very little contact, it's still enough to earn a booking for the Bolton debutant.

76min - Tamir Cohen replaces former Sunderland midfielder Gavin McCann who receives the expected barracking from the home crowd.

74min - Enrique asks questions of the Bolton backline with a high ball into the area from the left-flank, Gardner is right underneath it and takes no chances by conceding the corner. N'Zogbia's delivery is low and Bolton clear at the near post.

73min - There's a bit of needle creeping into the game as Michalik claims he was caught by Ameobi's elbow following a challenge in the air.

70min - The Geordies are camped in Bolton's half but can't quite find that much-coveted opener.

67min - Ivan Campo replaces skipper Kevin Nolan with the Spaniard taking the armband.

65min - Still the Magpies press for that opener and Jaaskelainen has to scramble to palm over his crossbar after Milner's right-wing cross had caught out the Finnish stopper. Bolton clear from N'Zogbia's flag-kick.

64min - Milner finds space on the right and is urged forward by the home crowd, he takes the ball on before sending over a cross looking for the run of Rozehnal, the delivery is slightly behind the Czech but he manages to get a header on goal, unfortunately for United the effort clears the crossbar.

62min - The Toon Army are on their feet appealing for a penalty as Gardner slides to nick away from Ameobi inside the aea - replays show the Jamaican got clear contact on the ball and Wiley rightly waves away the protests.

59min - It's all Newcastle at the moment and Michalik has to be alert to guide a Taylor's long pump downfield back to Jaaskelainen with Ameobi lurking.

58min - The hosts have a free-kick in a dangerous position after Andy O'Brien is ajudged to have climbed on the shoulders of Ameobi. N'Zogbia takes left-footed looking for Jaaskelainen's top corner but the effort clears both the Bolton wall and the crossbar by a good couple of feet.

57min - Duff is booked for an incident on the left-wing but to be honest we can't see a reason why - possibly dissent.

56min - A clever turn by Milner sees him escape the challenge of Nolan 30 yards out, the Bolton skipper can't resist having a tug at the young winger as he gets away and is booked by Alan Wiley. Michalik heads clear from N'Zogbia's centre.

54min - The Geordies have started the second period with far more purpose and N'Zogbia sees a 25-yard strike clatter into the backside of Owen and Bolton clear.

51min - United are on the attack and the ball spins free off Ameobi on the edge of the area, Milner is quickest to react and tries to steer low into Jaaskelainen's bottom corner, Joey O'Brien throws himself in the way to block and the ball again runs free on the right, Carr clips a cross to the back post where Duff retrieves before rolling to N'Zogbia, the French winger digs out a far post ball looking for Ameobi but Michalik gets there first to head clear as far as Carr lurking on the edge, the crowd are willing the full-back to have a go but he fires high into the Gallowgate End.

49min - Steven Taylor tries to get Ameobi away with a long pump downfield but the striker is denied a run on goal by a linesman's flag.

United get the second-half started with neither side having made any changes.

FIRST HALF ACTION

There will be one minute added time.

43min - Gardner plays a quick one-two with Davies 30 yards out and tries to force his way into the United area, a strong Taylor challenge thwarts the Jamaican but the ball runs for Davies, again it is Taylor who blocks just inside the box before Stephen Carr completes the clearance.

38min - Magpie hearts are in mouths as Enrique's attempted clearance spoons high in the air, Matt Taylor is right underneath the ball as it drops and heads for goal when really he should have tried to control as Given is able to gather with ease.

33min - United break on the right through Milner, the Trotters are quick to get men back and deny Ameobi space after the ball is worked to him in a central position, the 26-year-old does well to work a yard with a quick double-touch and sees a snap shot deflected behind off Joey O'Brien. N'Zogbia's high cross drops for Ameobi on the penalty spot, he tries to dig out a shot but Bolton have too many bodies in attendance and hack clear.

31min - Ameobi holds off the attention of O'Brien on the edge of the area before rolling back for Rozehnal, the Czech star decides to have a go but slices well wide.

28min - Owen is checked by Joey O'Brien 25 yards out and the hosts have a free-kick. N'Zogbia again takes this time looking for the run of Taylor who has crept in at the far post, Matt Taylor reads the ball and concedes a corner from the head of the United centre-back. Ameobi is penalised for a pull from N'Zogbia's delivery.

24min - Rozehnal spears a delightful pass from halfway in-behind the Trotters backline looking for Michael Owen, the United skipper has stolen a march on marker Andy O'Brien but can't quite kill the ball at his feet, Duff is supporting on the left and receives from Owen, the Irish winger crosses from the by-line but Steinsson is recovering to block and the Magpies have a corner. N'Zogbia whips to the near post where McCann heads away, the ball balloons in the air and drops for Enrique who decides to have a crack first-time, it's not a bad try but is always going wide of Jaaskelainen's near post.

18min - From the same attack the Trotters win a corner on the left which is worked short, United only have Duff in attendance and Guthrie is able to slip the ball to Taylor who has gone for the return from the flag-kick, the deutant has the whole goal to aim at from the angle of the box but screws his effort away for a throw-in on the opposite flank - what a waste.

17min - Rozehnal loses possession cheaply on halfway but does well to recover and stops McCann in his tracks as he advanced down the left-wing.

12min - Milner is full of purpose on the right and wins a flag-kick off Taylor. N'Zogbia's cross evades everyone and is retrieved by Duff on the opposite flank, he tries to work a yard past Steinsson to deliver but the Icelandic defender denies him space to do so, eventually the ball is layed back to the supporting Enrqiue but United can't make anything of it and Bolton are able to clear.

10min - Ameobi does well to win back possession for United on the right and slips a pass wide for Milner, he is the taken out by the sliding challenge of Taylor and the Magpies have a free-kick. N'Zogbia goes across to the East Stand touchline to take and whips a ball into a crowded penalty area, Joey O'Brien is the visitors' first line of defence and heads away.

6min - Given is again called into action as this time he saves low to his right after Nolan tried his luck from range.

5min - Bolton have another corner on the left which Taylor takes. United fail to clear and after a game of head tennis Andy O'Brien turns the ball goalwards from the edge of the area, it's not a bad effort but Given gets down low to save.

4min - United's first attack sees Milner try to get Ameobi away down the left, Michalik is tracking the striker and concedes a throw. Carr takes quickly and the ball is worked to N'Zogbia who sees his 30-yard shot charged down by Joey O'Brien.

1min - The visitors win a corner from kick-off as Enrique charges down Davies' attempted cross from the right. Matt Taylor takes deep and Ameobi heads behind at the far post. Taylor swaps flanks to take from the left and this time United clearly properly.

Bolton eventually get the game underway attacking the Gallowgate End.

St.James' Park is absolutely buzzing ... The PA announcer has been drowned out by the Toon Army as a chant of "Keegan, Keegan" rings out around the ground.

TEAM NEWS

KEVIN Keegan recalls Shola Ameobi to the starting XI for his first game since taking over the Magpie reins for a second time this week.

The Geordie bench is made up of Academy graduates Andy Carroll, Kazenga LuaLua, David Edgar and James Troisi.
