Program Name: Practical Nurse

Program Description: Do you enjoy caring for and assisting others? Practical Nurses work with other health team members to provide personal care for people in need. If you are looking for a challenging, health-based career in a fast-paced environment, then becoming a Practical Nurse could be an ideal profession for you. Take this program and enter into your career as a highly in-demand health professional!

Students who would like to decrease the workload in this very intensive two-year program are encouraged to complete some of the university transfer courses before starting the program. Please refer to the University Studies section in the calendar for more information.

Upon successful completion of the Practical Nurse Program and the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam, graduates are eligible to become licensed through the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Practical nursing is a self-regulating profession with a unique body of knowledge, standards of practice, its own code of ethics, clearly defined competencies and a societal contract to provide safe, quality, holistic patient care.

Note: Not all of our campuses are open to Year 1 students; some campuses only offer courses to second year students. The Slave Lake and Grande Prairie campuses are open to both Year 1 and Year 2 students.

Employment Opportunities: As a Licensed Practical Nurse students can expect to be employed in hospitals, continuing care facilities, doctor's offices, and community programs.
