Program Description: |
Do you enjoy caring for and assisting others? Practical Nurses work with other health team members to provide personal care for people in need. If you are looking for a challenging, health-based career in a fast-paced environment, then becoming a Practical Nurse could be an ideal profession for you. Take this program and enter into your career as a highly in-demand health professional! Students who would like to decrease the workload in this very intensive two-year program are encouraged to complete some of the university transfer courses before starting the program. Please refer to the University Studies section in the calendar for more information.
Upon successful completion of the Practical Nurse Program and the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam, graduates are eligible to become licensed through the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Practical nursing is a self-regulating profession with a unique body of knowledge, standards of practice, its own code of ethics, clearly defined competencies and a societal contract to provide safe, quality, holistic patient care.
Note: Not all of our campuses are open to Year 1 students; some campuses only offer courses to second year students. The Slave Lake and Grande Prairie campuses are open to both Year 1 and Year 2 students. |

Entrance Requirements: |
Applicants must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent; OR have mature student status as defined by Northern Lakes College. Credits in the following courses, or their equivalent, are required by all applicants: * Biology 30 (60%) or credit in ANPY 1000 or equivalent; * English 30-1 or English 30 (60%), or English 30-2 or English 33 (70%), or qualify as a mature student as defined in the Northern Lakes College Calendar and have an assessed English equivalency; * Pure Math 20 or Math 20 (50%), or Applied Math 20 or Math 23 (60%). * Applicants must also demonstrate good physical and emotional health, and have fluency in English. Students for whom English is a second language must complete a skills appraisal assessment. * Immunizations must be up-to-date and applicants must provide a current criminal record check. Note: students without a clear criminal record may not be able to complete the practicum requirements of the program. * A current Standard First Aid certificate and CPR Basic Rescuer (Level C or 3) or a CPR for Health Care Professionals certificate is required prior to starting clinical courses. * Students who do not meet the Biology 30 requirement may be granted conditional acceptance if all other entrance requirements are met, but must apply to the Dean of University Studies and Health Professions for conditional accepance and must complete ANPY 1000 in the first term. |

Program Delivery: |
The program is offered using a mix of distributed delivery strategies. These include: • computer conferencing, • videoconferencing, • self-directed study, • instructor led face-to-face classes and labs, and • clinical practicums.
The distributed delivery methods allows students to pursue their educational goals in selected communities, however, students in the program are likely to have to relocate for short periods of time to another community in order to complete the clinical requirements of the program. |

Transferability: |
The Practical Nurse Program is transferable to Bow Valley College, Norquest College and some universities.
