Admittedly, I was nonplussed with 2005's "Shadows are Security" from metalcore heavyweights AS I LAY DYING. It is not that it is a sub par album, and it is better than many similar albums in what has become a morass of mediocrity, but seemed to lack the vibrancy and sharp edges of its predecessor, "Frail Words Collapse". Then again, it is also an album that just as many critics found to have numerous redeeming values. Considering that it went on to sell a whopping 275,000 copies meant that fans had no problems with it either. Regardless of the opinions held by folks of said album, I find "An Ocean Between Us" to be a well-rounded and often thrashy metalcore album, as the band has struck an effective balance between aggression and accessible melodies.

The most pleasant surprise about "An Ocean Between Us" is the guitar work of Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa. A ton of great, modern thrash riffs are found throughout the disc, "Comfort Betrays" and "The Sound of Truth" just two of several prime examples, the latter also featuring a hot solo. The driving rhythms and powerful licks are certain to get even the most jaded fan of heavy music finding a reason to head bang. Front man Tim Lambesis' harsh vocals are as good as they've ever sounded as well. The production team of Adam Dutkiewicz and AS I LAY DYING, with Colin Richardson credited with the final mix, has created a sound that hits hard and accentuates the guitars.

Though the growl-verse/clean-chorus formula has been driven into the ground, AS I LAY DYING does it exceedingly well on "An Ocean Between Us". Songs like "Forsaken" and "Nothing Left" feature surprisingly catchy, clean vocal choruses, the melody-drenched singing coming courtesy of bassist Josh Gilbert. It is the kind of balancing act that KILLSWITCH ENGAGE does so well, even though I tend to find the last couple of albums from KE lacking the infectiousness of the "Alive or Just Breathing Days".

Though guilty of being one of the AS I LAY DYING naysayers since the "Shadows are Security" days, I cannot deny the quality levels achieved on "An Ocean Between Us". It is about as good as it gets in the metalcore arena. A #8 debut on the Billboard chart would seem to indicate that the fans agree.

For the record, yes, I have heard the album ... and what mystifies me is how you idiots defending it can't realize that is, in fact, IS the same bland, redundant metalcore that's been going on for the last couple years.

Let's go over the metalcore checklist shall we ...

Tons of breakdowns: Check
Sing-along choruses: Check
Abuse of Open E: Check
Hardcore vocals: Check
Riffs a 15 year old could learn in 2 minutes: Check

Hmm, smells like metalcore ... sounds like metalcore. By Zeus' Beard it must be Metalcore!

And what burns me the most is that those no-talent excuses for musicians actaully said they were trying to jump the sinking ship that is metalcore for something different, and that instead of actually doing that, they relied on the ignorance of their fans to eat up their complete bullshit and believe what they put out wasn't the same thing they've heard before.

Aside from Son1k having appeared to have written his last post using a thesaurus, I'd like to take note on a few things he said that WERE true, though pompous.

First, I missed whatever post someone tried to acknowledge this as something that isn't metalcore. Besides the fact that they are thrashier now they are still metalcore. I'm not a metalcore fan for the generic reasons stated by the 'haters' however As I Lay Dying has managed to not get on my nerves because they try and mature unlike bands like Haste The Day, A Skylit Drive...All of which, if I may, have three words in their band name. It's curse.

These dudes can play thrash all day long, it's stupid to argue that they suck for one reason or another because in the past they've derived a lot of enfluence from european death metal then lain down their breakdowns to water it down into what you may refer to as "a heap of shit." But a good number of the hailed death metal bands reviewed on here aren't poster children for originallity but you're still stroking your scrotum the first time the vocallist hits a 'brutal' low note.

You're as unoriginal and uninspired as the next kid. Get over it.

Conductor: Did you even LISTEN to the album!? There's about a minute of thrash on any given song, and that's being generous.

Pulpzilla: Not to sound arrogant but Yes, I do play an instrument and Yes, I can play guitar better than these guys. Almost anyone can pick up a guitar speed pick Open E then play an arpeggio on A real fast, that's pretty simple stuff.

But, ok ok ok, I'll concede a couple points that they actually dropped some solos on here. Not great ones, but solos nonetheless.

Funeral_Maker: They aren't progressing as a band any more than any other generic metalcore band. What did they do different on this album? Hmm, a few solos and they have even had those on the last one they put out.
Outside of that I heard nothing new, nothing innovative, and certainly nothing overly amazing.
(And I'd like you to find where I fellate death metal bands like I bash metalcore)

Man, you guys eat up whatever bullshit anyone tells you.

I'm sorry, I refuse to think of this CD as anything other than metalcore without breakdowns (and don't even get me started on the whole half-hearted Thrash revival thing).

Fact: This CD is only one notch better than Shadows Are Security, which is saying something because there aren't many records that I hold in more contempt than Shadows Are Security.

Fact: Clean singing bores me unless a band exclusively does it. Not only that, but the fact that none of these goofy-haired tits can carry a goddamned tune. This is the number one reason why I physically cannot enjoy this record. I suggest this band takes the money they've robbed from half a million scene kids and take some motherfucking vocal lessons.

Fact: This marks the second straight album wherein they have not even come peripherally close to matching the potential they showed with Frail Words Collapse. Thus, they show themselves to be a one-trick pony and are no longer worthy of my time and effort to pirate their music. This shitshow gets a two, but only because I again reiterate that it is slightly better than their last outing.

I am one of the main people that bag this shit band on this site because they are a horrible excuse for a band, and to say that I'm close minded in music is very ignorant. If you want to hear good music check out Alcest, Agalloch, Novembre, Ulver, Tenhi, Empyrium, Katatonia, Opeth, Vinterriket, Isis, Akercocke, Sargeist, Horna, those are just some of the more metal type bands I listen to. Who's to say that somebody cannot like Novembre, Opeth, Katatonia as well as liking this album? Saying that would make you close-minded. Maybe if you judged this band by this album instead of their previous works your opinion would differ.

I was proving a point to the other kid that people bash this band because they suck not because they are close minded.

Great album, which i was quite surprised by.
An improvment from last album or just as good.

At a time when even bands with the word “metal” in their names dismiss the greatest rock genre ever, MANOWAR’s music will never be tainted by trends or diluted by outside pressure. The band’s members remain steadfast in their resolve: to deliver to their ever-growing international legions of die-hard fans the brand of metal they demand to hear.

Does it really matter if it is thrash or not? This cd rocks hard! Its still the same old As I Lay Dying. Only this time they decided to add a little trash. Leave 'em alone. I think its an improvment. Picky bitches...

"Not to sound arrogant but Yes, I do play an instrument and Yes, I can play guitar better than these guys. Almost anyone can pick up a guitar speed pick Open E then play an arpeggio on A real fast, that's pretty simple stuff."

You obviously don't play guitar well at all, or you have played for less than a few hours... Because if you did, you'd know after about 0.5 seconds into the intro to the title track that AILD obviously doesn't even TUNE to E (They tune to dropped-C). Furthermore, "speed pick open e then play an arpeggio on A real fast?" I hate to break it to you, dumbass, but not once does AILD do this in any song on An Ocean Between Us. The closest thing they do is bouncing off the low C string onto the G string (Just so you know, this is the 5th string in Dropped C, since you seem pretty incapable) while hitting seconds, thirds, and fifths in scalar patterns, which usually sounds pretty good.

You are officially musically retarded, because you obviously don't know the meaning of MUSICALITY over TECHNICALITY. What does this mean in music, exactly? It means that some guy could play a nice slow blues solo and it could be amazing and breathtaking, and the crowd would love him, but some metal schlub could play boring scalar runs at 16th notes at 200bpm for a minute or two and no one would lift an eyelid, even though he practiced it for countless hours on end. (Case in point, look at Dragonforce vs. David Gilmour. Who was more famous? Who had the album which holds the record for the most time on the Billboard top 40? And most of Pink Floyd's songs are pretty slow.)

You are a completely hypocritical noob just trying to validate yourself to redeem for your lack of skill. Example? "Speed Pick." You act like you know how to play guitar (which you don't). If you did, you'd know it's called "Tremolo Picking." If you want to participate in musical elitism, at LEAST spend a few bucks for lessons or read something online before you open your obviously inbred mouth.

"Man, you guys eat up whatever bullshit anyone tells you." Well, how about you eat THIS^^^?

It's pretty good I hadn't heard any of their other stuff because everyones talk about it (at least the people I talk to) but I got the album of a friend anyways.

Nothing Left had me jaw dropped the album just blew me away but it seems that every time I listen to the album since it seems not as good and it's flaws are presented.

Still I think it's a great album but isn't up there on the albums of the year.....

I feel that they've only gotten better over time. I was a moderate fan of their first album and I've only come to enjoy them more as they come on the years.
