Update on Office 2008 progress!

Last Wednesday was our general “ZBB” target for the Office 2008 project, a major milestone on the road to release and something we’ve been pushing hard for over the past several months. We saw some fantastic surging by the development team to clear out

Silverlight Excitement

Are you excited about Silverlight? I am. In case you haven't heard, Silverlight is a new rich internet application platform developed by Microsoft with support on both Windows and Macintosh systems. It's pretty awesome. The Silverlight demos presented

Get converted

As previously announced, and as indicated by the lower frequency in blogcasting here, everyone at MacBU is exceedingly busy completing Office 2008, which is on track for release later this year. This work is our primary focus, and is the largest undertaking

Converters Coming! Free and (Fairly) Fast.

There's been some pretty alarmist news stories this morning ( apcstart.com ; CrunchGear ) about file format converters and Office for Mac. Because some of these stories seem designed more to inflame than inform, I want to reiterate our previously reported

Living complexity

Brad's Carl Sagan-style post on code size stirs up some familiar questions about complexity management here at MacBU. With every release of Office, we remove, rewrite and add new code. Often we can remove significant amounts of code without losing functionality

It's all in the numbers ...

A friend of mine and I were shooting the ... breeze (freaking ‘G' ratings for blogs) and he was asking me when the next version of Office was coming out. Now being the wise Microsoft spin doctor that I am, and having spent numerous hours being brainwashed

Closet space, the final frontier

The last event of C4 was a visit to Chicago's Adler Planetarium, with a special behind the scenes (and beneath the stairs) tour of the computer room that runs the video conferencing room and the CyberSpace classroom. Well, "room" is charitable. "Closet"

Checking out and checking in

C4 is over and I'm back in Seattle, which means these last two posts will be Almost Live-blogging C4. I get about 60 emails every day from a robot. Well, not a robot that moves around, but our version control system -- the server that manages our project's

Film at Eleven

It's Olof again, liveblogging from C4. John Gruber took us on a tour of Apple User Interface last night, and talked about consistency and uniformity. But he really got the thought provokage started with the observation "Designing an app is like directing

C4 is Teh Bomb

Hi - I'm Olof. I guess I'm the first "guest blogger" on MacMojo. I'm a developer on the Mac Office team, and for the weekend, I'm in Chicago at C4. I have a really strong sense of what C4 is going to be like, even though I've never been to one before.

Office Delay? Ya Don't Say.

No, seriously, you don't say (or shouldn't), because it isn't true. Over the last few days, some Mac sites have been reporting that the Universal Binary version of Office for Mac (officially unnamed, but currently code-named Office 12) has been delayed,

Incremental mojo

Hello, another introduction for you – my name is Geoff Price, and I’m the Product Unit Manager for MacBU in Redmond. This is MS speak for saying I have responsibility for the core engineering teams here (development, testing, program management and user

On the power of a small team -or- Why MacBU testing rocks

Geez, now I have to follow up David's awesomely funny entry about the food alias with my dry post on testing. One of the first classes I took after starting here was called “Testing at Microsoft for New SDETs.” This class was full of about 25 people who

Let's go way back

It's Schwieb again, this time with a look back deep into MacBU history. No, not any public history -- I'll talking about my own history in MacBU. Brad Post's blog entries about tracking down gnarly bugs made me remember a particular problem I worked on

Bugs, how I love them ...

I love hunting them down and killing them. Hunting down and killing the developer who caused the bug would be just as much fun if it weren’t illegal in every country in the world, that and programmers would probably be an extinct species if every programmer
