MNEMONCS: A system for remembering

Welcome to Stuy Cubed, a website dedicated to the Mnemonics public art project, a.k.a. the "Memory Cubes." Mnemonics was commissioned by The Battery Park City Authority in conjunction with The Percent for Art Program of the City of New York, Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Department of Education. It was created over a period of four years for Stuyvesant High School's new building by artists Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel.

Mnemonics, completed in1992, is dedicated to cherishing specific moments in time at Stuyvesant, and sparking curiosity about the world beyond. The work is made up of over 400 clear glass blocks that house fragments of history, both from the school and from the world.

Each cube is unique, containing artifacts ranging from a bottle of (melted) snow from Mt. Fuji to an official piece of evidence from Ground Zero from the first World Trade Center incident, collected by the class of 1993 from the FBI. In cubes inscribed with the years 1904 to 1991, the artists created 88 collages from memorabilia contributed by Stuyvesant High School alumni. So as to create a tradition, empty cubes were installed throughout the entire new building, each inscribed with a year from 1992 to 2080. These are to be filled with original assemblages of objects by future graduating classes. The idea is to leave something significant and unique to your class behind that will trigger your memories in the future.

This Web site, Stuy Cubed, is your invitation to experience and contribute to the history contained in Mnemonics - the contents of each cube tell a story, and contain clues to the journey and legacy of Stuyvesant and to places all over the world. The site will also lead you to the instructions for filling your class's own cube.

The Mnemonics project gives you the chance to preserve what you think is important. What do you feel is worthy of remembrance?
