Wrestlers ready to rumble
St. Xavier High School is set for a busy weekend of sports action, highlighted by the annual St. Xavier Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 5.
Junior Jacob Farber, wrestling at 112 pounds, is among the favorites for the Bombers. Farber, junior John Gallagher (135), senior Lou Carraher (152), and senior Andrew Carpenter (285) each are ranked in the top 16 of the state for their respective weight classes according to the web page Wrestling411USA.com.
Bomber grapplers will square off against athletes from Vandalia Butler, Edgewood, Lakota East, Mt. Healthy, Oak Hills, Ryle (Ky.) and Simon Kenton (Ky.) high schools. Action begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Berning Gymnasium with the finals tentatively scheduled to begin at approximately 4 p.m.
Wrestlers aren’t the only athletes in action this weekend as the varsity basketball team plays in a benefit game on the road against Princeton High School Friday, Jan. 4. Proceeds from the game go to the Brewer Children Education Fund, supporting the daughters of late Princeton head coach Bill Brewer, a former GCL colleague at Roger Bacon.
The basketball game also promotes the Ohio High School Athletic Association Foundation, one of five such games across the state this season. The OHSAA Foundation provides scholarships and leadership training to student-athletes across Ohio.
The AquaBombers swim team – coming off a Jan. 3 home dual meet against University School - will be tri-locating this weekend. Segments of the squad appear in three different meets on Saturday. St. X swims at 9 a.m. against Centerville on the road, against Louisville St. Xavier at 1 p.m. at the University of Louisville and at 2 p.m. at Princeton High School.
In ice hockey, the Bombers play Louisville Trinity at 6: 30 p.m. Friday at Northlands and are back on the ice at 7:15 p.m. Saturday against Lexington Catholic at Goggin Arena in Oxford.
In bowling, the Bombers were in action Jan. 3 in a home match at Brentwood Bowl against Elder High School (X Wins! Click Here) and won’t return to the lanes again until a Jan. 10 match against Moeller High School at Crossgate Lanes.
