Historic Season Comes to a Close...

The Bowling Bombers traveled to Middletown and Eastern Lanes on Saturday for the Southwest District Finals. Twenty teams were competing for the top 5 spots and the right to go to the State Final.

The Bomber day started out well as the team jumped out of the starting blocks with a team score of 1052. However, scores were high and even though it is a 210 average per boy the score was only good for 6th place in the first game. Leading the way in the first game were Sophomores David Weiskittel (247), T.J. Kathman (237), and Chris Weber (216).

The second game was probably the best all-around game of the season but also the cruelest. Bomber after Bomber pounded the pocket during game two. In fact, only 8 shots (out of 57 attempts) during the ten frames did not end up in the 1,3 pocket. However, stubborn pins (the other opponent) had their way and lowered the score. This game probably should have been an 1150 or higher but the final score only totaled a 1027. High scores for game two were turned in by Senior Jason Moore (215), Kathman (214), Sophomore Kevin Justice (206) and Weber (204).

The last game of the 3-game series didn't start out well. After the first five frames the boys in royal blue and black found themselves about 150 pins under the 200 average. During the second half of the game, the Bombers were able to muster somewhat of a comeback and ended with a 949 (51 pins under the 200 average). No Bomber was able to crack the 200 mark in game three.

The bowlers that averaged over 200 for the 3 game series were T.J. Kathman (642), David Weiskittel (622), Chris Weber (608).

After the first three games the Bombers were in 8th place but only 95 pins from the coveted 5th place going into the 10-game baker round.

The first two games of baker were solid 180 games. During the 3rd game of baker the message, "today is not your day," was quite evident. For during this 3rd game of baker the Bombers left back-to-back pocket 7,10 splits only to have another pocket 7, 10 split a few frames later. These unconvertible spares made for a disappointing score of 149. The Bombers didn't quit however, and came back with games of 204 and 198. The first 5 games of baker totaled 921 (184.2 average) and was the 10th highest for the first five games.

There was no magic on this Saturday for the Bombers during the last 5 baker games. Their struggles continued. The Bowling Bombers fell to a disappointing 868 five game series (173.6 average) and an 11th place finish in the tournament.

However, a magical season it was. The 2007 - 2008 Bowling Bombers will go down in school history as the first team to win a GCL South Division title! In addition, this team added another Sectional Tournament title to the banner in the gym. Individually, Chris Weber became the first Bowling Bomber to claim "Athlete of the Year." So congratulations to the boys in royal blue and black for an outstanding year!
