AIKEN. leading goalscorer at WNC

SUNSHINE Girl Romelda Aiken and national coach Connie Francis have been named Best New Talent and Best Up-And-Coming Coach, respectively, by the New Zealand Herald newspaper following Jamaica's bronze medal finish at the recent World Netball Championships in Auckland.

Aiken was the tournament's most prolific goal-shooter, netting 252 goals in the six games she played, while Francis - in her first year as national coach - guided the team to five wins from six matches, including a 53-52 victory over England to lift the bronze medal in their final game on November 17.

The New Zealand Herald, one of the country's biggest publications, referred to Aiken as a "teenage giant... whose telescopic arms and accuracy right under the hoop will keep Jamaica in good stead for years to come (provided she's not snapped up by a basketball scholarship)."

Francis, in the meantime, received kudos for being the coach who "rattled the Silver Ferns before putting the English roses in their place".

Jamaica faced the then world number one-ranked Silver Ferns in the championships' semi-finals and led by 11 goals at one point before eventually going down, 49-59.
